Coined by the Quakers in the 1950's, "speaking truth to power" is certainly not a new way of taking a stand and mobilizing society around change.

"Sir Thomas More did it at the cost of his life when he spoke truth to power against King Henry VIII; Martin Luther King Jr. did it at the cost of his freedom when he ended up in the Birmingham jail and eventually at the cost of his life."

Fast forward to the eve before 2016, set against a backdrop of #SayHerName, #BlackLivesMatter, #LoveWins, #MuslimAmericanFaces and #codeofslience. In this year of uncloaked injustice and agitation, we've heard plenty of people being heralded as speaking truth to… and/or for …. power.

As we listen to Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel address some aspects of the tragic police-killing of Laquan McDonald; as we listen to the divisive machinations of presidential candidate Donald Trump's policies towards Muslims, Hispanics and black people; as we read Supreme Court Justice Scalia's racist ideology about black youth's intelligence; as we hear the resounding call of the National Rifle Association above the silenced cries of fallen victims; As their supporters audibly, or in their silence, lift up these professed truths despite evidence to the contrary; We are left to dissect and wonder, does "speaking truth to power" mean the same thing to everybody?

There does seem to be at least one common denominator when it comes to speaking truth in the name of advancing power - and that is courage. The courage to stand upon one's own convictions - or maybe, as we've seen these past few weeks across the country, the courage to throw conviction out the window for personal or political expediency.

After all, in more ways than one, a conviction does not always require truth.

Indeed, there's a reason the game "Two Truths and a Lie" is so popular. Very often it's hard to tell the difference.

I reached out to a few people from across the country to ask what speaking truth to power means to them. Their responses are both insightful and inspirational.

Ethics: As Democrats demonize Wall Street CEOs as the "greedy" fiends of the financial crisis, they've lined their own pockets - both before and after the crisis. Nancy Pelosi's just the latest example.

The former House speaker allegedly gamed financial reforms to boost her personal stock portfolio. The brewing scandal is complicated, but here's the Reader's Digest version:

After a Pelosi staffer left to lobby on behalf of credit-card giant Visa, Pelosi delayed bringing to the House floor a bill to end lucrative "swipe fees" for Visa and other credit providers.

The bill couldn't have come at a worse time for Visa. It planned to launch an $18 billion public stock offering, so stalling Hill action became a priority. The San Francisco-based company curried favor with Pelosi by pumping cash into her re-election efforts, earning its CEO a rare one-on-one meeting with the speaker.

At the same time, Visa offered her husband a VIP cut of the IPO. Paul Pelosi jumped at the offer, buying 5,000 shares at the $44 initial price. In a couple of days, the shares soared to $64. Pelosi later bought 15,000 more, raising the total value of his investment to about $5 million. In the end, the legislation Visa fought starting in 2007 was forestalled two full years.

Publicly, Nancy Pelosi has been a frequent critic of the financial industry. The commission she impaneled in 2009 to investigate the root causes of the crisis summarily indicted Wall Street honchos, while exonerating guilty Democrats, including several who had their hands in the subprime pot. Among them:

Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae's CEO through 2005, who helped plunge the government-sponsored mortgage giant into the subprime abyss, while cooking Fannie's books to score fatter bonuses for himself and other Clinton Democrats on its board. Despite holding 20 hearings and 700 interviews, Pelosi's commission never found room for Raines on the witness list. One of the prime suspects in the crisis got off scot-free.

Henry Cisneros, Clinton's housing chief who strong-armed Countrywide Financial into signing "fair lending" contracts that exposed it to billions in risky subprime loans. Cisneros later joined Countrywide's board. (Pelosi's son also worked for Countrywide.)

Rahm Emanuel, who served on Freddie Mac's board, where he pocketed $320,000 before making millions working for an investment banker in Chicago that brokered high-cost subprime loans to minorities.

