Jackpot! Expansion of Gambling in the US Wins Big at Polls
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP)- The U.S. gambling industry won big at the polls Tuesday, with three states authorizing legal sports betting and three others either approving or expanding casino gambling.
Maryland, South Dakota and Louisiana approved sports betting. That sets up a situation in which by the end of next year more than half the country could have legal sports betting, less than three years after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for all 50 states to adopt it if they chose.
Virginia approved casino gambling in four locations, Nebraska authorized adding casino games at its horse racing tracks, and Colorado expanded the number and type of casino games it can offer, along with eliminating some wagering limits.
"It appears that Americans are becoming increasingly comfortable with legalized gambling," said David Schwartz, a gambling historian with the University of Nevada Las Vegas. "The addition of casinos in Virginia and racetrack casinos in Nebraska indicates that casino-style gambling is on the upswing as well. We have reached a point where voters seem satisfied that legalizing gambling will offer positive returns for their state."
The American Gaming Association, the casino industry's main trade group, hailed the expansion votes.
"As a result of successful ballot measures in six gaming states, more Americans will have access to much needed job opportunities, dedicated tax revenue, and safe, regulated entertainment options closer to home," said Bill Miller, the organization's CEO.
By the end of 2021, at least 25 states and the District of Columbia could have legal sports betting in place.
Voters in four Virginia cities - Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth and Norfolk - approved ballot measures authorizing casinos.
Caesars Entertainment released a statement thanking voters for approving the Danville proposal.
"We look forward to fulfilling the trust the voters have placed in us by bringing 1,300 good-paying jobs, tourism dollars and economic development to the city, and we are incredibly excited to begin construction," CEO Tom Reeg said.
In South Dakota, the ballot question allows the Deadwood casinos to add in-person sports betting. For now, mobile sports betting, the largest and fastest-growing part of the industry, would not be permitted.
Nebraska allowed casino games at racetracks in Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Columbus and South Sioux City.
In Colorado, casinos in Central City, Black Hawk and Cripple Creek can do away with limits that restricted maximum bets to $100. They also will be able to offer new games including baccarat, keno, and a spinning wheel.

Q Research General #12258: Board Under Attack, The Hole Runs Deep Edition
Dow Plunges 1,800-Plus Points Over Fears of Second COVID-19 Wave Hitting US
US stocks took a massive dive into negative territory Thursday as a nationwide spike in COVID-19 coronavirus cases prompted fears of a second wave of the respiratory illness - a possible development which investors worry will delay an economic recovery even further.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index closed the day's trading with a plunge of 1,861.82 points, whereas the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices dove by 188.04 points and 527.62 points, respectively. At its lowest, the Dow had lost over 1,800 points.
Thursday's closing figures marked the Dow's biggest one-day drop since March 18, when the index plummeted by 1,338.46 points despite the Trump administration's efforts to put together a stimulus plan to ease economic concerns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The New York Stock Exchange saw companies in the travel and airline industries continue to take hits, with stocks belonging to United Airlines and Southwest Airlines dropping over 9% and share prices for the Carnival Corporation and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings falling by more than 14%.
However, travel and airline firms weren't the only ones to take an economic blow. Neither banks such as Goldman Sachs and Bank of America nor manufacturers like construction machinery and equipment company Caterpillar were able to avoid the pain on Thursday. All three saw shares dive by more than 6% during the day's trading.
Elsewhere, European and Asian stock markets didn't fare any better. The major indices all fell into negative territory over fears of a second COVID-19 wave and after the US Federal Reserve issued an economic forecast that suggested the US economy would contract by 6.5% this year before expanding by 5% in 2021.
Dan Deming, managing director at investment company KKM Financial, told CNBC Thursday that the market's downturn suggests that "maybe the market got ahead of itself" and anticipated a quick economic recovery after COVID-19-related lockdown measures began to be lifted.
"You're seeing the psychology in the market get retested today," he said. "The reality is this thing's going to linger longer than probably the market had [thought] of."
Adding onto the downward spiral, the 10-year US Treasury note yield dropped to 0.67%, and oil prices slumped by over 7%.
US Surpasses 2 Million COVID-19 Cases
Thursday's downfall came on the heels of new data that revealed the US has confirmed more than 2 million COVID-19 cases, and that more than 113,000 deaths from the disease have been recorded in the Land of the Free, according to the latest figures provided by Johns Hopkins University.
At least 20 states from Florida to California have reported seeing increases in COVID-19 cases after having eased restrictions initially imposed to stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Bill Miller, a doctor and senior associate dean for research at Ohio State University's College of Public Health, told NPR that the lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions was ultimately giving Americans a false sense of security.
"As places have been opening up, many people are taking it as a message that everything is OK and back to normal," he said. "I'm definitely worried that we're going to see some upswings, maybe not everywhere, but in many places across the country."
All 50 US states began lifting restrictions in May.

