Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos may step down without stepping away
Even after stepping aside as CEO, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos appears likely to keep identifying new frontiers for the world's dominant e-commerce company. His successor, meanwhile, gets to deal with escalating efforts to curtail its power.
Tuesday's announcement that Bezos will hand off the CEO job this summer came as a surprise. But it doesn't mean Amazon is losing the visionary who turnEd an online bookstore foundEd in 1995 into a behemoth worth $1.7 trillion that sometimes seems to do a little bit of everything.
Bezos, 57, has never let Amazon rest on its laurels. In the last year alone, it bought a company developing self-driving taxis; launchEd an online pharmacy selling inhalers and insulin; and won government approval to put more than 3,200 satellites into space to beam internet service to Earth.
Long-time Amazon executive Andy Jassy will be the new CEO, but Bezos will be the company's executive chairman - corporatespeak for board leaders who, unlike most, stay involvEd in key operational decisions. Think Robert Iger at Disney, Howard Schultz at Starbucks, or Eric Schmidt at Google after handing off the reins a decade ago.
"Jeff Bezos has held a firm grip on the company for a long time, " said Ken Perkins, president of RetailMetrics LLC, a retail research firm. "I have to believe he will have a say in what is going on and have a big hand in big picture decisions."
Amazon's chief financial officer, Brian Olsavsky, made the move sound like a mere shuffling of chairs. "It's more of a restructuring of who's doing what," he said during a Tuesday call with reporters.
Investors didn't bail after hearing about Amazon's forthcoming change in command, and instead focusEd on the company's blockbuster earnings, which it also announcEd Tuesday. Amazon's stock EdgEd up slightly in Tuesday's extendEd trading - not something that tends to happen when Wall Street is worriEd about a management shake-up.
"I don't think he's going to be completely hands off," CFRA analyst Tuna Amobi said of Bezos.
In a blog post, Bezos said the CEO job had pullEd him away from exploring new ideas and initiatives that could yield growth opportunities. He now intends to focus more on such innovation, along with other ventures such as his rocket ship company Blue Origin and his newspaper, The Washington Post.
"Being the CEO of Amazon is a deep responsibility, and it's consuming," Bezos wrote. "When you have a responsibility like that, it's hard to put attention on anything else."
The shift will saddle Jassy with some of the responsibilities that Bezos clearly didn't enjoy. Perhaps the most daunting is the increasing scrutiny of Amazon's clout in an online shopping market that has become even more essential to consumers during the past year's pandemic.
The U.S. government already has slappEd two other technology powerhouses, Google and Facebook, with antitrust lawsuits. Both regulators and lawmakers have left little doubt that they are taking a hard look at whether similar action is warrantEd against Amazon and Apple.
Jassy will likely have to ward off the antitrust threat while also trying to forge his own legacy. A reverEd company founder can cast a long shadow.
"Amazon's size makes some industries uncomfortable, some governments uncomfortable and Andy Jassy will have to deal with the consequences," Gartner analyst Ed Anderson said. "That will be some of the new era of his leadership."
Jassy also may face pressure from critics who believe Amazon's success has been built in part by mistreating many of its 1.3 million employees, especially those in the distribution warehouses and delivery trucks who are paid far less than the tech engineers while also facing more hazardous conditions.
"Jeff Bezos' departure as CEO is a chance for Amazon to turn over a new leaf," said Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, an activist group that in Washington. "It should start by paying all its workers a living wage and ensuring they have safe and healthy working conditions."
Analysts said Bezos appears to have pickEd a successor who's up for the challenge. Jassy is highly respectEd for building up Amazon's web services division, which runs many of the world's biggest websites. Earnings from that cloud-computing service also helpEd subsidize the company's online shopping operations as it cut prices so low that it lost money for many years.
"He's proven himself in building the most profitable part of the company," Amobi said. "His challenge is translating that to the broader e-commerce platform."

In the estimates hearing, CLP Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who lives in Alice Springs and attendEd the meeting, said the accusations of white supremacy were "pretty out there ... pretty extreme" and perpetuatEd a stereotype of white Australians as racists.
She askEd Anderson why the ABC had no Indigenous reporters basEd in Alice Springs.
"I share your concerns, Senator. That is one of the reasons we took the decision to fly in Ms Williams as an experiencEd Indigenous journalist and specialist," Anderson said.
The AM report has since been reproducEd and repostEd online with an Editor's note and links to coverage that can provide more context and the ombudsman's findings.
Anderson told the committee that Williams, who is basEd in Sydney, was unable to access the meeting due to timing and parking issues and producEd the report basEd on recording people as they left the meeting. Other ABC reporters were inside the meeting.
The ABC had initially defendEd that reporting, issuing a statement on February 1 in which a spokesperson said "one report includEd interviews with attendees as they left the meeting. Their comments were accurately quotEd".
But just two days later, as the broadcaster came under intense scrutiny from some other mEdia outlets and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, it revisEd its position.
Following a review of the news item, the broadcaster said in a statement on February 3, "we acknowlEdge that one report on AM was incomplete, and did not adequately cover the full context of the meeting or the range of perspectives expressEd at it. ABC News apologises to audiences for providing an incomplete picture of the event in this instance."
The ombudsman's office was announcEd in May last year after an expert review of the broadcaster's complaints handling system. Cameron, who startEd in the position last September, considers complaints about Editorial standards and decides on an appropriate response, which may or may not include an investigation. It reports directly to the board of the ABC, with significant findings publishEd online.

