BoJo Apologizes For Attending "Partygate" Garden Party But Refuses To Resign As Public Pressure Builds
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson hasn't exactly had an easy ride since taking over from his predecessor Theresa May in late 2019, just months before the COVID pandemic engulfed the world. And since the dawn of the pandemic, BoJo and his senior advisors have been repeatedly accused of hypocrisy. The issue at hand is that the British government famously imposed some of the most complicated restrictions on movement and businesses during the first year and a half of the pandemic.
As millions of Britons struggled to comply with onerous restrictions like the "rule of six", over in Downing Street, BoJo and his team sometimes acted like the rules didn't apply to them. First there was Dominic Cummings, BoJo's (deeply unpopular) senior advisor, who ended up quitting way back in November 2020 after he was caught breaking the lockdown rules that he helped to craft.
But the most recent scandal directly involves the prime minister himself, and enough public anger has been harnessed that increasingly members of the opposition (and even some loyal Tories) are pushing on him to resign. The reason is that footage has emerged from inside Downing Street showing the PM and some of his top aides holding a holiday party. The ensuing scandal over the incident has even earned its own nickname: "Partygate".
To be clear, "Partygate" doesn't refer to just one incident: An official probe is looking into at least seven occasions in 2020 when BoJo and his Downing Street staff may have held "parties" in violation of lockdown rules.But the most galling incident involves a garden party held at No. 10 back in May 2020.
The backlash has already led to the resignation of at least one BoJo aide: Allegra Stratton, a press secretary who was caught on tape joking about breaking lockdown rules.
But now it's proving harder for the government to justify the "bring your own booze" Garden Party mentioned above.
On Wednesday morning, BoJo faced the House of Commons to answer questions about "Partygate" as an official investigation led by Sue Gray continues its work. During his remarks, BoJo repeatedly apologized, but he insisted he truly didn't feel at the time that these incidents violated the lockdown guidelines, and that Gray's inquiry has so far painted him in an unfairly harsh light.
"Although I cannot support the conclusions of the current inquiry…I have learned enough that there are things that we certainly didn't get right, and I must take responsibility," BoJo said.

Million-strong rave planned after govt Covid lockdown Christmas party scandal
A massive rave at Prime Minister Boris Johnson's residence with over a million potential attendees is being organised on Facebook in protest over an alleged Downing Street Christmas party last year as the country was locked down.
Johnson has been at the center of political controversy this month after it was alleged by multiple sources that a Christmas party with dozens of attendees was held at Downing Street last year, while millions of Brits were told by the government to stay at home and away from their families to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
In protest of the allegations, DJ Jon Mancini has organised a festive rave at the prime minister's residence set for Christmas Eve, with over one million people already RSVPing to the event.
"MASSIVE RAVE AT 10 DOWNING STREET. LINE UP," the event page on Facebook declares, advising that "no social distancing" is required.
Though a disclaimer at the bottom of the page states that the event "is not real" and is merely intended to poke "fun at the powers that be," over 442,000 Facebook users have said that they will attend the party, while a further 602,000 have marked themselves as interested.
"You know some police chief in London has already held a meeting about ramping security up on xmas eve due to this event," one Facebook user said, while another joked: "I'm assuming that although we're all going, we're not going to actually tell anyone it took place right?"
Several sources have told the media that a Christmas party took place last year and a leaked video of former Downing Street Press Secretary Allegra Stratton joking about a party went viral this month.
In the footage from a press conference rehearsal, Stratton was asked about a "Downing Street Christmas Party on Friday night," to which she responded, "Is cheese and wine alright? It was a business meeting."
Warning the colleague who asked the question that the mock press conference was being "recorded," Stratton added, "This fictional party was a business meeting and it was not socially distanced" while laughing.
One unnamed source told the BBC that the "fictional party" did in fact take place and that "party games were played, food and drink were served, and the party went on past midnight."
Despite the unserious nature of the planned Christmas rave, it is currently unknown whether any Brits will turn up at the prime minister's address on Christmas Eve in protest.