The chief of staff to former St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger is scheduled to plead guilty on Friday in U.S. District Court to charges in the pay-to-play scheme that brought down his boss.
Bill Miller is scheduled to appear in court at 10?a.m. on Friday to plead guilty to theft of honest services through bribery and mail fraud. He is pleading guilty to an "information," a formal criminal charge that does not require a grand jury vote.
The existence of a criminal case against Miller was revealed Thursday in an advisory emailed to area news reporters from the U.S. attorney's office with the schedule for Miller's court appearance. Details about the case were not revealed. (Gee I wonder why?)
He is the fourth figure to be charged in the federal investigation of Stenger's administration.
WAIT FOR IT>>related to the Balitimore style money scam?
Former St. Louis Economic Development Partnership CEO Sheila Sweeney pleaded guilty to misprision of a felony on May 10. The same day, businessman John Rallo, a Stenger campaign donor, pleaded not guilty to theft of honest services.
Conversations between Miller and other members of Stenger's inner circle, secretly recorded by federal agents, made up some of the evidence against Stenger.
Miller was a Stenger appointee to the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership and was part of an effort by Stenger to pressure Sweeney to award a lobbying contract to John Bardgett & Associates. The company and its principal had donated about $59,000 to Stenger, according to the indictment of Stenger.
Miller told Stenger's policy chief, Jeff Wagener, on Oct. 30 that Sweeney had to award the contract to Bardgett or else it would be "disastrous" for her.
"Steve's like, You don't f—- - understand, this is how this works," Miller said. "And I'm like, Yeah, I get it. It's not a problem. We'll take care of it. ... Steve wants it, let's get it done."
In another conversation recorded by federal agents, Stenger explained to Miller that awarding contracts to entities that supported him was part of the political game. "It's the art of working with people I trust and know," Stenger said.
BOOM
Miller replied: "It's the art of staying in power."
BOOM and BOOM.
I swear none of these assholes are fucking honest, it's all just how to scam and get theirs.

Bill Miller, the chief of staff to Steve Stenger, pleading guilty to bribery scheme
By Jeremy Kohler St. Louis Post-Dispatch | May 30, 2019
CLAYTON - The chief of staff to former St.
Miller did not respond Thursday to messages from a reporter seeking comment.
Miller was hired by Stenger in December 2017. He resigned on April 12, about three weeks after federal prosecutors served a subpoena to St. Louis County commanding a wide range of records. Miller said he was leaving "to pursue other employment opportunities."
He is the fourth figure to be charged in the federal investigation of Stenger's administration. Stenger pleaded guilty to three counts of the same theft of honest services charge on May 3. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 9. He could face several years in prison.
Bardgett said in response that he has never placed any conditions on his contributions to Stenger's campaign.
In another conversation recorded by federal agents, Stenger explained to Miller that awarding contracts to entities that supported him was part of the political game. "It's the art of working with people I trust and know," Stenger said.
Miller replied: "It's the art of staying in power."
An affidavit from an FBI agent to support a search warrant also revealed that Miller and Stenger in September were arranging a bribe for someone in connection with the redevelopment of the former Jamestown Mall.
In a recorded conversation Miller offered to handle "relationships" with an entity whose identity is blacked out in the affidavit, including working directly with another entity or intermediaries, also blacked out, to handle a "bribe payment."
It was not clear who was offering the bribe, nor whom it was for. Stenger told Miller he would handle it himself.
A week later, Stenger informed Miller in another recorded conversation that the probability of an unidentified County Council member voting to approve the project was "about a hundred" percent, to which Miller replied, "This deal's getting done."
Miller, an attorney, was previously an administrative law judge from January to June 2017, acting policy director for then-Gov. Jay Nixon from May 2015 to January 2017. His family owns the Missourian Publishing Company in Washington, Mo. He is listed as vice president of the company in a document filed with the Missouri secretary of state.

Suspect in Congressional Doxxing Cases Arrested
McConnell, Graham, Hatch and Lee had personal information posted online
https://www.rollcall.com/news/politics/suspect-in-doxxing-arrested
Capitol Police have arrested a suspect in the doxxing of senators and releasing personal information onto the internet.
Jackson A. Cosko, 27, of Washington, D.C., was charged Wednesday with "making public restricted personal information," witness tampering, unauthorized access of a government computer, identity theft, second degree burglery, unlawful entry and threats in interstate communications.
Cosko is in police custody pending his first appearance, which is scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, according to U.S. Attorney's Office spokesperson Bill Miller.
The Capitol Police investigation is ongoing, and Cosko could face additional charges, according to USCP spokesperson Eva Malecki. The case is being prosecuted by the Cyber Crime National Security Sections of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.
Cosko was recently an unpaid intern for Texas Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee. He no longer works there and the office is "cooperating with law enforcement."
He previously worked for Democratic Sens. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire and California's Barbara Boxer, who has since retired. Cosko was most recently listed in the Senate directory phone book as Hassan's "legislative correspondent/systems administrator." His LinkedIn profile says he left Hassan's office in May 2018.
On Monday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's home addresses in Kentucky and Washington D.C. were added to his public Wikipedia page.
During last week's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with testimony from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, the personal home addresses, home phone numbers, cellphone numbers and email addresses of GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Orrin G. Hatch and Mike Lee of Utah, were added to the public Wikipedia pages from what appeared to be an IP address connected to the Capitol.
This info was picked up by the @congressedits Twitter account, which automatically broadcasted it to thousands of followers. Twitter suspended that account this week. Posting personal information "is considered one of the most serious violations of the Twitter Rules," according to Twitter's website.

Federal prosecutors announced Friday that they will drop all charges against activists arrested and accused of rioting during President Trump's inauguration.
The decision follows two unsuccessful trials in which jurors either acquitted or deadlocked on charges against members of a largely black-clad anti-capitalism march. Other cases were dropped after a judge found prosecutors improperly withheld evidence.
"In light of the results in the cases brought to trial… the U.S. Attorney's Office has now moved to dismiss charges against the 39 remaining defendants in this matter," office spokesman Bill Miller said in an afternoon statement.

Prosecutors drop all Trump inauguration rioting cases
>The statement does not address the alleged withholding of video evidence from defense attorneys. Prosecutors allegedly failed to inform defendants about voluminous Project Veritas footage, some of which cast doubt on allegations of shared planning.
>More than 230 people were mass-arrested north of Trump's inaugural parade route after some members of the march vandalized storefronts and vehicles, leading to a police chase through downtown Washington that featured generous use of pepper spray and batons.
