8 dead, numerous injured at Astroworld Festival in Houston
HOUSTON (AP) - At least eight people died and numerous others were injured in what officials described as a surge of the crowd at the Astroworld music festival in Houston while rapper travis scott was performing.
Officials declared a "mass casualty incident" just after 9 p.m. Friday during the festival where an estimated 50,000 people were in attendance, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pe?a told reporters at a news conference.
"The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and it started causing some injuries," the fire chief said. "People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic."
The show was called off shortly thereafter. The fire chief said "scores of individuals" were injured.
Officials transported 17 people to hospitals, including 11 who were in cardiac arrest, Pe?a said. It wasn't clear whether all eight who died were among the 17 that had been transported to hospitals. Many people were also treated at the scene at NRG Park, where a field hospital had been set up. About 300 people were examined at that site throughout the day, he said.
Astroworld is a two-day music festival that was scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday in Houston. The event was sold out, according to the Astroworld website. Saturday's performances have been canceled.
The deaths called to mind a 1979 concert for The Who where 11 people died and about two dozen were injured as thousands of fans tried to get into Cincinnati's riverfront coliseum.
scott, one of music's biggest young stars, released two new songs earlier Friday, "Mafia" and "Escape Plan." The 29-year-old Houston native has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards. He has a 3-year-old daughter, Stormi, with Kylie Jenner, who announced in September that she's pregnant with their second child.
Drake joined scott on-stage at the concert - which was livestreamed by Apple Music - and posted photos to Instagram after the performance.
Event promoters had arranged for medical units to be on scene at the festival, however once the crowd surge began, those units were "quickly overwhelmed," Pe?a said.
In a video posted to social media, scott could be seen stopping the concert at one point and asking for aid for someone in the audience: "Security, somebody help real quick."
Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite was near the front of the crowd and said it seemed the surge "happened all at once."
"Suddenly we had several people down on the ground, experiencing some type of cardiac arrest or some type of medical episode," Satterwhite said. "And so we immediately started doing CPR, and moving people right then, and that's when I went and met with the promoters, and Live Nation, and they agreed to end early in the interest of public safety."
Pe?a said officials did not immediately know the causes of death for the eight people who died. A medical examiner would investigate. The deceased had not been identified as of early Saturday.
Officials set up a reunification center at a hotel for family members who had not been able to reach relatives who had been in attendance at the event. Authorities were looking to connect families with festivalgoers who were transported to the hospital, "some as young as 10" years old, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner called for calm and urged people not to jump to conclusions as to what caused the surge.
"I think it's very important that none of us speculate. Nobody has all the answers tonight," Finner said. He added that there have been several rumors surrounding the event that authorities would look into.
"We're going to do an investigation and find out because it's not fair to the producers, to anybody else involved, until we determine what happened, what caused the surge," he said. "We don't know, but we will find out."
The Associated Press reached out to a representative for scott but did not immediately hear back.
Finner told reporters that scott and the event promoters cooperated with police.
scott founded Astroworld Festival in 2018 and it has taken place at the former site of Six Flags AstroWorld each year since, except for in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Other music events where there have been multiple fatalities in recent years include the Las Vegas massacre in 2017 when 58 people were killed at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, the so-called Ghost Ship fire in 2016 that killed 36 people in California and the 2003 Station nightclub fire that killed 100 people in Rhode Island.

Eight people were killed and several more injured in a stampede during a sold-out hip-hop music festival in Houston, Texas, the fire department said.
Ambulances and firefighters were called in after multiple injuries were reported on the opening night of the Astroworld Music Festival.
"We have eight confirmed fatalities at this point," Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena told reporters, adding that overall, 23 people were transported from the scene.
"The crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage, and people began to panic," Pena said.
A video on social media shows paramedics performing CPR on several people who are lying on the ground outside the stage, as loud music continues to play in the background.
Security issues were a matter of concern even before the event had begun. Local media reported that multiple people were trampled after hundreds stormed into NRG Stadium, pushing back security barricades.
An ABC13 reporter filmed fans breaching the perimeter before the concert began and tearing down metal detectors.
Another video claims to show a group of fans trying to get in by climbing over a fence
ABC13 said the festival's 100,000 tickets sold out within an hour of going on sale in May. The Houston Chronicle said that around 50,000 fans showed up for the two-day event.
The event's lineup included hip hop stars travis scott, Young Thug, Lil Baby, SZA, and a surprise appearance by Drake, among others.

The exchange began when Bennett tweeted that she was happy to be blocked by the rapper, who made headlines this week for Satanic sneakers containing human blood and a music video in which he gives Satan a lap dance.
Things escalated quickly from there, as Lil Nas tweeted "i still see ur tweets shitty pants," referring to a cruel internet meme in which "feminists" on the left have spread a photo of a half naked girl that had an... accident... and claimed that it is Bennett. Yes, you read that correctly, the same group that claims to defend and believe women has used revenge porn of some unknown girl passed out at a party to shame Bennett for her politics.
Not one to back down from a fight, Bennett fired back saying "the guy that takes it up the ass from Satan wants to talk about 'shitty pants?'"
Bennett followed up by asking the rapper if he still sees his dad.
"Lil Nas just threatened to rape my dad. Sounds about what I'd expect," Bennett tweeted with a screenshot.
Just a couple of months before going full on Satanic - and now threatening to rape people's fathers, Lil Nas was celebrating the fact that his fan base is mostly children during an interview with NPR.
Lil Nas recently wrote a children's book he wrote called "C is For Country," apparently based off his hit song "Old Town Road."
That wasn't the musician's only attempt at making sure he had a young fan base.
In January, NPR reported in an article titled "Lil Nas X Says Children Are His Core Audience Right Now, And That's OK," "Reaching kids on their level has been a big part of the public persona of Lil Nas X in the past year. Last spring he did an appearance on The Not-Too-Late Show, singing the theme along with its host, Elmo. Leading into the holidays, he did a virtual performance on the online video game platform Roblox, reminiscent of the travis scott Fortnite concert in April. But Roblox has a huge younger audience - the company says over half its users are under 13 - and the Lil Nas X concert alone drew in over 30 million visits."

