Awesome Dedicated Naval Health Researchers at Center of Fleet's Battle Against COVID-19
SAN DIEGO - Before leaving Southern California last week for predeployment training, the crew of aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) spent most of April isolated to prevent a viral outbreak before their scheduled deployment.
The Navy found enough COVID-19 test kits to help ensure no sailor with the Bremerton, Wash.-based Nimitz and the rest of Nimitz Carrier Strike Group would deploy infected with the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease. So teams with the Naval Health Research Center jumped in to help process the diagnostic tests for the deploying force of nearly 8,000.
At the time, the San Diego, Calif., based NHRC was in the midst of helping other ships and military treatment facilities process COVID-19 tests, a task that began Feb. 12. So far, "we have tested over 6,000 samples in total. That's more than we did last year, all together," Christopher Myers, the director of NHRC's infectious diseases directorate, said during a media roundtable this week.
NHRC is testing 120 to 160 samples a day, officials said. While at that rate it couldn't complete all processing of tests for big-deck ships such as Nimitz, Myers said, "we are operating seven days a week to support the requests that we get." When the outbreak began, "we were one of the few options that the DoD had" to handle testing, he added.
The novel coronavirus - officially "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2" or SARS-CoV-2 - causes the disease known as COVID-19. Infected people can suffer from mild-to-severe, flu-like symptoms including breathing difficulties, but the virus can be deadly. As of Thursday, almost 84,000 deaths in the U.S. were attributed to the virus, a jump of 1,701 from the day before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The virus is detected through one of two ways: PCR or antibody.
A PCR, or polymerase chain reaction test or assay, identifies if any genetic material of the virus is present. It's often collected through a nasal swab. An antibody test identities the presence of antibodies from an infection, and that's done through blood tests. It can help track the virus spread and show someone's prior infection, even if they don't have symptoms.
Navy researchers have been using both tests, but for different reasons, supporting naval hospitals and the fleet as cases arose of coronavirus infections on several ships, including guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG-100) and littoral combat ship USS Coronado (LCS-4).
"NHRC mobilized to support the collection of nasopharyngeal swabs for PCR testing and blood samples for serology testing from both USS Kidd sailors and the Nimitz Strike Group," spokesman John Marciano told USNI News. "NHRC rapidly created an outbreak response protocol and brought serology testing for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 online."
"There has been a lot of interest in serology testing," Marciano said. "We've begun collecting blood samples from volunteers aboard the USS Kidd as part of an outbreak investigation aboard the ship. It's not being used as a stand-alone diagnostic test, but when paired with PCR testing, it provides a better understanding of who may have been exposed to the virus."

Undercover St. Louis cop says colleagues beat him 'like Rodney King'; describes attack as 'free for all'
An undercover St. Louis police officer who was beaten by colleagues during protests in 2017 later described the attack as a "free for all" and told someone at police headquarters that he was beaten "like Rodney King," according to recently released court documents.
Detective Luther Hall's statements about the night he was attacked were used by the FBI to justify searches of four officers' cellphones and associated accounts as agents investigated both Hall's attack and the arrest or detention of other protesters following the Sept. 15, 2017, acquittal of former St. Louis police Officer Jason Stockley.
They provide the most detailed retelling of Hall's version of the attack and new information about the resulting FBI investigation.
That investigation resulted in charges in November against four police officers. Officers Dustin Boone, Randy Hays and Christopher Myers were accused of the physical assault and charged with depriving Hall of his constitutional rights and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Myers also is charged with destruction of evidence, accused of destroying Hall's cellphone. Officer Bailey Colletta was accused of lying to a federal grand jury investigating the attack. All have pleaded not guilty. Hays' lawyer, Brian Millikan, declined to comment. The other lawyers did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

Four Officers Arrested for Assaulting Undercover Cop at Protest
Four police officers in St. Louis were indicted on federal civil rights charges on Thursday after bragging about using force protesters demonstrating against the acquittal of Jason Stockley, a former police officer who killed a black man in 2011.
The indictment follows an investigation conducted by the FBI.
The slain 24-year-old, Anthony Lamar Smith, was shot five times by Stockley. Police recovered a gun from Smith's car, but found only Stockley's DNA on it, leading many to believe that the firearm was planted.
One hundred and forty people were mass arrested on October 3, 2017, after Stockley was found not guilty on charges of first-degree murder. The group included protesters, reporters and an undercover police officer.
Protests were held in the city for days surrounding the verdict.
The officer, named in the indictment as "L.H.," had been in the department for 22 years before he was allegedly subjected to excessive force at the hands of officers Dustin Boone, Bailey Colletta, Randy Hays and Christopher Myers.
"While these officers have been indicted for illegally abusing an undercover officer they mistook for a protester, there has still been no real accountability for the individual officers who engaged in the same behavior toward protesters," ACLU of Missouri Legal Director Tony Rothert said.
The officers have been suspended without pay. Some 91 cases involving the four officers have been dismissed, and local prosecutors are reviewing even more for possible dismissal.

Snippets of clues & details in the Wizard of Oz Stolen Ruby Slippers
The slippers had been on loan to the museum from Hollywood memorabilia collector Michael Shaw. Three other pairs that Garland wore in the movie are held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the Smithsonian and a private collector.
Garland, who was born Frances Gumm, lived in Grand Rapids, about 200 miles north of Minneapolis, until she was 4?½, when her family moved to Los Angeles.

