The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is a division of Johns Hopkins University based in Washington, D.C., United States, with campuses in Bologna, Italy; and Nanjing, China. It is generally considered one of the top graduate schools for international relations in the world. The institution is devoted to the study of international affairs, economics, diplomacy, and policy research and education.

Among the political scientists and economists based here are former World Bank chief economist Anne Krueger; and military historian and former counselor of the U.S. Department of State Eliot Cohen. Its students are selected from a large pool of applicants from all parts of the world.

The SAIS Washington D.C. campus is located on Massachusetts Avenue's Embassy Row, just off Dupont Circle and across from the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and next to the Center for Global Development and the Peterson Institute. The school has hosted world leaders on a regular basis for public debate in international affairs.
The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) was founded in 1943 by Paul H. Nitze and Christian Herter as a standalone graduate school and became part of The Johns Hopkins University in 1950. The school was established during World War II by a group of statesmen who sought new methods of preparing men and women to cope with the international responsibilities that would be thrust upon the United States in the postwar world.

The founders assembled a faculty of scholars and professionals (often borrowed from other universities) to teach international relations, international economics, and foreign languages to a small group of students. The curriculum was designed to be both scholarly and practical. The natural choice for the location of the school was Washington, D.C., a city where international resources are abundant and where American foreign policy is shaped and set in motion. When the school opened in 1944, 15 students were enrolled.

In 1955 the school created the Bologna Center in Italy, the first full-time graduate school located in Europe under an American higher-education system. By 1963 Johns Hopkins SAIS outgrew its first quarters on Florida Avenue and moved to one of its present buildings on Massachusetts Avenue. In 1986, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center was created in Nanjing, China, completing the school's global presence.
Johns Hopkins SAIS is a global school with campuses in three continents. It has nearly 700 full-time students in Washington, D.C.; 190 full-time students in Bologna, Italy; and about 160 full-time students in Nanjing, China. Of these, 60 percent come from the United States and 37 percent from more than 70 other countries. Around 50% are women and 22% are from U.S. minority groups. SAIS Europe is home to the Bologna Center and the only full-time international relations graduate program in Europe that operates under an American higher-education system, and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, which teaches courses in both Chinese and English, is jointly administered by Johns Hopkins SAIS and Nanjing University.

The school offers multidisciplinary instruction leading to the degrees of master of arts for early and mid-career professionals, as well as a doctor of philosophy program. Approximately 300 students graduate from the Washington, D.C., campus each year from the two-year master of arts program in international relations and international economics.
In June 2009 The Protection Project at SAIS partnered with the Koons Family Institute of the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), creating the Child Protection Project, to draft a model law focusing on the issues of child protection; in particular: "neglect, abuse, maltreatment, and exploitation". The primary objectives of the Child Protection Project are to "research existing child protection laws in the 193 member states of the United Nations (UN); convene a series of regional expert working group meetings to establish a common definition for 'child protection'; create a database of national legislation and case law on child protection issues from around the world; and draft, publish, and globally disseminate model child protection legislation".

The drafting process included six expert group meetings, held in Singapore, Egypt, Costa Rica, Spain, Turkey, and the U.S. The final version of the Child Protection Model Law was published in January 2013. It was presented to the members of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child during its 62nd Session in Geneva, Switzerland, in January 2013. It was also presented before the 129th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva in October 2013. Accompanying the Child Protection Model Law, ICMEC and The Protection Project published a companion "100 Best Practices in Child Protection" guide in 2013.

The 50 cities where the most people are moving away from can primarily be found in the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast, particularly in states like Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and New York. Among the cities where people are leaving in droves are places such as Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, New York, and Los Angeles.

William Frey, demographer at the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy research group, explained that these cities that have been losing thousands of residents due to migration are part of the long-term trend of movement from the Northeast and the Midwest to warmer climates, a trend that has increased in recent years.

"The story of the broader migration pattern in the U.S. is from Snow Belt to Sun Belt," Frey said. "That migration has slowed a little bit in the early part of the decade, when we were still dealing with the aftermath of the recession, but it's coming back."