Barney Frank, who was one of Fannie's and Freddie's biggest protectors - and beneficiaries of their political donations - on Capitol Hill. Frank landed a plum Fannie job for his gay partner, Herb Moses, whose work involved relaxing Fannie's restrictions on home loans. Frank previously led the House committee charged with oversight of Fannie, which also gave at least $25,000 to Frank's mother's charity in Boston. His glaring conflicts of interest were never investigated.

Falcone reached out to Vice President Joe Biden with a hand delivered message requesting his personal assistance to help Falcone recover his funds. The memo included the same information provided to the FBI, the Office of Homeland Security and the Federal Reserve. Presumably, when Biden started to do research, someone found out and authorized Hillary Clinton to approach Biden. Biden was paid approximately two hundred million dollars ($200,000,000) to keep quiet and help block the efforts of Falcone in collecting his funds. Biden established accounts at several overseas banks in Spain and Hong Kong and the funds were diverted and deposited into these accounts.

The real unfortunate part is that President Obama received a registered letter from Falcone referencing the complaint filed with the different government agencies, requesting his assistance. To this date, the President has not responded to his letter nor taken any action to correct this injustice.

During the summer of 2010, Admiral Dennis Blair, the Head of the Security Council at that time, was made aware of the reports and facts Falcone had filed with the different government agencies. Admiral Blair informed the Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, that this problem was not going away and it needed to be addressed and corrected immediately. Admiral Blair met with the President on this matter and resigned when he realized the President and the Administration refused to act on this matter and similar matters outstanding.

The contents of the email gave Michael Herzog specific instructions to withhold payment to Falcone.

Froman used a Citigroup email address. He attached three documents: a list of women for top administration jobs, a list of non-white candidates, and a sample outline of 31 cabinet-level positions and who would fill them. Presidential Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said yesterday that only "a limited group of senior staffers and some personal friends" will be allowed to send email to what might soon be known as BlackBerry One.

"It's a pretty small group of people," Gibbs deadpanned.

No kidding.

Obama's wife is a sure bet to be on the list, and maybe his kids. Vice President Biden will probably be able to get through, along with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, adviser David Axelrod, aide Reggie Love and Gibbs.

There are the friends: Marty Nesbitt, Valerie Jarrett and Eric Whitaker from Chicago. Some Cabinet secretaries might make it; some might not. Bill Clinton might need to use his wife's account if he wants to send a message.

Gibbs would not say who, or even how many people, will be on the list. But it's a good bet that it will be easier to get invited to the Academy Awards after-party at Steven Spielberg's house, or to the VIP reception at the World Econmic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

True, very few people are allowed to sit in on the Supreme Court's weekly deliberations. And a dinner invitation to Pamela Harriman's house was pretty hard to get in her heyday. But aside from that, there's almost nothing in Washington that is more exclusive.

The president has to overcome the objections of security officials to keep his beloved handheld device, and Gibbs declined to elaborate on the specific restrictions that will be placed on the president's BlackBerry, except to say that "use will be limited and that the security is enhanced to ensure his ability to communicate, but to do so effectively and to do so in a way that is protected."

In geekspeak, what that means is that it's likely that White House IT experts will use a server-based "whitelist" for incoming messages. Only people explicitly placed on the list will be able to send messages. The rest will simply bounce back.

Gibbs also suggested that Obama's outgoing e-mail would be limited. Mail servers can be tweaked to make sure that only certain outgoing messages find their destinations.

What kind of messages will Obama be getting from this exclusive group? Gibbs said it's likely to be a mix of personal and professional.

"I've gotten e-mails from him – not recently, or not in a few days, I should say – that go from anywhere from something that's very strictly business to, 'why did my football team perform so miserably?" on either any given Saturday or any given Sunday."

So when his e-mail is released under Freedom of Information rules years from now, there's likely to be a lot of official-sounding back-and-forth. But also look for a message like "Nice tie, dude" to pop into his e-mail box after his first State of the Union address.

Rahm Emanuel likes to brag about his role in discovering Barack Obama. "Six years ago, people on the North Side of Chicago took a bet on a young kid," reporter D.H. Williams writes of their symbiotic relationship.