The FBI said no one has yet been arrested or charged in the case, but they have "multiple suspects" and continue to investigate. As they unveiled the recovered slippers at a news conference Tuesday, they asked anyone with information about the theft to contact them. "We're not done. We have a lot of work to do," Christopher Myers, the U.S. attorney for North Dakota, said.

After nearly a yearlong investigation involving the bureau's Art Crime Team, the FBI Laboratory, and field offices in Chicago, Atlanta and Miami, the slippers were recovered during an undercover operation in Minneapolis, the statement said.
Jill Sanborn, special agent in charge of the Minneapolis division of the FBI, called the shoes' recovery a "significant milestone." But law enforcement is still seeking information about the 2005 theft, she said. "This is still a very, very active and ongoing investigation," said Sanborn.
In the documentary, Shaw says he bought the shoes from a Hollywood costume designer who found them in MGM Studios' backlot property in Culver City, California. As the story goes, Kent Warner found several pairs on a dusty shelf and took one to the famed MGM Studios auction in 1970. He kept the rest for himself – the exact number is not clear – selling them off to collectors, including Shaw. Meanwhile, a Tennessee schoolteacher won another pair in a contest in 1940. She sold them at auction in 1988 to a private collector for $165,000. Another pair has been on display in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington since 1979. In 2016, the organization launched an online campaign to raise money to restore their luster. In 2012, a group of actors led by Leonardo DiCaprio purchased a pair to be displayed at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, set to open this year in Los Angeles.

Museum staff arrived in the morning to find the shoes missing from a smashed glass case. The alarm had been tripped but a signal was not sent to police dispatch, museum co-founder John Kelsch said in the documentary. Miner and Kelsch vehemently denied rumors of an inside job. "We're the ones that want to find them because they were entrusted to us," Miner said. "Our people, they love the museum. They wouldn't have done that. These are honest people," Kelsch said.

Officials show off stolen ruby slippers from 'Wizard of Oz' found after 13 years
Ruby slippers worn in the classic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" and stolen 13 years ago in Minnesota were found this summer, authorities said, as they revealed the sparkly, newly-recovered shoes at a news conference Tuesday.
The iconic ruby red slippers – made for Judy Garland, the film's legendary star – were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 2005, FBI officials said. After years of interviews, theories and searches, the shoes were seized this July in a sting operation in Minneapolis, the FBI said. Suspects have been identified and search warrants have been executed in Minnesota and Florida, the FBI said. Prosecutors will press charges if appropriate, U.S. Attorney for the District of North Dakota, Christopher Myers said at Tuesday's news conference.
Authorities reveal pair of iconic ruby red slippers worn in original "The Wizard of Oz" film, which were recovered after a years-long search. The slippers were stolen in 2005 from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
The FBI said it's asking the public to help identify those "associated with the initial theft and the more recent scheme to defraud and extort the Markel Corporation, the owner of the slippers."Details surrounding the alleged extortion plot were not immediately clear, but the FBI said in a statement that when the plot surfaced in 2017, the Grand Rapids Police requested assistance from the FBI. The slippers are estimated to be valued in the millions of dollars, the FBI said. That pair was one of several custom-made for the role of Dorothy in the film. At least two of the existing pairs are owned by private collectors, including a pair jointly acquired by Leonardo DiCaprio and Steven Spielberg for display at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

This is interesting. The FBI found the ruby slippers missing for the past 13 years. They are keeping quiet on who had them.
These are one of the most famous pairs of red shows( a real prize for the cabal)
Sting operation recovered Judy Garland´s stolen ruby slippers from Wizard Of Oz.
A pair of ruby slippers used in The Wizard Of Oz and later stolen from a Minnesota museum were recovered in a sting operation after a man approached the shoes' insurer and said he could help get them back, the FBI said.
The slippers were on loan to the Judy Garland Museum in the late actress' hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, when they were taken in 2005 by someone who climbed through a window and broke into a small display case.
The shoes were insured for one million dollars.
The FBI said a man approached the insurer in summer 2017 and said he could help get them back.
Grand Rapids police asked for the FBI's help and after a nearly year-long investigation, the slippers were recovered in July during a sting operation in Minneapolis.
The FBI said no-one has yet been arrested or charged in the case, but they have "multiple suspects" and continue to investigate.
As they unveiled the recovered slippers at a news conference on Tuesday, they asked anyone with information about the theft to contact them.
"We're not done. We have a lot of work to do," Christopher Myers, the US attorney for North Dakota, said.
He said he would handle any prosecution.
The North Dakota link to the case was not evident and authorities declined to explain it.
The slippers had been on loan to the Garland museum from Hollywood memorabilia collector Michael Shaw.
Three other pairs that Garland wore in the film are held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Smithsonian and a private collector.
The stolen slippers' authenticity was verified by comparing them with the pair at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History in Washington.
The ruby slippers are key in the 1939 movie.
After mysteriously landing in the colourful Land of Oz after a tornado hit her farm in Kansas, Garland's character Dorothy has to click the heels of her slippers three times and repeat "there's no place like home" to return.
Rhys Thomas, author of The Ruby Slippers Of Oz, called the slippers "the Holy Grail of Hollywood memorabilia".
"They are maybe the most iconic cinematic prop or costume in movie history, and in fact, in cultural history," he said.
"They are a cultural icon."
Mr Thomas estimated that this particular pair could be worth between two and seven million dollars.
He said it is not clear in which scenes they were used, but he was "99%" sure that they appeared in the film.