Frey added that the reasons behind the decline in population in cities like Los Angeles and New York – overcrowding and high prices – are very different than the reasons for decreases in other cities on this list, notably Rust Belt cities like Flint, Michigan; Toledo, Ohio; and Rockford, Illinois; and even larger cities like St. Louis, Cleveland, and Milwaukee. These cities have been losing domestic migrants for decades due to stagnating economic conditions stemming from the decline of American manufacturing.

Pundits, journalists score viral hits with tweets scaremongering the US ambassador to Germany

The U.S. ambassador to Germany just advocated the overthrow of its ruling party, according to certain politicos and pundits.

What a scandal! What an outrage! Or maybe not.

Ambassador Richard Grenell told Breitbart London this month that he aims to "empower" conservatives in Europe.

Here is what he said:


There are a lot of conservatives throughout Europe who have contacted me to say they are feeling there is a resurgence going on.
I absolutely want to empower other conservatives throughout Europe, other leaders. I think there is a groundswell of conservative policies that are taking hold because of the failed policies of the left.
There's no question about that and it's an exciting time for me. I look across the landscape and we've got a lot of work to do but I think the election of Donald Trump has empowered individuals and people to say that they can't just allow the political class to determine before an election takes place, who's going to win and who should run.

President Trump's appointee to act as the U.S. ambassador Germany continued, taking aim at Europe's political "elites" with the sort of rhetoric one would expect from a Trump official with a very populist worldview.

"That's a very powerful moment when you can grasp the ability to see past the group-think of a very small elitist crowd telling you ... have no chance to win or you'll never win, or they mock you early on," he told Breitbart London.

Grenell also said that the key to victory for European conservatives is to focus on everyday issues that matter to working class voters, including tax cuts and immigration reform. An example of a politician who Grenell believes fits the mold is Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, a vigorous opponent of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her immigration policies.

There's a good question here about whether it's appropriate for Grennell to vocalize support for specific political movements and politicians around the European continent. I'd argue it's inappropriate for him to throw his support behind specific actors, especially if they're known opponents of Chancellor Merkel, with whose government he will have to work.

But leave it to certain members of the press and political class to take it a step further by accusing Grenell of basically calling for outright revolution in Germany.

"The American ambassador in Germany has just implied that he would like to unseat the current German government," Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum said in a tweet that has been shared by more than 7,000 social media users.

She added later after she encountered pushback on her initial tweet, "Sorry, but given the context, the implications are perfectly clear. In an interview with Breitbart, when he says he wants to 'empower' the 'conservatives' who fight the 'failed policies of the left' he doesn't mean the ... coalition [which includes Merkel's party]."

Tom Wright, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, also said in a note that has been retweeted by more than 5,000 people that Grenell said he would "intervene in internal politics of Europe to empower anti-establishment conservatives. Directly contradicts State Dept line that Trump admin is neutral."

There's a legitimate criticism here for a U.S. ambassador voicing support for certain politicians, and suggesting opposition to certain European political parties. Why accuse him of saying things he didn't actually say? Why lose the legitimate criticism in overwrought hand-wringing?

Grenell did not respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.

As Rachman summarized in one paragraph: "By contrast, Mr Macron - for all his charm - is finding it hard to persuade others to follow his lead. Following his departure from Washington, Mr Trump called his French counterpart a 'wonderful guy'. But for all the quirky, dandruff-plucking bonhomie between the two presidents, there is little evidence that Mr Macron was able to shift Mr Trump on anything substantive."

Perhaps the growing rift between the US and France is partly why France jumped on board the "Assad has used chemical weapons" bandwagon with more keenness than any other major player, participating in what was an illegal assault on Syria's sovereignty approximately a month ago. While this attack made major headlines at the time, France was also upping the ante on its troop presence inside the country, yet again another illegal move (this illegal invasion did not receive anywhere near as much media coverage). In fact, it was Macron who took credit for Trump's decision to renege on his word to pull US troops out of Syria completely.

