When 18 Republicans Help Kill Defunding Pentagon-Sponsored Pride Events, Who Needs Democrats?
By Becky Noble | 3:25 PM on September 29, 2023
It has been pointed out many times, that the great Rush Limbaugh used to say that, "The purpose of any military is to kill people and break things." But try telling that to Democrats. From Bill Clinton's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," to the rainbow-drenched fighting force of today, Democrats view the military, not as the last line of defense for America and her citizens, but as some sort of social experiment with captive subjects.
When Republicans took control of the House of Representatives, and the nation's purse strings, many people thought the days of a woke military under the Biden administration might come to an end. But thanks to a handful of Republicans, Pride Month celebrations will continue in the U.S. military.
Here's the list of House Republicans who voted against the amendment:
Ken Buck of Colorado
Ken Calvert of California
Lori Chavez-DeRemer of Oregon
John Curtis of Utah
Anthony D'Esposito of New York
John Duarte of California
Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania
Andrew Garbarino of New York
Tony Gonzales of Texas
David Joyce of Ohio
Thomas Kean, Jr. of New Jersey
Kevin Kiley of California
Nick LaLota of New York
Michael Lawler of New York
Nancy Mace of South Carolina
Marcus Molinaro of New York
Jay Obernolte of California
Michelle Steel of California
On Wednesday, 18 House Republicans sided with Democrats and voted to kill an amendment to the 2024 Department of Defense budget 231-202, that would have ended taxpayers footing the bill for any Pentagon-sponsored Pride Month celebrations. The amendment was introduced by Texas Congressman Chip Roy (R), and even with a slim GOP majority in the House, the amendment failed with 18 Republicans siding with Democrats. Four House members declined to vote.