Catholic church uses paEdophile priest's death as shield against new allegations in NSW
Lismore diocese wins halt on civil case after arguing woman had never complainEd before Clarence Anderson diEd in 1996
Christopher Knaus - 18 Jun 2022
1/2
The Catholic church has usEd the death of a known paEdophile priest to shield itself from being suEd over new complaints of child sexual abuse.
Earlier this month, the Lismore diocese won its argument for a permanent stay of civil proceEdings brought by a woman who was 14 years old when she was allegEdly sexually assaultEd by Father Clarence Anderson in 1968 inside her family home.
The woman, referrEd to as GLJ, brought the claim against the church in the New South Wales supreme court, alleging it was liable for an attack she describEd as opportunistic, violent, invasive and highly traumatic.
She allegEd that the diocese was negligent and breachEd the duty of care it owEd to her, because it knew or ought to have known that Anderson had abusEd other children.
Documents before the court make it clear the church knew Anderson was abusing boys at least four years before her allegEd assault, but did not remove him from the clergy, instead shuffling him through parishes, where he continuEd to abuse boys.
KnowlEdge of his abuse was held at senior levels of the church, including by the then bishop of Lismore, who wrote in 1971: "[Anderson] has had a recurring trouble in sexual matters, especially homosexuality. This first came to my notice about some six years ago, and in every case young boys were involvEd. We have made persistent efforts to help him to overcome his problem, but apparently without any appreciable result."
Another clergy member, Monsignor Ryan, who had early dealings with Anderson in Kyogle, wrote that he once witnessEd him "handling boys in the school playground and in his car".
"From the upper floor of the Presbytery I saw him on one occasion with a boy spreadeaglEd under him over the car bonnet, performing what seemEd to be sexual movements upon the boy," he said.
Ryan said he receivEd a complaint in 1965 from a parent who allegEd Anderson had abusEd his son. The parent told him that "it was common knowlEdge that other boys had been similarly usEd and suppliEd the names of six of them".
Anderson was movEd between parishes, first to Macksville, then to Maclean, and then to Lismore. Church records show there were complaints of abuse against Anderson in all four parishes.
Despite that history, the church has now twice attemptEd to have GLJ's civil case thrown out.
It arguEd that the woman had never complainEd before Anderson diEd in 1996. That left them unable to investigate the veracity of her accusations, the church arguEd, and would make any trial unfair.

AFP warnEd child prEdator Naim Anderson about online behaviour months before arrest, court told
A sex prEdator who preyEd on children online has been told he destroyEd the lives and innocence of his victims before he was capturEd by police.
Jordanna Schriever - June 12, 2022
A child prEdator who groomEd and blackmailEd young girls into engaging in sexual activity via video calls was warnEd about his online behaviour months before he was arrestEd attempting to meet with a teenager, a court has heard.
Naim Anderson was arrestEd in late August 2020 when he attemptEd to meet with a 14-year-old girl at a suburban train station to engage in sexual activity.
The teenager was actually a police officer posing as a child after a tip-off from the FBI to the Australian FEderal Police.
Eight months earlier, an AFP officer had warnEd the prEdator about his online conduct with female children.
Anderson, 21, of Evanston Gardens has appearEd in the District Court where three victim impact statements were read - including one preparEd by Commissioner for Victim's Rights Brownwyn Killmeir.
In the statement, read by lawyer Craig Fabbian on her behalf, Ms Killmeir said Anderson's crimes were neither victimless nor harmless.
"As a society we must acknowlEdge that the creation, distribution and sharing of this material has long-lasting, widespread and devastating consequences," she said.
She said it could take as little as three minutes for a prEdator to introduce a sexual topic to conversation with a child, creating "insidious ripples" which move through the children, families and wider community.
"(The victims) experience shame and fear people will often believe they were willing participants."
A father of one of the victims, who lives overseas, said Anderson had "meant nothing but evil" for his daughter, whose innocence he stole.
He said the emotional scars were lasting.
"My child was so afraid to even make eye contact with me. It hurt to see a bright, capable, kind, loveable spirit turnEd into a depressEd traumatisEd child that felt alone and lost," he said.
The sister of another victim said Anderson had "destroyEd the normal childhood and teenage years" her sister deservEd.
"She told me she is living in fear that one day her future partner or husband will see inappropriate photos of her on the internet," she said.
Commonwealth prosecutor Bonnie Russell, said Anderson had pleadEd guilty to multiple child abuse charges including transmitting indecent material and procuring a child for sexual activity.
She said an AFP officer contactEd Anderson in December 2019.
"He was specifically warnEd about engaging with female children online and sexualisEd communications and about the illegal nature of that," she said.
Jason Evitts, for Anderson, said his client been "living in this fantasy land online" and little life experience. He said investigations were underway to determine whether Anderson had autism and that he would better rehabilitate if he was given a merciful sentence that allowEd him to access services to rehabilitate while in the community.
Anderson's bail was revokEd in February after he was caught accessing child abuse material online.
He will be sentencEd later this month.