This is just speculation, but it seems as though the international void that has arisen by the uncertainty and unreliability of the Trump administration has left a gaping wound that Macron has decided to pounce upon. However, he knows that France cannot realistically pull off such a feat on its own.

Right now, Macron has signaled he wants to strengthen the EU as an entity by pursuing a pan-European campaign for the 2019 European Parliament election. However, while Macron's vision for the world is more in line with that of the rest of Europe than Trump's America, he has still struggled to even pull Germany on board, which is essentially the powerhouse in Europe. There is always the United Kingdom, but the future of Brexit puts this relationship increasingly at odds as well.

In his bid to travel the entire globe and build a new global vision, Macron also proposed a new Australia-France-India axis to confront China's rising role in the Pacific. Foreign policy experts have already raised doubts that France could pull off such an alliance, given the notable distance from Paris to the Pacific. And that's even before one considers that the special collectivity of France, New Caledonia, will be voting for its independence in a referendum on November 4, 2018.

Perhaps Macron's problem is that he is trying to do too much in too short a space of time. The Brookings Institute notes that Macron once claimed his movement to be neither on the left or the right, while still avoiding the term "centrist," before stating that it was actually on both the right and the left. This signals an unusual attempt to claim to represent everyone's interests in both the domestic and international sphere at any given time; one that is ultimately doomed to fail miserably.

Furthermore, Macron's purported internationalism is not playing too well at home either. On this past Sunday, thousands of people protested in Paris under the banner 'One year is enough' to mark the president's one year anniversary as leader. Approximately one week prior, tens of thousands marched again through the French capital under a sarcastic slogan 'Fête à Macron' (Party for Macron), following another demonstration that took place on May 1.

While he focuses on improving France's standing in the international arena somewhat dismally, the French people are not too thrilled by his domestic policies. "What we want specifically is to resist, show him our anger, show him that there are some French people who did not vote for him, do not agree with what he is trying to do and will resist in so far as we can," reportedly said Sylvie Brissonneau, who took part in the May 5 protest. 

None of this bodes too well for Macron's vision for France nationally or internationally. As Rachman astutely concluded: "The danger for Mr Macron is that he could be a leader who is out of tune with the times. At home, he is a liberal economic reformer, at a time when 'neoliberalism' has never been less fashionable. He is a pro-European at a time of mounting Euroscepticism across the EU. He is a globalist and an internationalist at a time when protectionism and nationalism are on the march."

Macron's vision and its impending doom can be best summarized by the tree planted by Macron at the White House in April, that mysteriously disappeared not long after, having been placed in quarantine as it had been brought into the US from overseas - think of it like Trump's travel ban overriding Macron's agenda, but for trees.

The Deep State Mob Targets Nunes

In an absurd tweet on Wednesday, Lawfare's executive director suggested that Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) should be replaced as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee:

That wasn't even the most moronic tweet in Susan Hennessey's arsenal. She went on to warn how "the intelligence oversight system is based on trust. Without trust it is irretrievably broken. The [Intelligence Community] and [Department of Justice] don't trust Nunes and he cannot perform his job functions." Get that? The Intelligence Community and the Justice department-which have proven to be as political and devious as a Chicago ward boss-are the white hats and Nunes is the black hat.

Fortunately, it's unlikely that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will heed an unreasonable demand from a political partisan tied to the left-leaning Brookings Institution.

But it does unveil the latest tactic of the Left (and some on the Right) to discredit and ultimately oust Nunes, the only Republican on Capitol Hill who appears to have his act together when it comes to exposing the players behind the Trump-Russia election collusion scheme.

The Deep State Mob is continuing to squeeze the California congressman after he again threatened to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for ignoring congressional subpoenas and withholding crucial documents from Congressional investigators. Nunes has minced no words about how the Justice Department and FBI have been "stonewalling" his committee's investigation for months. And as Nunes inches closer to revealing the stinking core of what is potentially the biggest political corruption scandal in U.S. history, the Deep State Mob is trying to close in on him first.