"Rahm and Barack have a deep history together in Chicago politics. Emanuel has been instrumental in the rise of Barack Obama from neophyte senator to the next president of the United States. Getting virtually no media attention, Rahm Emanuel has been by Obama's side during most of the last two years on the campaign trail."

If Karl Rove was George W. Bush's architect, the same can be said of the Emanuel connection. When Obama bowed and groveled at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) convention on June 4, 2008, it was Emanuel who escorted him to meet the executive board afterward.

Emanuel has been the operative who, according to the Chicago Tribune, "remade the Democratic Party in his own image." Illinois Rep. Ray LaHood (R) seconded this notion. "He legitimately can be called the golden boy of the Democratic Party today. He recruited the right candidates, found the money and funded them, and provided issues for them. Rahm did what no one else could do."

Worst of all, Emanuel is a rampant warmonger who takes his cues from the neo-cons. In his book The Plan: Big Ideas for America, he wrote, "We need to expand the U.S. Army by 100,000 more troops."

What will America's next target be under an Obama presidency? Sources close to Emanuel say that he has a "Zionist obsession with Iran."

Initial media reports described Emanuel as a vulgar, Chicago-based enforcer who had an aggressive, in-your- face, pit-bull style. Others painted him as a partisan Washington insider with strong ties to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).Although these labels seem harsh, the reality is far worse.

Rahm Emanuel, nicknamed "Rahmbo," is a pro- Israel Orthodox Jew who was educated in a Talmudic yeshiva and served as a volunteer in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). He is a dual citizen of Israel, which his office refused to deny when AFP inquired. Israel is the only nation where Americans can apply for and obtain citizenship without automatically renouncing U.S. citizenship.

The Broward School Board selected Robert Runcie, chief of staff to the Chicago Board of Education, as the district's new superintendent, the first black man to permanently hold the job.

Runcie, a Harvard-educated computer consultant who was recruited to help clean up Chicago schools after an episode of mismanagement, will now head the nation's sixth-largest school district.

Touting his experience in running operations in the nation's third-largest school district, Runcie was chosen over Bernard Taylor Jr., superintendent in Grand Rapids, Mich.

"I've kind of fallen in love with Broward," Runcie told the board Wednesday in a final round of interviews. "Working together, the sky's the limit in terms of what we can do."

Runcie has several connections to the Obama Administration. His former boss in Chicago is Arne Duncan, the current U.S. Secretary of Education. In Chicago, the school district must answer to the office of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was the previous chief of staff to President Obama.

Duncan, gave Runcie his entry into education, tapping him in 2003 to join his management team as chief information officer. Runcie was charged with bringing order to a technology department marred with delays in installing school computers funded through a federal grant.

That pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

The Temple of Set was established in 1975 by Lt. Col. Michael Aquino and other members of the priesthood of the Church of Satan, who left because of administrative and philosophical disagreements with its founder, Antony LaVey and, as Aquino said, because he was disgusted at the corruption within the Church of Satan.

The Temple of Set was incorporated in California that same year as a nonprofit church. Throughout much of the 1980s, Aquino was at the center of a controversy involving the Pentagon's acquiescence to outright Satanic practices inside the military services.

Aquino was also a prime suspect in a series of pedophile scandals involving the sexual abuse of hundreds of children, including the children of military personnel serving at the Presidio U.S. Army station in the San Francisco Bay Area.

But even as Aquino was being investigated by Army Criminal Investigators for involvement in the pedophile cases, he retained highest-level security clearances, and was involved in pioneering work in military psychological operations ("psy-ops").

According to an article: in the Oct. 30, 1987 San Francisco Examiner, one of the victims had identified Aquino and his wife as participants in the child rape. According to the victim, the Aquinos had filmed scenes of the child being fondled in a bathtub.

The child's description of the house, which was also the headquarters of Aquino's Satanic Temple of Set, was so detailed, that police were able to obtain a search warrant.

During the raid, they confiscated 38 videotapes, photo negatives, and other evidence that the home had been the hub of a pedophile ring, operating in and around U.S. military bases.