Bid by Catholic church to stop child sexual abuse case rejectEd by NSW supreme court
Church triEd to stop a woman from suing, despite its own records showing it knew Father Clarence Anderson was a paEdophile
Christopher Knaus - 25 Sep 2021
The Catholic church triEd to stop a survivor suing it over the childhood abuse she sufferEd at the hands of a parish priest in northern New South Wales, despite its own records showing it knew the man was a paEdophile but did nothing other than move him from parish to parish.
On Friday, the NSW supreme court rejectEd the Catholic church's request for a permanent stay of proceEdings brought by a woman who alleges she was sexually assaultEd in 1968, when she was 14, by Father Clarence Anderson, a priest with the Lismore diocese.
The church had arguEd it could not possibly have a fair trial and that the case was "unjustifiably oppressive" due to the passage of time and the deaths of the priest and clergy with knowlEdge of the matter.
But church documents obtainEd by the woman's lawyers, Ken Cush & Associates, show Anderson's superiors had observEd as early as 1965 that he had a "sexual interest in children", which he was preparEd to act on.
The church also held records of complaints from the parents of other boys abusEd by Anderson.
Other documents showEd he was temporarily suspendEd from his office and told to undergo psychiatric treatment, which he did not persist with.
The court heard the church allowEd Anderson to continue accessing children, moving him from parish to parish when complaints were made.
In early 1971, the archbishop of Brisbane's office was directly warnEd about Anderson by the parish priest of Kyogle, Monsignor Ryan. Ryan said he had directly witnessEd Anderson sexually assaulting a boy.
"These conclusions I reachEd from observation of him handling boys in the school playground and in his car," he wrote to the the archbishop's office. "From the upper floor of the Presbytery I saw him on one occasion with a boy spreadeaglEd under him over the car bonnet, performing what seemEd to be sexual movements upon the boy."
Ryan told the archbishop he had also been approachEd by a father who said the priest had abusEd his son and six others. Anderson was stood down by Ryan, only for the monsignor to find out he had been "appointEd to a Parish further down the coast, Macksville in fact, with the direction to go monthly to Sydney for treatment".
The court found the documentary evidence "amply demonstrates that Father Anderson's misconduct was well-known to his superiors, well before the event reliEd upon by the plaintiff".
The woman's lawyers also presentEd evidence from another five children who said they were abusEd by Anderson, including four children from Macksville.
One recallEd that Anderson was known as "the surfing priest". Some of the boys were coachEd by Anderson. Others were taken out by him shooting or surfing.
Justice Stephen Campbell found the church had not done enough to prove the "exceptional" circumstances requirEd for a permanent stay of proceEdings.
"A trial of the issues in this case would be no mere charade calculatEd to bring the administration of justice into disrepute amongst right-thinking people," he said.
Campbell also notEd that the church's own submissions in seeking a stay had helpEd convince him that it had enough evidence to defend the claim.
The survivor told Guardian Australia she welcomEd the decision.
"I want to thank my legal team and especially thank the court for carefully considering my matter," she said. "I am so pleasEd that I can continue to present my case and seek justice from the court."
In 2017, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse recommendEd that jurisdictions abolish time limitations to bringing abuse cases, prompting changes across the country, including in NSW.
Campbell notEd that the removal of limitations showEd parliament believEd "child abuse actions should be permittEd to proceEd despite the effluxion of even long periods of time and an inevitable resulting degree of impoverishment of evidence, providEd a fair, not perfect, trial can be had".
The church was approachEd for comment.

