After string of shootings, Hawaii lawmakers look to add even more gun laws
Hawaii already has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, but the Democrats in control of the state legislature are digging deep into their bag of tricks to find some new and creative ways to target gun ownership after a string of shootings on the island of Oahu.
State Senator Chris Lee is among those calling for new gun regulations, calling the shootings "incredibly alarming," adding "so many young people have access to firearms and using them in ways we're not used to here in Hawaii."
The fact that juveniles have been involved in many of these recent incidents is evidence that cracking down on legal gun owners isn't going to make an impact on criminals, but that's not stopping Lee and his colleagues from moving ahead with their anti-gun agenda.
Even with the state's current gun laws, new measures were introduced this legislative session. Some lawmakers call for more frequent licensing renewals, as well as keeping guns out of the hands of those with concerning mental health issues. Lee also wants to lessen the danger once illegal guns end up in the wrong hands.
"For those who should not have access to firearms, we have to be able to track black market weapons and see how they got into the wrong hands. We want to ensure that even if you are able to acquire a firearm illegally, you are not legally able to buy ammunition for it," added Lee.
And how exactly is Lee hoping to do that? By requiring background checks on ammunition sales?
That's currently the law in California, but somehow criminals continue to get ahold of ammunition, as the state's rising homicide rate clearly demonstrates.
"There was a 94% increase in homicides from 2019 to 2021 in areas patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department," CBS Los Angeles reported. "In 2019, there were 145 homicides in Los Angeles County, a number that went up to 199 in 2020. Sheriff Alex Villanueva did not specify last year's homicides, but he said he believes that number is about 280."
Fresno, California's fifth-largest city hasn't experienced these sorts of homicide totals since the crack epidemic peaked in the mid '90s, the Fresno Bee reported. Among the state's 10 largest cities, Fresno's 74 homicides (and counting) in a city of 540,000 people is a murder rate surpassed only by Oakland.
According to Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn, there have been 57 homicides so far in the city, which he said is the highest number since 2006 (59) and second-highest since (65), CBS Sacramento reported Dec. 29, 2021.

At least 1 dead in grocery store shooting at a Washington Fred Meyer as police warn of "armed and dangerous" suspect
At least one person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a Fred Meyer grocery store in Washington on Monday afternoon, police said. The suspect, identified by police as a White man, is still on the run and is believed to be armed with a handgun.
Officers first responded to the Richland grocery store at 11:04 a.m. local time after receiving reports that shots had been fired, Richland Police Commander Chris Lee said at a press conference. It's not yet clear if any of the victims were targeted.
Local schools including Richland High and River's Edge High were placed on non-critical lockdown during the police response.

Interesting, she has a history of getting political positions after resignations:
"In May 2011, Hochul won the four-candidate special election to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Republican Chris Lee, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district in 40 years.
Hochul was defeated for reelection to Congress in the 2012 elections by former Erie County Executive Chris Collins after the boundaries and demographics of her district were changed in the decennial reapportionment process. After leaving Congress, she worked as a government relations specialist with Buffalo-based M&T Bank. In 2014, Governor Andrew Cuomo selected Hochul as his running mate in the 2014 New York gubernatorial election; after they won the election, Hochul was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New York. Cuomo and Hochul were reelected in the 2018 New York gubernatorial election. Hochul is set to become Governor of New York on August 24, 2021."

