Why Google Hired Former Rep. Susan Molinari
Google is attempting to boost its political firepower, hiring former Rep. Susan Molinari (R-NY) to head its DC office, Politico first reported on Thursday.

Molinari will begin her new job as Google VP of public policy and government relations in March, according to Politico. Molinari's role will extend beyond the Beltway, though - she's reportedly in charge of all political outreach for "the Americas," or the entire Western Hemisphere.

"I am excited about Susan joining Google," David Drummond, Google Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer said in a statement to CNN. "She's a true trailblazer and her enthusiasm for our technology and its potential to change lives will be a real asset to our team in the Americas.

Eric Schmidt, who led Google's transformation into a tech giant, has left the company

Eric Schmidt, who drove Google's transformation from Silicon Valley start-up to global titan, is no longer an adviser to the search giant and its parent Alphabet, marking another milestone in recent personnel shake-ups that've seen the company's old guard bow out.

Schmidt, tapped as Google's CEO in 2001, left his role as a technical advisor in February, according to a person familiar with the situation. His exit ends a 19-year tenure at Google, where he was brought in to be the "adult supervision" to the company's young founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Schmidt's departure comes three years after Schmidt said he was stepping down as executive chairman and would no longer serve in an operational role.

Representatives for Schmidt and Google declined to comment.

Schmidt's exit marks another stage in Google's evolution, and comes as Schmidt's participation in government projects has raised questions about conflicts of interest. Late last year, Page and Brin, who started Google as Stanford University grad students in 1998, handed leadership of Alphabet and its sprawling operations to Sundar Pichai, who had been running the core search business since 2015. David Drummond, the company's 14-year legal chief, retired in January after scrutiny over past relationships.

As the original management departs, employees and industry observers have questioned whether the world's largest search engine, with more than 120,000 employees around the globe, can maintain its famously freewheeling culture. In the past three years, tensions between management and employees have mounted over the handling of sexual misconduct allegations directed at top executives, a censored search engine project in China and initiatives around artificial intelligence for the US Department of Defense.
Schmidt's exit means he is officially, if symbolically, off Alphabet's payroll. He was earning $1 per year in the adviser role.

Alphabet Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond, who left the company on Jan. 31 following a sexual-misconduct investigation, each made more than $47 million last year. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who last year stepped away from day-to-day operation of the company, each made $1 in 2019. Alphabet's Legal Chief Retires Under Cloud of Abuse Allegations

Alphabet, the parent company of tech giant Google, has lost its Chief Legal Officer David Drummond, who is reportedly retiring from the company according to a recent filing. Drummond allegedly fathered a child with a subordinate and subsequently emotionally abused her, according to a blog post by the woman published in 2019.

CNBC reports that the chief legal officer of Google's parent company Alphabet is allegedly retiring from his position at the firm according to a filing. Drummond is one of Google's highest-paid executives, his departure comes amidst another round of sexual misconduct scandals at Google. A number of executives have been accused of sexual misconduct at the firm in recent years, resulting in a global employee walkout in 2018.

The employee walkout resulted in the amendment of some of Google's policies relating to sexual misconduct, but Drummond and other executives still faced allegations of misconduct at the company. Drummond is reportedly departing the company on January 31, 2020, according to CNBC. A note from Drummond reads:

With Larry and Sergey now leaving their executive roles at Alphabet, the company is entering an exciting new phase, and I believe that it's also the right time for me to make way for the next generation of leaders. As a result, after careful consideration, I have decided to retire at the end of this month.

A former senior contracts manager at Google, Jennifer Blakely, published a blog post about her relationship with Drummond last year in which she alleged that Drummond broke company rules by having multiple affairs with other employees. She also alleged that he neglected her and their son often disappearing for long periods of time. Days after the blog post, Drummond married another Google employee, 37-year-old Corinne Dixon.

While Alphabet states that it will not be paying Drummond an exit package, the legal officer was paid $47 million by the company last year and has sold shares worth more than $220 million in the last year as well.