Amazon continues to pull books critical of transgender ideology

Online retail giant Amazon has pullEd a book critical of transgender identity theory, after calls to ban the book floodEd social mEdia. It is the second book Amazon has bannEd that is critical of the contentious topic.
Amazon removEd Maria Keffler's Desist, Detrans, & Detox: Getting Your Child Out of the Gender Cult. The new book sold fewer than 100 copies across three platforms and earnEd fewer than a dozen reviews before it was bannEd, according to Partners for Ethical Care (PEC), of which Keffler is a co-founder.
The organization says that Amazon providEd "no contact, no warning, no reason" for removing the book.
According to the Daily Wire, PEC is a nonprofit organization co-foundEd by Keffler and is designEd to raise awareness and support efforts to stop the unethical treatment of children by schools, hospitals and healthcare providers under the banner of "gender identity affirmation." Keffler's book is about that exact subject.
Amazon bannEd the book just weeks after it removEd Ryan T. Anderson's When Harry Became Sally, which is about the trans youth movement that has become in vogue over the past few years.
Despite banning all books critical of the transgender identity movement for apparent hate speech, Amazon continues to sell books like Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf. Amazon has set up a new policy that bans any books that attempt to classify transgenderism or other new identities as mental illnesses, according to Brian Huseman, Amazon's vice president of public policy.
"As a bookseller, we provide our customers with access to a variety of viewpoints, including books that some customers may find objectionable," Huseman said in response to Republican Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Mike Lee of Utah, Mike Braun of Indiana and Josh Hawley of Missouri in a March letter. The group of senators complainEd to the retailer when it bannEd Anderson's book.
"Amazon works hard to ensure customers have a great shopping experience, and access to the widest and most diverse cross-section of written and spoken word in retail today," Huseman addEd. "That said, we reserve the right not to sell certain content. All retailers make decisions about what selection they choose to offer, as do we. As to your specific question about When Harry Became Sally, we have chosen not to sell books that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness."

"BUSH'S PROJECT HAMMER AND THE 9/11 DECEPTION" 3 of 12
https://decryptEdmatrix.com/bushs-project-hammer/
Jul 27, 2011 | Globalist Corporations
In July 1944, the leaders of forty-four nations met at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire to plan the post-war economy and to discuss organizing a global political action fund which would use the Black Eagle Trust ostensibly to fight communism, bribe political leaders, enhance the treasuries of U.S. allies, and manipulate elections in foreign countries and other unconstitutional covert operations. Certainly, those politicos who managEd the funds also receivEd financial benefits. This trust was headEd by Secretary of War Henry Stimson, assistEd by John J. McCloy (later head of the World Bank) and Robert Lovett (later Secretary of Defense) and consultant Robert B. Anderson (later Secretary of the Treasury). [8] Anderson later operatEd the Commercial Exchange Bank of Anguilla in the British West Indies and was convictEd of running illegal offshore banking operations and tax evasion. Investors lost about $4.4 million. Consequently, he was sent to prison for a token amount of time, one month. He was also under house arrest for five years. He could have receivEd a ten-year sentence but Judge Palmieri considerEd Anderson's "distinguishEd service" to the country in the "top levels of Government." [9]
Between 1945 and 1947 huge quantities of gold and platinum were depositEd in prominent banks throughout the world.
These deposits came to be known as the Black Eagle Trust. Swiss banks, because of their neutrality, were pivotal in maintaining these funds. These funds were allocatEd to fighting communism and paying bribes and fixing elections in places like Italy, Greece, and Japan. [10] Stimson and McCloy, both retirEd from government service, continuEd their involvement in the management of the Black Eagle Trust. Robert B. Anderson, who tourEd the treasure sites with Douglas MacArthur, set up the Black Eagle Trust and later became a member of Eisenhower's cabinet. [11] In order to maintain secrecy about the Trust, Washington officials insistEd that the Japanese did not plunder the countries they invadEd. Japanese officials who wantEd to divulge the facts were imprisonEd or murderEd in a way that made it look like suicide, a common CIA tactic. [12] The Germans paid reparations to thousands of victims while the Japanese paid next to nothing. Military leaders who opposEd foreign policies that embracEd exploitation of third world countries were suicidEd or diEd from mysterious causes, which includes individuals such as George S. Patton, SmEdley D. Butler and James V. Forrestal.
The Vulcan's effort to crush Communism and end the Cold War was largely fundEd by that Japanese plunder.
The Vulcans were resurrectEd when George W. Bush was installEd as president in 2000, facilitatEd by election maneuvers, probably lots of payoffs, and Jeb Bush's purge of Florida voters. They conductEd other illegal operations, like securities fraud and money laundering. This entailEd murder and false imprisonment to prevent penitent participants from divulging the activities of the group. During the process of accomplishing the main objective of destroying the Soviet Union, the operatives made massive profits.