Hawaii Legislature: GOP Loses A House Seat, Stays Even In The Senate
16
A fresh crop of younger lawmakers - all of them Democrats - won legislative seats.
By Kevin Dayton / November 3, 2020
Reading time: 10 minutes.
The general election Tuesday appears to have done little to change the partisan makeup of the Hawaii Legislature, as the tiny Republican minority will hold its one seat in the Senate while losing one in the House.
But the 2020 election did launch a sizable cohort of young new candidates into public office, according to the latest round of results released Wednesday morning that showed nearly 70% voter turnout.
Three of the newcomers who were elected to the House are under 30 years old, while three other incoming freshmen are under age 40. All of those younger, incoming lawmakers are Democrats.
Democrat Stanley Chang held a comfortable lead to keep his seat from Republican former state Sen. Sam Slom.
Ronen Zilberman/Civil Beat
Efforts to elect candidates this year from the newly formed Aloha Aina Party to the Legislature fizzled, and Hawaii Republicans struggled to hang on to the handful of seats they already have in contests with candidates from the dominant Democratic Party.
The GOP held its lone seat in the 25-member Senate but saw the party's ranks shrink from five lawmakers to four in the 51-member House.
The Republicans had hoped to gain ground by seizing the Leeward Oahu seat held by Democratic Rep. Stacelynn Eli, but Eli won Tuesday in a close contest with Republican Diamond Garcia to represent District 43. That district extends from Ewa Villages to Nanakuli and Maili on the Leeward Coast, and Eli had 47.7% of the vote, while Garcia had 42.7%.
On the other side, Democrat Patrick Branco won the Windward Oahu House District 50 seat that was held for decades by Republican Rep. Cynthia Thielen, who is retiring.
Branco won nearly 57.1% of the vote in early returns, while his Republican opponent Kanani Souza had 36%. That district includes much of Kailua and the Kaneohe Bay area.
In one of the closest races of the election in Mililani's District 36, Republican Rep. Val Okimoto managed to fend off a strong challenge by Democrat Trish La Chica, who ran a well-funded campaign with the backing of public worker unions and campaign contributions from a dozen House and Senate Democrats.
Hawaii Republicans including former Gov. Linda Lingle donated generously to Okimoto's re-election campaign, and that investment paid off. Okimoto had 50.2% of the vote while La Chica had 45.8%.
Rep. Sean Quinlan, meanwhile, easily deflected a challenge by GOP candidate Boyd Ready in the North Shore's District 47, which includes the area from Haleiwa to Kaaawa. Quinlan took 55.4% of the vote to 41% for Ready.
In Ewa, Democratic former state Rep. Matt LoPresti won the closest legislative race to reclaim his old District 41 seat, which he vacated in 2018 to make an unsuccessful run for the state Senate.
LoPresti had 48.3% of the vote, while his Republican opponent David "Bradda" Alcos had 46.9%, a difference of only 201 votes. That district includes Ewa Gentry, Ewa Villages and Ocean Pointe.
In another setback for the Hawaii GOP, Kukana Kama-Toth lost by a substantial margin to Democrat Lisa Marten in the Windward race to replace Democratic Rep. Chris Lee, who vacated his District 51 House seat to run for the Senate.
Marten had 52.5% of the vote to Kama-Toth's 38.9% in District 51, which includes Waimanalo and parts of Kailua.
Senator Kurt Fevella stopped by the H3 tunnels near where the press conference with Governor Ige was happening today. September 1, 2020
Sen. Kurt Fevella was the lone Republican in the 25-member chamber.
Cory Lum/Civil Beat
The bottom line is that Democrats claimed 47 seats in the 51-member House.

Fine structure constant may vary with space, constant in time
Researchers extend direct fine structure measurements, confirm spatial variation.
Chris Lee - 4/28/2020, 11:35 AM
"One of the most exciting prospects in physics has been discovering that fundamental constants are not actually constant at all. When I first started writing, physicists and astronomers were just figuring out how to build instruments and statistical tools that would allow highly accurate measurements of fundamental constants from the distant Universe. The results have been consistently disappointing: the constants appeared to remain constant over time.
But that still leaves open the possibility that the fundamental constants may be subtly different in space rather than time. Now, new observations examine this possibility back to just about 750 million years after the Big Bang."

Report: Hollywood Stars' Award Acceptance Speeches Written by Obama, Hillary Clinton Alums
Several Hollywood stars are turning to speechwriting agencies run by partisan operatives who previously worked for the likes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, Vulture detailed in a recent report. In a piece originally aimed at finding out who has written Brad Pitt's speeches during this awards season, where the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star has scooped awards at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the BAFTAs, while being placed in prime position to win an Oscar this weekend. Noting that many of Pitt's speeches this season have been a "little too perfect," Vulture's Chris Lee reached out to Pitt's representatives, who declined to comment. Yet one speechwriting agency that asked to remain anonymous confirmed that Pitt's representatives had reached out to inquire about their services.
Another actor grabbing attention for his recent speeches is Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, who has delivered several politically charged remarks after receiving the award for Best Actor for his role as murdering nihilist Arthur Fleck. Just last week, he used his time at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) to call out Hollywood's "systematic racism" because of the ceremony's lack of black or ethnic minority nominees. One of Hollywood's most recognized speechwriting agencies is Fenway Strategies, a company founded by former Obama administration officials Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor. As well as ghostwriting speeches for TED Talks and political addresses, Fenway also provides services for people in the entertainment industry seeking to strike the right note in anticipation of receiving their award. Senior Fenway speechwriter Sam Koppelman, who previously worked as Hillary Clinton's digital strategist, speechwriter to Michael Bloomberg, and co-author of Impeach: The Case Against Donald Trump, explained that writing for actors is great because they know "how to deliver the lines." "Writing for actors is a speechwriter's dream come true," said Koppelman. "Because unlike politicians, who are not professionals at memorizing lines or delivering them in compelling and charismatic ways, actors actually know how to deliver the lines." "Maybe he just decided to do it himself and he's really good," he added. "But if you do find out who wrote them, let me know - they're good at speechwriting."
Industry insiders insist that Hollywood stars employing speechwriting agencies are nowadays a common practice, according to Lee's report. "The most common reason [to hire a ghost acceptance speech writer] is knowing the room," one source told the magazine. "Like, 'What is the difference between the PGAs, the Globes, and the BAFTAs?' Knowing the room is key. Laziness is the other reason."