After split with GOP, here's who Les Wexner still backs financially?
By Tristan Navera - Staff reporter, Columbus Business First
Jan 23, 2020, 7:51am EST
Even after ending his political affiliation with the Republican Party, L Brands CEO Les Wexner continues to donate to politicians across the country - and across party lines.
In September 2018, the longtime Republican donor made national headlines by announcing he had quit the party.Since then, Wexner has cut the level of his political contributions, according to data from the Federal Elections Commission.
But that doesn't mean he's stopped the flow of cash entirely.
An analysis of Wexner's $922,300 in state and federal giving over the past three years shows a sharp decline in overall contributions in the past year, along with a broadening of recipients to include more Democrats. A Wexner spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on his donation history.
This dataset excludes contributions by Abigail Wexner, who primarily contributes to Democrats, but in smaller amounts.
Federal contributions
On the federal level, Les Wexner donated $16,200 over the course of 2019, according to FEC data, compared to $95,900 in 2018 and $557,700 in 2017.
Last year, $5,000 went to the Support to Ensure Victory Everywhere PAC - commonly called the STEVE PAC - a benefactor mostly to Republicans and whose recipients last year included Ohioans Troy Balderson, Steve Chabot, Mike Turner, Warren Davidson, Jim Renacci, Brad Wenstrup, Bill Johnston, David Joyce, Bob Gibbs and Anthony Gonzalez, according to an analysis from the Center For Responsive Politics. The group does support a small number of Democrats.
In September, Wexner contributed $2,800 to Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican.
The retail magnate also made donations to two Democratic lawmakers, including $2,800 to Columbus Democrat Rep. Joyce Beatty. In April, he gave $5,600 to the U.S. Senate campaign of Colorado State Sen. Mike Johnston, who went on to end his bid for U.S. Senate in September.
In 2018, Wexner's contributions included $33,900 to the National Republican Congressional Committee, $33,900 to then House Speaker Paul Ryan and gifts to Portman, Balderson and Gonzalez, as well as the STEVE PAC.
He did donate $2,700 to Beatty in 2018, after his September decision to leave the Republican party. That was his first donation to a Democrat in five years.
Wexner also donated to the L Brands PAC and the New Albany PAC in 2018, both of which support Ohio House members from both parties.
In 2017, Wexner's donations included $237,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee and $300,000 to With Honor, a "cross-partisan" group that backs veteran candidates.
Wexner's 2016 political giving topped $440,000, including $250,000 to the presidential campaign of former Gov. John Kasich and big donations to Ryan, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Red flag laws allow law enforcement to take guns away from individuals who have had complaints filed against them that they are a danger with little due process.
But the Safer Communities Act would "force states with red flag laws to adopt strict and comprehensive due process before they qualify for funding," Cornyn said.
The bill also includes a provision to close a so-called "boyfriend loophole," which is unrelated to causes of the Uvalde shooting. It includes prohibiting those with a domestic violence record from purchasing a firearm
"Unless you are convicted of domestic violence, this will have NO IMPACT on your gun rights," Cornyn said.
Fourteen House Republicans voted for the bill: Steve Chabot (Ohio), Liz Cheney (Wyo.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Penn.), Tony Gonzales (Texas), Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio), Christopher Jacobs (N.Y.), David Joyce (Ohio), John Katko (N.Y.), Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), Peter Meijer (Mich.), Tom Rice (S.C.), Maria Elvira Salazar (Fla.), Michael Turner (Ohio), and Fred Upton (Mich.).
Three Republicans didn't vote; 193 voted against it.
Fifteen Senate Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, voted for it: Roy Blunt (Mo.), Richard Burr (N.C.), Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), Bill Cassidy (La.), Susan Collins (Maine), John Cornyn (Texas), Joni Ernst (Iowa), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Rob Portman (Ohio), Mitt Romney (Utah), Thom Tillis (N.C.), Pat Toomey (Pa.), and Todd Young (Ind.).
Two Republicans didn't vote; 33 voted against it. Blunt, Burr, Toomey and Portman aren't running for reelection.
The vote came after the Supreme Court issued the most significant Second Amendment ruling in over a decade, handing a win to the National Rifle Association, which challenged a New York law in NYSRPA v. Bruen. The court held that the Second Amendment protects the right of law-abiding citizens to carry a firearm outside their home.
What the Supreme Court got right, the NRA argues, Congress got wrong.
While it supports "school safety with dedicated resources at the federal level, an investment in better access to, and quality of, mental health care," the NRA said it won't support "senseless gun control measures that some in Congress have already said is just a first step that 'paves the way' for additional gun control that will only infringe on the rights of the law-abiding."
The bills "were hastily jammed through with ambiguous language and overbroad definitions to appease gun control supporters in Congress," the NRA added.

The 35 House Republicans who defied Trump and voted for the January 6 commission
Thirty-five House Republicans voted for an investigation into the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Republicans critical of President Trump's role in the events broke ranks to vote for the probe.
The vote underscores the division within the GOP over Trump's influence on the party's direction.
Thirty-five House Republicans on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill to establish a commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Former President Donald Trump this week urged Republican lawmakers to oppose it, saying in a statement: "Republicans must get much tougher and much smarter, and stop being used by the Radical Left."
The result underscores the ongoing division within the GOP over Trump's role in and influence over the party's direction, with many Republicans who had criticized the former president for his role in the events of January 6 - including Rep. Liz Cheney - breaking ranks to vote in favor of establishing a commission.
The bill passed by a vote of 252-175 and was opposed by GOP leadership, Insider's Grace Panetta and Charles Davis reported.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy spoke out against the bill, saying the commission "does not examine interrelated forms of political violence in America," and House Republican leadership on Tuesday also tried to pressure GOP lawmakers to vote against it, Punchbowl News reported.