Nunes and other House Republicans want to find out exactly how and why the FBI's counterintelligence operation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government began in the summer of 2016, and what intelligence sources either aided or instigated that probe. The latest showdown, according to the Washington Post, is because Nunes has issued a subpoena demanding that the Justice Department provide information about an unnamed individual referenced in a classified letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month.

While there are few details about the individual in question, the Wall Street Journal's Kimberly Strassel intimates that the person could have been a mole inside the Trump campaign:

We know Nunes's request deals with a "top secret intelligence source" of the FBI and CIA, who is a U.S. citizen and who was involved in the Russia collusion probe. We might take this to mean that the FBI secretly had a person on the payroll who used his or her non-FBI credentials to interact in some capacity with the Trump campaign.

Strassel, who has been carefully covering this scandal, has a hunch of who the source is but couldn't confirm it.

The Justice Department is fighting Nunes's request on the basis that any disclosure would "risk severe consequences, including potential loss of human lives, damage to relationship with valued international partners, compromise of ongoing criminal investigations and interference with intelligence activities." While Justice officials met with Nunes and committee member Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) late Thursday, they did not allow them to see the information in question. Nunes indicated that he would continue to press the department to fulfill his request.

Now Nunes's foes are portraying him as a rogue actor - perhaps even a traitor - who is willing to see intelligence assets killed in order to carry water for President Trump. CNN national security analyst Asha Rangappa echoed the Justice Department's warning that Nunes is risking lives to achieve political ends.

In a one-two punch, Hennessey's boss upped the attacks on Nunes during a discussion with former FBI Director James Comey on Friday. Benjamin Wittes, Lawfare's editor and close Comey pal, rhetorically asked Comey, "what's Devin Nunes gonna be able to tell his grandchildren? It's a serious question. He is affirmatively acting in a fashion that some of us judged, you know, Edward Snowden very harshly for behaving in a fashion that puts at risk intelligence sources and methods when being told so by the senior levels of the Justice Department." (Others have tried to get the "Nunes-Is-Literal-Snowden" trope going before. We'll see if it finally takes off next week.)

Two of James Comey's most loyal confidantes and supporters within the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are no longer working with the law enforcement agency as of Friday.

Out at the bureau are two high-profile attorneys: James Baker and Lisa Page.

The FBI's former general counsel, Baker was reassigned in mid-December 2017 after FBI Director Chris Wray brought in his own team of top advisors as part of a staffing shake-up. Baker's ouster was long-expected and non-controversial-though some reports tied Baker to reporter David Corn, who broke the Steele dossier story. Corn later denied Baker was his source. Baker leaves under the cloud of a Justice Department investigation into his alleged leaking but he has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

A longtime friend and confidant of Comey, Baker's departure is likely to raise at least a few eyebrows. In comments to the New York Times, Baker said he will be joining the Brookings Institution-a centrist think tank largely funded by the Al Thani dictatorship which rules over the tiny Gulf state of Qatar. Baker will be writing for Brookings' Lawfare blog, a hawkish, doctrinaire and establishment national security blog administered by Comey's friend Benjamin Wittes.

Page's ouster is likely to provoke even more speculation.

Over the past few months, Page has found herself an unlikely source of conservative outrage. A series of text messages between Page and FBI Agent Peter Strzok revealed deep antipathy toward Donald Trump as well as some pointed criticism of Hillary Clinton and others during the 2016 general election. The Page-Strzok correspondence was heavily cited by conservatives as proof-positive evidence of FBI bias against Trump. (Strzok, at one point, was the FBI agent in charge of the Russia investigation.)

It's presently unclear where Page is going to land next. Though, according to Politico, an anonymous source "close to her" says she already has a new job lined up, too.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry has reportedly engaged in clandestine diplomacy with a top Iranian official in an attempt to salvage the nuclear deal framework.

Kerry, who brokered the Iran deal for the Obama administration, met with Foreign Minister Javad Zarif about two weeks ago at the United Nations in Manhattan, a person briefed on the meetings told the Boston Globe.