Drummond acknowledged the extramarital affair with Blakely but, in a statement at the time, he said he 'never started' a relationship with anyone else at Alphabet.
The company said Drummond is not getting an exit package as part of his departure.
His compensation package for 2018 was worth $47 million, making him one of the company's highest-paid employees, according to regulatory filings.
In a memo sent to employees, Drummond said that with founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin 'now leaving their executive roles at Alphabet, the company is entering an exciting new phase, and I believe that it's also the right time for me to make way for the next generation of leaders.'
He did not mention the misconduct allegations.
Drummond said Page and Brin asked for his help more than 20 years ago when what became Google and Alphabet was just an unincorporated startup.
He joined Google full time in 2002 and was named chief legal officer in 2006.
Drummond's departure comes as Alphabet, like other big tech companies, faces regulatory pressures around the world.
Last March, Europe's antitrust regulators ordered it to pay 1.49 billion euros ($1.7 billion) for freezing out rivals in the online advertising business. It also faces antitrust probes in the US as lawmakers question its power and dominance.

A former Google employee posted a scathing account Wednesday of her relationship with the search giant's chief legal officer, saying her treatment represented "institutionalized behavior" that starts at the "very top" of the company.

Jennifer Blakely, a former contracts manager for Google's legal team, said she and David Drummond began dating in 2004, and had a son together. Because of the relationship, Google moved Blakely out of the legal team to the sales department, causing her career to suffer.

After the relationship ended, she says, Drummond neglected their child and made "terrifying threats" to gain custody. She said he initially refused to discuss child support, and she called Drummond's treatment "nothing short of abuse."

Alphabet Execs Investigated For Sexual Harassment, Inappropriate Relationships With Employees
The fallout from the very public firing of former McDonald's president and CEO Jim Easterbrook over an affair with a company employee is now seeing a sexual misconduct investigation of executives at Alphabet, Inc., a company that's no stranger to these sordid episodes. Alphabet is the parent firm of Google Inc., which has also had to cope with executive sexual misconduct in the past. Alphabet's board of directors has launched an investigation into how its executives handled claims of sexual harassment and other misconduct. It's assembled an independent subcommittee to look into these explosive issues, and has also engaged a law firm to assist with the sweeping investigation, according to CNBC.
In the board's sights is David Drummond, senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer for Alphabet, who fathered a child with Jennifer Blakely, one of his employees. Drummond admitted to his affair with Blakely, which began in 2007 when he was married to another woman. Both were Google employees at the time. Drummond subsequently married Corinne Dixon, a Google employee, over the recent Labor Day weekend. Blakely claims Drummond abandoned their son after their extramarital affair. She also alleges Drummond had affairs with other Alphabet and Google employees. Drummond denies this, despite having married Dixon. "Other than Jennifer, I never started a relationship with anyone else who was working at Google or Alphabet," claims Drummond. "Any suggestion otherwise is simply untrue." Blakely said Drummond refused to discuss child support. She described his behavior towards her and their son as "nothing short of abuse."

Alphabet has remained silent on the Drummond scandal and hasn't punished Drummond in any way. Drummond's pay from Alphabet, however, skyrocketed to $47 million in 2018 from $664,252 in 2017 and $664,387 in 2016. The resurrected Drummond scandal isn't the only high-profile outrage engulfing Alphabet and Google over the past few years. Alphabet shareholders sued the board last January for covering-up sexual misconduct from executives, including Android Inc. co-founder Andy Rubin.
Google CEO Larry Page demanded Rubin resign after a sexual harassment claim by an employee against Rubin was found to be credible. The employee, with whom Rubin had an extramarital affair, accused him of forcing her into giving him oral sex in a hotel room in 2013.

David Carl Drummond is an American businessman and conglomerate executive. He currently serves as Senior Vice President (SVP) of corporate development and Chief Legal Officer (CLO) for Alphabet Inc., and formerly its subsidiary,
Google, as well as part of the board of directors of mental health non-profit Crisis Text Line.