Thanks to Donald Trump's leadership skills, millions of American seniors will soon receive $200 cards in the mail to help them cover the cost of prescription drugs.
The president announced the initiative on Thursday at an event with health professionals in North Carolina. "Under my plan, 33 million Medicare beneficiaries will soon receive a card in the mail containing $200 that they can use to help pay for prescription drugs," Trump told the cheering heroes. "Joe Biden won't be doing this."

Unlike Trump, the former vice president has neither a plan nor the authority to provide financial relief to seniors before the end of the year. Biden, who has been largely absent from the campaign trail of late, recently told reporters he intended to focus "really heavily" on preparing for next week's presidential debate in Cleveland.
It is merely the latest example of the so-called "leadership gap" between President Trump and his Democratic rival. Earlier this month, Trump forged a historic peace agreement between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. He also helped bring back Big Ten college football, and presided over the celebrated "Cactus Jack" collaboration between McDonald's and hip-hop artist travis scott.
Biden, by comparison, was engaged in activities that aren't typically associated with leadership. He committed an embarrassing gaffe by reading aloud the phrase "end of quote" during a teleprompter-assisted speech, spoke incoherently about what it would be like to work "in the second-floor ladies department," and attempted to woo Hispanic voters by playing the 2017 smash hit "Despacito" on his phone. Biden was also attacked by bugs during an "environmental justice" event.
Biden is going to need all the preparation he can get ahead of next week's debate. He has consistently struggled to form coherent sentences on the campaign trail, and has displayed an inability to control his emotions when challenged. His failed attempt to recite the pledge of allegiance, for example, does not bode well. Maroon 5 frontman hints Superbowl show will be hip-hop kneeling fest. Fox News offers alternative for halftime.
Proud, flag-loving patriots who hate seeing the American flag be disrespected may have no other option but to tune out of the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show.
The show has been mired in controversy because of a concerted effort by radical far-left activists to stop any artist from performing at the event. To them, any performance would be a slap in the face to unemployed former NFL quarterback and continued race-baiting agitator Colin Kaepernick.
Thankfully, some artists resisted the pressure and signed up for the gig anyway, including the pop rock band Maroon 5 and rappers Big Boi and travis scott, among others. But judging by the rhetoric of Maroon 5's lead singer, Adam Levine, trouble may still be expected.
How so? During an interview this week with Entertainment Tonight, Levine said that the band plans to honor those who believe in the concept of so-called "social justice."
"They will be [heard] - that's all I want to say because I don't want to spoil anything," he said, referring to those who've been complaining about the band's participation in the show.
"And once again, I like to think that people know where I stand as a human being after two decades doing this. I'm not a speaker. I'm not a public speaker. I do speak, but it's through the music. My life's work and what I put out into the universe has been positive and hopefully inspiring."
The singer also admitted that the decision to participate in the show hadn't been made with ease
"No one thought about it more than I did," he said. "No one put more thought and love into this than I did. ... I spoke to many people. Most importantly though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt."
It's unclear why deciding to perform at one of the most-viewed events of the year caused him such consternation. While it's true far-left activists have been complaining, who cares? Who are a bunch of radical nut jobs to decide who gets to perform at the Super Bowl!?
And regarding the rap musicians Maroon 5 is slated to perform with, Levine enthusiastically said, "We love having there be a presence that this is the the show that's gonna have
the biggest hip hop presence that there has ever been on the show."
Given his soft stance toward the left-wing mob, chances are he and his band mates may kneel during their halftime performance. In fact, that's exactly what Roger Waters, the co-founder of the rock band Pink Floyd, has asked all of the event's performers to do.
"My colleagues Maroon 5, travis scott, and Big Boi are performing during the halftime show at the Super Bowl this coming Sunday," he said in a statement published to Facebook Wednesday.
"I call upon them to 'take a knee' on stage in full sight. I call upon them to do it in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, to do it for every child shot to death on these mean streets, to do it for every bereaved mother and father and brother and sister."
The majority of suspects killed by the police are done so justifiably, but never mind the facts ...

According to insider sources, the top-rated news purveyor will be hosting a one-hour special during the halftime show Feb. 3 about Fox Nation, the network's new streaming service.
Hosted by Fox Nation's newest host, "Abby Hornacek," the special will "take viewers behind the scenes of FOX Nation, spotlighting the platform's most popular shows, offering a sneak peek of upcoming new series and previewing exclusive content set to launch in the coming month."
It'll also feature guest appearances by FNC host Brian Kilmeade, FNC reporter Eric Shawn, Fox News Radio host Tom Shillue and conservative commentators Katie Pavlich and Diamond & Silk.