35 House Republicans Vote for Bill to Establish January 6 Commission
Thirty-five House Republicans voted Wednesday to establish a commission to investigate the riots and protests on January 6.
The House passed H.R. 3233, the National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol Complex Act, with 252 votes in favor and 175 votes against the bill.
While the bill featured strong Democrat support, the legislation also had surprisingly strong support from House Republicans.
Thirty-five House Republicans voted for the legislation, even though House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) came out against the bill. He criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for not negotiating in good faith.
The 35 House Republicans who voted for the bill reportedly include:
Tom Rice (R-SC)
Dan Newhouse (R-WA)
Cliff Bentz (R-OR)
Tom Reed (R-NY)
Peter Meijer (R-MI)
Adam Kinzinger (R-IL)
John Katko (R-NY)
Dusty Johnson (R-SD)
Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA)
Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH)
Jamie Herrera Beutler (R-WA)
Chris Jacobs (R-NY)
Steve Womack (R-AR)
Stephanie Bice (R-OK)
Andrew Garbarino (R-NY)
Liz Cheney (R-WY)

Trey Hollingsworth (R-IN)
Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE)
Carlos Giminez (R-FL)
The ten House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump also voted for the commission to investigate the riots on January 6.
The 35 House Republicans run counter to some House Republicans, such as Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who contended on the House floor before the vote that many committees already have the ability to investigate the incidents on January 6.
Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) said in a statement after the vote that Pelosi hopes the commission distracts from the Democrats' many crises.
He said, "This partisan legislation was designed to distract the American people from the unprecedented crisis at our border, Joe Biden's wasteful tax-and-spend policies, and the fact Democrats would rather defend radical Islamic terrorists in Palestine than support our allies in Israel."

Pennsylvania, 13th Congressional District: Todd Rowley, a retired FBI counterintelligence officer, is the Democrat opposing first-term Republican John Joyce. Rowley is a former policeman, state trooper and paramedic who spent 24 years as an FBI agent engaged primarily in paramilitary and counterintelligence operations, including liaison with the CIA and the Director of National Intelligence.
Maryland, 1st Congressional District: Mia Mason is a retired 20-year military veteran, who "completed a total of 5 combat tours between Iraq and Afghanistan while serving in the Navy and Army," according to her campaign website. She was discharged from the military for being gay and then brought back in. She was "onboard USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom." She is opposing five-term Republican incumbent Andy Harris in a district that comprises the rural eastern shore of Maryland.
Pennsylvania, 14th Congressional District: William Marx retired from the Marines after a 16-year career and is now a high school teacher and local councilman. He is running against first-term incumbent Republican Guy Reschenthaler in this southwest Pennsylvania seat.
Midwest
Ohio, 14th Congressional District: Hillary O'Connor Mueri was a Navy pilot, who flew combat missions during the Iraq war to provide close air support to ground forces. She went to law school after the military, specializing in product litigation in the aviation industry. Mueri is running against four-term incumbent David Joyce in a mixed suburban and rural district extending northeast from Cleveland along Lake Erie.
Wisconsin, 1st Congressional District: Roger Polack was recruited by the US intelligence services while a student at the University of Wisconsin and trained to specialize in Asian affairs. His web site declares: "Roger served multiple tours as a civilian intelligence officer in Afghanistan, spending 20 months on the ground first as an analyst for, and then Deputy Director of, the Afghanistan Threat Finance Cell. He sat face to face with Taliban detainees, helped plan law enforcement and military operations, and managed the intelligence priorities of 40 civilian and military staff."
In other words, the Democratic candidate in the district formerly held by Republican Paul Ryan, now by first-term Republican Bryan Steil, should be investigated for possible connections to torture and assassination. But in the eyes of the Democratic Party leadership, this record is a credential, not the mark of Cain.
Indiana, 3rd Congressional District: Chip Coldiron is an Army veteran deployed twice to Afghanistan, who became a health care worker and then schoolteacher after leaving the military. He is running against four-term incumbent Jim Banks in a district centered on Ft. Wayne.
South
Kentucky, 6th District: Josh Hicks is a Marine veteran turned policeman. In his four years on active duty, he was deployed twice with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, rising to the rank of sergeant. He went to work as a policeman in eastern Kentucky, becoming a member of the SWAT team. He is running against four-term incumbent Andy Barr in a district centered on the city of Lexington.
North Carolina, 11th Congressional District: Morris Davis is the former chief prosecutor at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, although he was forced out by the Bush administration because he objected to the use of testimony obtained through torture of detainees. The Guantanamo posting was the culmination of a 25-year military career as a Judge Advocate General in the Air Force. Davis is running for the Asheville-based seat formerly held by Mark Meadows, now White House Chief of Staff for Trump. He was initially a heavy underdog to 25-year-old Madison Cawthorn, a right-wing activist who won an upset victory in the Republican primary, but Cawthorn is now caught up in a scandal over social media postings of his trip to see Hitler's vacation hideaway in the Bavarian Alps, which he tweeted was "on his bucket list" of must-see locations.
Georgia, 1st Congressional District: Joyce Marie Griggs retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel after a 33-year career in Army intelligence. She won the Democratic primary to face incumbent three-term Republican Buddy Carter in a district centered the city of Savannah. According to her website: "Among her many decorations, medals, and badges are the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service, and Global War on Terrorism Service medals, and the Parachutist badge." Griggs had three tours in Iraq in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