His first time working with Google was in 1998 as a partner at leading technology law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati's corporate transactions group; he was Google's first outside counsel.
He joined Google in 2002. Drummond earned a bachelor's degree in history from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California and a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School.
Drummond has a son born in 2007. Drummond was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2005 with causing Google to violate securities law because he failed to advise the company's board that the company was required to register

Despite Sexual Misconduct Report, Alphabet's Chief Legal Officer Earned $47M in 2018
Alphabet chief legal officer David Drummond was one executive accused of facing no consequences for sexual misconduct at Google in a New York Times report that sparked global walkouts from employees last year. His salary didn't change in the wake of the allegations, and he saw a massive 2018 stock award.
Google parent company Alphabet Inc.'s chief legal officer made more than $47 million in 2018, according to a proxy statement filed Tuesday, despite internal criticism last year that he and other male executives at the company did not face consequences for sexual misconduct at work.
The Mountain View, California-based company said it did not have further comment on whether the allegations against Alphabet CLO David Drummond raised in a New York Times report last year impacted his 2018 compensation package.
In the October article, former Google legal department member Jennifer Blakely detailed her multiyear affair with Drummond in the mid-2000s, when he was still general counsel of Google and married.
She claimed Drummond only informed human resources after she became pregnant, at which point she was told Google didn't approve of manager-subordinate relationships, and it was made "clear it would not be David" who had to leave the legal team.
Blakely switched to sales and, a year later, left the company. The stories shared by her and other women spurred a series of walkouts from thousands of Google employees at offices around the world demanding the company change its alleged culture of protecting men in power accused of sexual misconduct.
On Wednesday, Google workers staged another protest over claims the company retaliated against employees who walked out last year.
Drummond did not see any change in salary in the wake of the allegations and walkouts. His salary has held steady at $650,000 for the past three years. He, like the other executives named in Alphabet's proxy statement, has not received a bonus or nonequity incentives in at least three years.
In 2018, Drummond's "other compensation" totaled $19,585.
The vast majority of Drummond's earnings last year came in the form of stock awards, not uncommon for tech industry executives. But his stock awards are high for a CLO in any industry, coming in at $46,612,647.
That could be an attempt to make up for lost time. According to Alphabet's 2018 proxy statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Drummond didn't receive stock awards in 2017 or 2016. Alphabet's chief financial officer Ruth Porat received stock awards in 2016 and 2018.
Chief executive officer Sundar Pichai was awarded nearly $200 million in stock in 2016 but hasn't received awards since.
Unlike Pichai and Porat, Drummond's executive title includes only Alphabet, not subsidiary Google. Kent Walker currently serves as Google's chief legal officer and senior vice president of global affairs, promoted from Google general counsel in August.
Walker's compensation was not disclosed in Alphabet's proxy.

But he had stepped down from that role on Jan. 20, 2011 to become Google's executive chairman, giving him broader latitude to engage in political and diplomatic activities.vi

Schmidt's timing was propitious. That same day, the White House also announced that Deputy Chief-of-Staff Jim Messina and White House Political Director Patrick Gaspard were quitting to run Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. Days later, Schmidt met privately with Messina to strategize about the 2012 re-election effort.vii

Messina reportedly considers Schmidt a "mentor" after the two met during the previous presidential campaign.

As Schmidt grew closer to Obama's re-election team, the FTC in June 2011 announced it was launching a formal antitrust probe to investigate whether Google was abusing its dominance in Web-search advertising.vii
Questions Raised

Did Eric Schmidt or Google officials discuss the FTC's antitrust investigation with the White House?

Schmidt met with the president's top advisors as the government was deciding whether to bring a landmark antitrust suit against his company. What they spoke about is a matter of significant public interest. The last time a US president intervened in an antitrust action on behalf of a corporate backer of his re-election effort, it became one of the earliest scandals of the Nixon presidency.ix

A series of meetings in mid-December 2011-some highlighted by The Wall Street Journal-attest to Google's extraordinary access to senior White House officials, even in the midst of the FTC's mounting antitrust probe.x The flurry of meetings took place between top Google executives and White House officials on the one hand, followed by meetings between White House officials and the FTC Chairman.

Drummond and Shelton met again a day later on December 13 with Valerie Jarrett, one of the president's closest and most influential advisors, while the White House Chief-of-Staff, Bill Daley, met privately with FTC Chairman Leibowitz.xiv

It isn't known if the investigation was discussed at those meetings. However, the proximity of the contacts raises questions about whether the White House was acting as a conduit between Google and the FTC to resolve a thorny matter affecting one of its closest corporate allies.

The fate of the FTC probe into Google appeared to change radically right after an election in which Schmidt served as an important advisor.