The much-vaunted first-ever UK government White House-style press secretary has resigned after one year in the role and without ever having hosted a press conference, hours after footage of her discussing the hotly-contested alleged cheese and wine night held at the prime minister's official residence during lockdown emerged.
Allegra Stratton, the senior journalist-turned government spokesman, resigned on Wednesday evening amid a growing Westminster scandal revolving around a purported party that may have happened last year while London was otherwise in lockdown. The government denies the party happened but said if it had, it would have been illegal.
Footage emerged on Wednesday morning of a rehearsal press conference recorded at Downing Street with Stratton in December 2020 practicing answering questions - in this case being played by Downing Street aides to add realism in the practice - and being asked about a recent party for Downing Street staff.
Stratton joked about the event, saying in vaguely non-committal terms while laughing with colleagues: "What's the answer? ... Is cheese and wine alright? It was a business meeting."
In an apparent warning to her colleagues joking with each other on a potentially sensitive topic, Stratton then said: "This is being recorded" before saying "this fictional party was a business meeting and it was not socially distanced", before moving business on.
Whether the comments haven't gone far to clear up whether a party really happened or not - as is widely claimed - given she called it fictional and a business meeting, the jovial attitude, and apparent disregard for the government's own rules, have now, nearly a year on, become a growing scandal in Westminster and prompted Stratton to resign her government job.

Stratton is said to have made "profound" apologies for the remarks in a tearful statement outside her handsome Islington home, where she said her "leaked comments" had become a "distraction" in the "fight" against coronavirus. She said: "My remarks seemed to make light of the rules, rules that people were doing everything to obey. That was never my intention. I will regret those remarks for the rest of my days and offer my profound apologies to all of you for them.
She continued: "I understand the anger and frustration that people feel. To all of you who lost loved ones, endured intolerable loneliness and struggled with your business - I am sorry and this afternoon I have offered my resignation to Prime Minister."
It remains an open question whether Stratton's prompt ousting will be enough to sate the Westminster media's anger over the Christmas party scandal. If it emerges that members of parliament, government ministers, or senior civil servants attended the alleged festive gatherings - the BBC reports there are now three known Christmas parties that took place at Downing Street last year - more resignations could follow.

? What a pleasure it was to hear the government's Cop26 spokesperson, Allegra Stratton, explaining on the BBC's World at One why she had yet to buy an electric car.
Apparently it's because she has a bad leg.
Similarly, I was stung quite nastily by a wasp last week. That will certainly prevent me from replacing my boiler with a heat pump.

David Isaac, the provost of Worcester College, Oxford, said: "I believe higher education institutions have a responsibility to be bastions of debate and defenders of free expression", before quoting George Orwell: "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." Stirring stuff, isn't it?
Last week Isaac apologised to students "unreservedly" for having allowed Christian Concern to run its Wilberforce Academy conference at the college earlier this month (when, actually, no students were there).
The evangelical group's views did not "align with our values", the ludicrous little man snivelled.

This obnoxious event was organised by the human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith, who also acted as the judge. It was part of a wider programme of woke idiocy and witch-hunting called Generation on Trial.
Stafford Smith once went on hunger strike in support of a suspected terrorist who was detained in Guantanamo Bay. But he gave up after a few days because he was feeling a bit peckish.

Boris Govt: Misogyny to Be Recorded as a Hate Crime from Autumn
Police will begin recording offences believed to be motivated by misogyny as hate crimes in the wake of Sarah Everard's apparent murder, Boris Johnson's government has confirmed.
Speaking for the Johnson administration in the House of Lords, Home Office junior minister the Baroness Williams of Trafford said that from the autumn of 2021, "we will ask police forces to record and identify any crimes of violence against the person, including stalking and harassment and sexual offences, where the victim perceives it to have been motivated by a hostility based on their sex, which, as I have said, can then inform longer-term decisions."
Prime Minister Johnson, who describes himself as a feminist, according to his new White House style press secretary, former Guardian and BBC journalist Allegra Stratton, told the House of Commons that "We have to address the fundamental issue of the casual everyday sexism and apathy that fails to address the concerns of women - that is the underlying issue."

Boris Might Volunteer to Have Vaccination Live on TV
Boris Johnson's press secretary said she couldn't rule out the prime minister volunteering to take the new coronavirus vaccine live on television.
Addressing media on Wednesday, Allegra Stratton admitted that Prime Minister Johnson could do so to encourage public update of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which the government had the same day announced had been approved for use.
Ms Stratton said, according to Sky News: "We all know the character of the prime minister, I don't think it would be something that he would rule out.
"But what we also know is that he wouldn't want to take a jab that should be for somebody who is extremely vulnerable, clinically vulnerable, and who should be getting it before him."
The remark comes after Health Secretary Matt Hancock volunteered to be injected live on air after Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan made the suggestion.
"I'll come to where you are anytime next week if we can do this. Let's do it together, live on air. It would be powerful - it would send the right message," Mr Hancock told Mr Morgan on Wednesday.
The health minister added, however, that as both healthy middle-aged men, they would not be in the first group to be offered the vaccine.