The meeting was their second in two weeks, and came amid a whirlwind of meetings between Kerry and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, European Union official Federica Mogherini, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

President Donald Trump has threatened to reimpose sanctions on Iran at the next deadline for certifying Iran's compliance with the deal, which comes on May 12.
Kerry's flurry of clandestine diplomacy highlights his desperation to save the Iran nuclear deal, which he sees as a signature achievement.

The deal, between Iran and the five permanent members of the US security council, plus Germany and the EU, saw Iran agree to halt its nuclear weapons program for a decade in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Kerry's involvement in trying to preserve the deal after leaving office came as a surprise to foreign policy experts.

'It is unusual for a former secretary of state to engage in foreign policy like this, as an actual diplomat and quasi-negotiator,' Michael O'Hanlon, a foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution, told the Globe.

'Of course, former secretaries of state often remain quite engaged with foreign leaders, as they should, but it's rarely so issue-specific, especially when they have just left office.'
The shadowy diplomacy will raise questions of a violation of the Logan Act, which prohibits private citizens acting on behalf of the United States during a dispute with foreign governments.

But the obscure 18th century law has never been used to prosecute anyone - although it was raised to criticize Mike Flynn for his discussions with the Russian ambassador after the 2016 election.

Macron, whom Kerry met with in New York and Paris, in meetings conducted in both English and French, has been actively lobbying Trump to remain in the Iran deal.

The French president said this week that that leaving the deal could mean war.

Meanwhile, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing Trump to take a more aggressive posture toward Iran, Israel's archenemy.

This week Netanyahu gave a presentation claiming he had proof that Iran 'lied' about its past nuclear weapons program.

On Thursday, Zarif threated to withdraw from the nuclear deal, saying Iran will not 'renegotiate or add onto' the deal.

The five-minute video shows Zarif behind his desk, delivering his message on the deal. He offers background first about the deal before laying into Trump and criticizing Europe for offering 'the United States more concessions from our pocket.'

'On 11 occasions since, the U.N. nuclear watchdog has confirmed that Iran has implemented all of its obligations,' Zarif, who studied in the U.S., says in American-accented English. 'In contrast, the U.S. has consistently violated the agreement, especially by bullying others from doing business with Iran.'

The quiet lobbying campaign - by him and others - is being conducted below the radar because he and his allies believe a high-profile defense of the deal by prominent Democrats would only backfire and provoke Trump, making it more likely the president would pull the United States out of the deal.

"Part of the equation is if Ernie [Ernest Moniz, the former US energy ecretary] or John made a bold statement, [Trump] is . . . crazy, and he might do the opposite just to spite them," said one source who has worked with Kerry. "You're liable to spur this guy in a direction you don't want him to go in, just to be spiteful."

Moniz was a key part of the negotiating team, meeting with his Iranian counterpart as they determined some of the technical scientific details.

A former Obama White House official said there is little to be gained by aiming the effort directly at Trump.

"At least from our network, you're not going to find messages aimed at him directly," said the official. "It would be counterproductive. Anything with our brand attached to it, he'll run in the opposite direction."

Democratic lawmakers in Congress also have been relatively quiet, and not all share Kerry's belief that the deal is essential for preventing a nuclear arms race in the volatile region. Kerry has quietly tried to bolster support in Congress. In recent weeks he's placed dozens of phone calls and, often with Moniz by his side, has lobbied members of Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan. While he is not negotiating as he did as secretary of state, he is attempting through quiet advocacy to preserve what he accomplished.

Kerry supporters see in this campaign some of his trademark traits, especially his unflagging energy even in the face of potential failure. Critics see something else, a former office holder working with foreign officials to potentially undermine the policy aims of a current administration.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Under terms of the deal, the United States is supposed to waive sanctions, which come up for review every three or four months, as long as Iran remains in compliance. Trump is threatening to reimpose sanctions on Iran when the next deadline comes on May 12, which would essentially mean the United States is pulling out of the deal. Trump has ridiculed Kerry for a deal that he says is not harsh enough on Iran, saying that inspectors should have broader access, portions of the deal should never expire, and that Iran's ballistic missile program should also be curtailed.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provided further ammunition for critics of the deal, unveiling documents that showed Iranian efforts to build its nuclear program before the 2015 deal was reached.