The List: 15 Republicans Lobbied to Reopen Loophole for Foreign Students
You know what to do anons, check they're donors, the lobbying groups, see of the Koch brothers or Soros are putting pressure on them through lobbying groups. Time to dispense with Republican in name only
A group of 15 House Republicans lobbied President Trump's administration to reopen a loophole that gives visas to online-only foreign students just as the White House reversed policy to do just that.
This month, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency announced it would enforce federal law that dictates that foreign students are not awarded F-1 student visas for the purpose of attending online courses.
On Tuesday, Trump's administration dropped the requirement for F-1 foreign student visa holders to attend in-person classes, reopening the loophole allowing them to stay in the U.S. The move came after major pressure from Fortune 500 companies, the Chamber of Commerce, and a lawsuit by Harvard University and MIT.
While the Trump administration dropped the visa requirement, 15 House Republicans signed a letter lobbying ICE to allow foreign students to attend online classes to stay in the U.S. on F-1 visas.

Roll Call: The 34 House Republicans Who Voted for Farm Worker Amnesty
Thirty-four Republicans voted December 11 to give amnesty at least one million illegal immigrants and to subsidize farm companies with a wave of cheap visa-workers who will lower wages throughout the farm workforce, which includes at least one million American workers.
The Republicans are mostly from rural districts where the local media is skewed in favor of local farm employers and often ignores the economic interest of local American farmworkers.
Some of the pro-amnesty GOP legislators will avoid the pushback from GOP activists and voters by retiring before November.
The recorded vote revealed the amnesty-and-outsourcing Republicans:
Rep. Mark Amodei, Nevada,
Rep. James Baird, Indiana,

Q Research General #2098: SUICIDE! Its Whats For The WEEKEND Edition
Trump says he can 'probably' support bill letting states set marijuana policy
President Trump said Friday that he "probably" will support new legislation allowing states to set their own marijuana policies, making good on assurances he gave Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., this year.
The bill sponsored by Gardner would federally legalize marijuana in states that allows its use, ending a long-standing conflict between state and federal law, which still deems all possession of the drug illegal.
"I support Senator Gardner. I know exactly what he's doing," Trump said. "We're looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes."
In April, Trump told Gardner in a pair of private phone conversations that he would back such legislation, but Trump did not publicly discuss his position.
More than two dozen states allow medical marijuana sales. Nine states and the nation's capital have recreational legalization laws, though neither Vermont or D.C. regulate sales.
During the 2016 campaign, Trump said he favored a states-rights approach to recreational pot and that he supported medical marijuana. But his nomination of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a longtime reform opponent, generated concern among the state-legal industry.
Gardner won Trump's initial backing on pot reform legislation by blocking Justice Department nominations after Sessions withdrew the 2013 Cole Memo in January. That memo acted as a green light for states' autonomy by identifying specific trip wires for a federal crackdown, and Sessions' move was seen as a threat by states like Colorado. Sessions instead empowered individual U.S. attorneys to decide whether to prosecute marijuana crimes.
Gardner introduced the new legislation with co-sponsor Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. Companion legislation in the House was introduced by Reps. David Joyce, R-Ohio, and Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.
The Strengthening the Tenth Amendment Through Entrusting States Act, or the STATES Act, would change federal law to say that the federal Controlled Substances Act doesn't apply to state regulated markets. It sets a 21-year age requirement for recreational sales, and removes industrial hemp, or low-THC cannabis, from the CSA, making it legal to grow nationwide. It would also ease banking hurdles to state legal pot businesses.