Kerry and others said the documents were nothing new, and illustrated the need for an inspections regime to make sure Iran is complying with the current agreement.

When US President Donald Trump fired a barrage of Tomahawk missiles at Syrian government targets last week, it was a good day for defense contractors, at least.

In the aftermath of the strike, which Trump claimed was in retaliation for an alleged chemical attack by the Syrian government, stocks in Tomahawk missile manufacturer Raytheon surged. Raytheon stock has climbed more than 18 percent in 2018 so far. In fact, stocks in defense companies have been climbing in general since Trump entered office promising "historic" increases in military spending.

Almost a year ago to the day, Trump delivered another bump to the defense companies after attacking Syrian government positions for the first time - also in response to an alleged chemical attack, evidence for which remains in question.

After that strike Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics also rose, gaining nearly $5 billion in market value when trading began the next day, even as the wider market slumped.

Later, when Trump appointed the famously militaristic John Bolton as his national security adviser in March, guess what happened? Shares in US energy and defense companies surged yet again. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out: war is profitable. The more missiles Trump fires, the more money these companies make.

But where do the think tanks come in?

There is a pervasive myth that Washington DC 'think tanks' are neutral and unbiased players in foreign policy analysis. But where do these centers for foreign policy 'analysis' get their money from? You guessed it: defense companies.

There are a few think tanks which dominate in American foreign policy debates. They include the Center For European Policy Analysis (CEPA), the Atlantic Council, the German Marshall Fund (GMF), the Brookings Institution and the Heritage Foundation. All five of them receive generous donations from Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Three of them also receive funding from the Boeing Company.


Corporations like Exxon Mobil, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, and Bell Helicopter are also big donors to think tanks. Bell Helicopter is a funder of CEPA, while Exxon funds Brookings, GMF and the Atlantic Council. BAE Systems donates to CEPA, while Northrop Grumman gives to the Atlantic Council. This is not to even mention the money they get directly from US government departments and NATO, which also helps explain their consistently anti-Russian analysis.

Nonetheless, these think tanks enjoy an undue air of independence. Experts who work for these defense contractor-funded institutes are quoted frequently in mainstream newspapers and invited on mainstream channels, where they are presented as independent voices. But those independent voices somehow always seem to be in favor of policies that benefit weapons manufacturers.

War profiteers are filling their coffers in return for 'analysis' which promotes military action and massively inflates the threat posed to America by countries like Russia, for example.

A glance at the Twitter feed of CEPA reveals almost obsession-like focus on the so-called threat from Russia. In 2016, the Lockheed and BAE Systems-funded think tank suggested in a report on information warfare that people who have "fallen victim to Kremlin propaganda" should be "deradicalized" in special programs.

The NATO-funded Atlantic Council has consistently lobbied for regime change in Syria. In the days surrounding Trump's military actions against Syria last week, the Atlantic Council published multiple  pieces of analysis and interviews with a single theme: that Trump did not or would not go far enough with one night of strikes. Earlier, when the alleged chemical attack took place, the think tank argued that Syrian President Bashar Assad was "indulging an addiction" and called on the US to take new military action against him. For some reason, diplomacy does not seem to be high on the Atlantic Council's agenda.

It seems the more money defense contractors throw at think tanks, the more those think tanks will argue in favor of the military policies that will make those companies the most money. It's a vicious cycle, but one which doesn't take much think tank-style 'analysis' to  figure out.

The sad thing for the think tank lobbyists, is that the money they make calling for war is nothing in comparison to the money Lockheed, Raytheon, Boeing and the rest make from it. Maybe they should ask for a raise.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out: war is profitable. The more missiles Trump fires, the more money these companies make.

But where do the think tanks come in?

There is a pervasive myth that Washington DC 'think tanks' are neutral and unbiased players in foreign policy analysis. But where do these centers for foreign policy 'analysis' get their money from? You guessed it: defense companies.

There are a few think tanks which dominate in American foreign policy debates. They include the Center For European Policy Analysis (CEPA), the Atlantic Council, the German Marshall Fund (GMF), the Brookings Institution and the Heritage Foundation. All five of them receive generous donations from Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Three of them also receive funding from the Boeing Company.


Corporations like Exxon Mobil, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, and Bell Helicopter are also big donors to think tanks. Bell Helicopter is a funder of CEPA, while Exxon funds Brookings, GMF and the Atlantic Council. BAE Systems donates to CEPA, while Northrop Grumman gives to the Atlantic Council. This is not to even mention the money they get directly from US government departments and NATO, which also helps explain their consistently anti-Russian analysis.

Nonetheless, these think tanks enjoy an undue air of independence. Experts who work for these defense contractor-funded institutes are quoted frequently in mainstream newspapers and invited on mainstream channels, where they are presented as independent voices. But those independent voices somehow always seem to be in favor of policies that benefit weapons manufacturers.

Even here in Work Camp A we see plenty of clear signs that the National Security isn't served too well by a counter-ideologal mantra like "eat, fuck, work, buy, drink, fuck, work, buy".
There was a brilliant Bedouin distillation at the front of the invading column during the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Remember? The guy was so happy our boys were there that when asked by an embedded hack what he liked so much about America, he replied "Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy". This is what the seedier elements from Iraq's own society once had in mind with a hoped-for "freedom" (a benevolent promise offered by invading troops, later understood to be an effect enjoyed only by relocation to Work Camp A), and it's an idea that has probably actually persisted somewhat. Because the strategists at the Brookings Institute and other think tanks seem happy to advertise these three things - Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy - as being the best of what we have to offer the world. Its certainly what the Iranians are being offered on LA-based Persian satellite networks — this whole "look at how free and fun it is in the land of freedom, tits and drunkenness! Look what you're missing!!" My question is: are they wrong?? Since we are deliberately making an appeal to the basest, most scumbag-like elements of world society, does this not mean that the end result for our own country lies in that direction? If so, I believe "Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy" is what should be flying up there on our flag now. I say this out of deepest respect for the America of ingenuity, strong work, and good wholesome character. If these are just legendary archaisms, we should let Old Glory retire with some dignity, as a positive beacon of what once was and now isn't, and should not drag it through the mud of today. If "Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy" is more current with the times, let's change it to that. As a slogan on a flag it would have the merit of being honest. Unfortunately, I don't think our servicemen would be all that excited about fighting and dying for "Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy". Much to their credit.

The Man Who Took John McCain into Syria

Even though I had known about his work for some time, the first time I met Mouaz Moustafa in person was a few months ago in June 2013 at the Brookings Institution U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar. Only a few weeks earlier, Mr. Moustafa had successfully helped United States Senator John McCain (R-AZ) enter into Syria from Turkey to meet with members of Syrian resistance rebel forces.

As the executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force- an American nonprofit that helped organize the McCain trip- Mouaz Moustafa played an integral role in bringing Senator McCain into Syria and he recently spoke to me about how he was able to successfully bring McCain into a civil war in one of the bloodiest hotspots in the Middle East today.

"In my work as executive director for the Syrian Emergency Task Force and Political Director for United for a Free Syria, I am regularly on Capitol Hill advocating on behalf of the Syrian People," Mouaz Moustafa told me during an interview explaining the beginnings of his interactions with the Arizona Senator's office. "Senator McCain has [always] been very involved in Middle East affairs and has stood by the Syrian People's revolution and so we had met the Senator and his staff in the past to discuss US Policy and Syria."

When it came to actually visiting Syria in the midst of a civil war, Moustafa made it quite clear that it "was Senator McCain's decision to go to Syria" and that the Syrian Emergency Task Force was "honored to be given the responsibility of coordinating his meetings with commanders from the Free Syria Army in [both] Turkey and Syria."