Senators propose bill letting states regulate marijuana after talks with Trump
Lawmakers introduced legislation Thursday aimed at resolving the long-running tension between states that legalized medical and recreational marijuana sales and the federal government, which still deems all use a federal crime.
The bill, offered by Sens. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., comes after President Trump's April assurance to Gardner that he would support reform.
Gardner told reporters at a morning press conference that "I have spoken to the president today and certainly that was part of the conversation."
"I have spoken to the president about this approach. I have talked to him about this bill," Gardner said
"In the previous conversations we had he talked about the need to resolve the conflict between state and federal law," he said. "We talked about his support for a states rights approach during the campaign, and he's talked about that in the days since with me. Not putting word in the mouth of the White House, but I think this will be an opportunity to fulfill that federalism approach."
"Sen. Gardner has done great work to plow the ground," Warren said at the press conference. "This is not a bill that forces legalization on any state that doesn't want it. We are trying to respect the voters of our states. … This is an example of Congress doing its job."
Although pot possession for any reason outside limited research remains a federal crime, more than two dozen states have authorized medical marijuana markets since 1996. Eight have laws regulating recreational sales.
Gardner won Trump's initial backing by blocking Justice Department nominations after Attorney General Jeff Sessions withdrew the 2013 Cole Memo in January. That memo acted as a green light for states' autonomy by identifying specific trip wires for a federal crackdown, and Sessions' move was seen as a threat by states like Colorado.
Sessions, a longtime marijuana legalization opponent, empowered individual U.S. attorneys to decide whether to prosecute marijuana crimes, putting the fate of a multibillion-dollar state-legal industry in question.
In at least two phone conversations in April, Trump assured Gardner that there would be no crackdown on Colorado's regulated recreational pot market, and that he would support legislation making marijuana federalism permanent. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed Gardner's account.
Although the threat of a federal crackdown loomed with Sessions leading the Justice Department, polls show overwhelming public support for marijuana legalization. A Pew Research Center poll in January found 61 percent support legalization, although a Gallup poll found 64 percent support late last year.
Trump's April pledge to back legislation came the same week as former House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced he had "evolved" his position and joined a marijuana business' board of advisers.
Warren is a prominent progressive Democrat from Massachusetts, where voters opted to legalize recreational use in 2016. In addition, Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington state and the District of Columbia have recreational legalization laws, though sales are unregulated in D.C. and Vermont.
Although there's solid polling support for reform, legislation may have a hard time passing, particularly in the House of Representatives, where Republicans opposed to marijuana control key posts, including House Rules Committee Chairman Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas. He was recently described by a prominent marijuana advocate as a legislative "sphincter" preventing measure from reaching the floor for a vote.
If the bill can reach the floor, the Gardner-Warren legislation likely would have a good shot at passing, particularly in the House, where medical marijuana-protecting legislation previously passed overwhelmingly and where in 2015 an amendment from Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif. That amendment protected state recreational marijuana markets, and it failed in a narrow 206-222 vote in which 45 Republicans voted in favor and 24 Democrats opposed it.
Companion legislation was introduced in the House by Reps. David Joyce, R-Ohio, and Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.