In terms of actually safely getting Senator McCain into Syria, he mentioned that the "route to Syria was in a car convoy from Gaziantep [in southeast Turkey] to the Killis boarder crossing and into Syrian territory." According to Moustafa, all together there were three separate meetings with Senator McCain and rebel forces.

The first meeting with McCain included 10 rebel commanders including General Salim Idriss, who is the Chief of Staff of the Supreme Military Council (SMC) of the Free Syrian Army, which is the primary Syrian umbrella rebel group. According to Moustafa, Senator McCain was the only person from the American side to engage in conversation with the FSA Commanders.

He said that the main conversations between Senator McCain and rebel commanders revolved around Iranian interference in Syria, as well as the increased presence of Hezbollah and the threat of future extremism. (Mr. Moustafa served as primary translator during these meetings with Senator McCain).

"The Senator and the Commanders had a great conversation which ended with Senator McCain promising not to rest until he can get the US government to show leadership in supporting the revolution and protecting the Syrian People," Moustafa later concluded about the meetings.

According to him, Senator McCain "came away with a much more thorough understanding of the conflict and the situation on the ground. He was reassured that the United States Government has vetted the 'good guys' that we must support [in order to] to defeat the regime and marginalize any extremists. The Senator saw the challenges faced by the Syrian people against this oppressive regime and spoke to the Free Syria Army [officials] that have defected from the Regime's army and took up arms to defend their families and the Syrian people."

In his opinion, Senator John McCain came back to the United States "a much more informed and stronger advocate for the Syrian cause and this visit brought much needed media attention to the conflict in Syria," said Moustafa. "I believe that the visit also brought greater pressure on the Obama Administration to have greater leadership when it comes to the situation in Syria."

Even though the unnecessary bloodshed of the Syrian civil war still continues, if there is going to be any peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict, it is going to be people like Mouaz Moustafa who are going to be a part of the solution since he was the first person who was able to successfully take an American senator into Syria.

What is nagging at me is that these alleged promises or concessions from Kim Jong-un seem so out of character for North Korea's 34-year-old leader. Since he came to power, Kim has been fast-forwarding the nuclear weapons program, eschewing diplomacy, and mocking the leaders of the United States, South Korea, Japan, and China. Kim has taken full ownership of the North's nuclear weapons program, enshrined it in its constitution, and for more than six years has explicitly stated that it was not a bargaining chip.

There has been very good analysis about why Trump should not have accepted, whether Kim Jong-un is being sincere, the risks and opportunities of a Kim-Trump meeting, and how the United States should prepare Mr. Trump. But we've already built an analytic infrastructure and policymakers are furiously trying to plan next steps based on a possibly incomplete or false rendering of what happened in Pyongyang.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (really into vaccines) has a director that was a "former" CFR board member named:

Ann M. Fudge - Former chairman and CEO of marketing company Young & Rubicam Brands. She previously served as president of the Beverages, Desserts and Post Division, a $5 billion unit of Kraft Foods. Before joining General Foods, she spent nine years at General Mills. She serves as chair of the -U.S. Programs Advisory Board of the Gates Foundation, as a trustee of the -Rockefeller Foundation and the Brookings Institution, and as a member of the finance committee of the Harvard Corporation. She also serves on the board of directors of General Electric, -Novartis, Unilever, and Infosys.

She serves on so many boards, etc. that she and other CRF peeps must be raking it in... and as for Pharma: She "serves" on the board of Novartis, one of the largest, if not largest, parma companies in the world.

The members and former members are directors and board members on charities, foundations, companies, etc. that intermix and overlap in some cases. They are into everything. Food, drugs, energy, finance, more

Look into how few corporations essentially control a majority of the worlds economy.

One example is that 10 companies control the entire food and beverage market (yes, just about anything and everything you eat and drink) which grosses about 8 trillion dollars a year worldwide.

I still think the CFR is still key or a keystone that binds and supports a lot of these bad actors. Look at their members and their companies… food, pharma, treasury, banks, Clinton pals, transportation, tech. Worth looking at if you have not.
