Jack Sherman, one-time guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers who played on the band's debut album, has died at the age of 64, the band confirmed Friday. No cause of death was provided.

"We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed," the band wrote on Instagram. "Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA. He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform."

Sherman's tenure in Red Hot Chili Peppers lasted just over one year beginning in December 1983, with the guitarist - who replaced founding member Hillel slovak - playing on the band's self-titled debut album. Sherman also co-wrote much of the material on the band's second LP Freaky Styley, but when slovak rejoined in early 1985 prior to recording that album, the Chili Peppers - amid rising tensions - parted ways with Sherman.

Over the course of the 1980s, Maxwell's media empire encompassed 125 countries. He was known as a major publisher in Britain and held second place in the United States. Aside from newspapers, magazines and books, he had a stake in radio stations and television channels (MTV, for example). Competitors called him "Hurricane Bob," and intelligence services - Captain Bob.

This enormous media empire became a cover for Captain Bob's espionage mission. It was a secret operation by Mossad, CIA and MI6. The objective - infiltrate a mole into the Kremlin. Chinese FM: Political manipulation over virus origin is futile

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday that tracing the origin of the COVID-19 virus should be put in the hands of experts, whose research shall be carried out globally without disturbance from political factors.

Any political manipulation on this scientific matter is futile, he added.
Wang made the remarks in a phone conversation with slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Ivan Korcok, lauding the prioritization of developing China-slovakia relations by the new slovak government.

China first reported the epidemic outbreak to the World Health Organization (WHO), which reflected China's responsible attitude. Still, the earliest report does not mean the virus originated from China, Wang stressed.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, China has provided urgent medical supplies and assistance to over 150 countries and international organizations, he said, noting that this kind of help has no political strings attached and zero geopolitical considerations.

Justice and truth speak for themselves; facts will eventually defeat lies, he said.

The slovak foreign minister said China and slovakia have traditional friendship and possess huge cooperation potential. The new slovak government will always pursue the one-China policy and make the development of a friendly relationship with China and the deepening of bilateral cooperation a priority of its foreign policy.

Korcok said as a member of the European Union, slovakia unswervingly supports multilateralism, views China as an important cooperative partner on the international stage, and is prepared to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China on global matters.

He agreed with Wang that tracing the origin of the virus is a scientific matter which should be resorted to by experts.

Mongolia to send 30,000 sheep to China

Wang also had a phone conversation with Mongolian Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar on Wednesday.

Mongolian President Khaltmaa Battulga, the first foreign head of state who visited China after the coronavirus outbreak, demonstrated his support for China with practical actions, Wang said. Battulga's offer of 30,000 sheep on behalf of the Mongolian people has generated a warm response among the Chinese people, and enhanced the traditional friendship between the two sides, he said.

Noting that solidarity, cooperation, and determination are in need at this time, Wang said any words and deeds that run counter to them are inappropriate, and attempts to politicize the epidemic and label the virus are unacceptable.

Tsogtbaatar said that China has taken timely and effective prevention and control measures to contain the epidemic in a short period of time, which demonstrates its strong mobilization capabilities and medical science and technology.

Recalling the Mongolian president's visit to China in February, Tsogtbaatar said with joint efforts, Mongolia and China have registered no infections from the other side.

Mongolia is ready to strengthen coordination with China and realize its promise of sending 30,000 sheep to the Chinese people, said the Mongolian minister.

The Antarctic Treaty

The 12 nations listed in the preamble (below) signed the Antarctic Treaty on 1 December 1959 at Washington, D.C. The Treaty entered into force on 23 June 1961; the 12 signatories became the original 12 consultative nations.

As of April 2010, 17 additional nations (Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, and Uruguay) have achieved consultative status by acceding to the Treaty and by conducting substantial scientific research in Antarctica. Russia carries forward the signatory privileges and responsibilities established by the former Soviet Union.

Another 21 nations have acceded to the Antarctic Treaty: Austria, Belarus, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Malaysia, Monaco, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Romania, slovak Republic, Switzerland, Turkey, and Venezuela. These nations agree to abide by the treaty and may attend consultative meetings as observers.

The 50 Antarctic Treaty nations represent about two-thirds of the world's human population.

The Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington on 1 December 1959 by the twelve countries whose scientists had been active in and around Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957-58. Russian President Vladimir Putin's apparent mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic could allow "a potential new leader of Russia" to rival the Kremlin strongman, according to one of President Trump's top former advisers. "I think power is certainly going to shift really away from him to others," Retired Army Gen. H.R. McMaster said during a Hoover Institution event. McMaster, the president's second White House national security adviser, oversaw the development of the 2017 National Security Strategy that highlighted Russia's attempts "to weaken U.S. influence in the world and divide us from our allies and partners." The coronavirus emerged at an inconvenient time for those efforts because it interrupted some of Putin's plans to consolidate power at a time when he is already beset by falling oil prices and a struggling economy. "It has a very interesting historical parallel because the Soviet Union started to tremble - it had a lot of weakness - when oil prices collapsed," a Baltic official told the Washington Examiner in response to McMaster's comments. "So, from an historical perspective, it might be right."

Putin began the year intending for these spring months to feature a sustained campaign to burnish his political image and eliminate impediments to his rule. He scheduled a referendum for Wednesday that was designed to ratify a plan to amend the constitution so that he could remain in power until 2036, a vote that was to have been followed by a high-profile annual celebration of victory in World War II. Instead, both events were delayed due to the coronavirus, and Putin disappeared from public view rather than fill the void left by their absence with new programming. "All of a sudden, all his efforts to solidify power were overshadowed by the COVID-19 outbreak," Alisa Muzergues, a foreign policy analyst at GLOBSEC in the slovak Republic, told the Washington Examiner. "The prices for oil, which is the backbone of the Russian already shattered economy, collapsed. And the myth of his strong image, which he and his entourage have been so carefully working on and projecting both inside and outside Russia, could be ruined." His absence created the space, and the necessity, for local officials to act independently of the Kremlin.

"When Putin was away, hiding in his own dacha, local governors took a lot of control fighting pandemic, so people trust more than before local governments," the Baltic official said. "In Russia, it's a big thing when you are starting your own initiatives without the czar." Putin has gripped the top of the Kremlin's greasy pole for more than 20 years, in part because his prospective rivals tend to find themselves marginalized or even murdered before they can mount a serious challenge. "Putin was very clever, he kind of either killed or bought all the potential competitors and political opponents," the Baltic official continued. "The ones that he couldn't buy or couldn't subdue, he either killed or put in jail." Yet Putin needs the regional governors and local officials to succeed in containing the outbreak, analysts agree, in order to avoid popular anger spreading alongside the contagion. "The ruble has crashed to four-year lows, the Russian Central Bank warned the economy could shrink by 6 percent this year," Muzergues wrote in an email. "In reality, the situation can get much worse, and it will be especially felt in the regions, which might become the epicenters of the expression of discontent." "Putin managed to outlive crises before, but this combination of challenges and constantly growing discontent in Russian society might become fatal for his governance,". she added in an email.

Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, and slovakia pledge to help Greece deal with border crisis

KASTANIES, Greece (AP) - Greek authorities fired tear gas and stun grenades Wednesday morning to repulse a push by migrants to cross its land border from Turkey, as pressure continued along its frontier after Turkey said its own border with Europe was open to whoever wanted to cross.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and slovakia pledged to help Greece to deal with pressure along its border.

Speaking after meeting his counterparts from the other three countries, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said the situation was serious and the EU must protect its borders.

"We're ready to help," Babis said.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said his country was ready to deploy guards at the Greek-Turkish border, while his slovak counterpart Peter Pellegrini said the growing number of migrants "poses a security threat not just for Greece."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that there are some 130,000 migrants on the move that the EU has to stop on its borders, and that "Hungary will take an active role in doing so."

The four countries have been known for their tough stance against migrants and rejected an EU plan to redistribute refugees in member states.

Meanwhile, European Council head Charles Michel was meeting with Erdogan in Ankara Wednesday, while EU Vice President Josep Borrell and Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic were holding talks with Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Erdogan, Borell said that the EU delegation asked Turkey "not to encourage the further movement of refugees and migrants toward the EU borders."

"We had the opportunity to express our understanding of the difficult situation Turkey is currently facing but also stressed that the current developments at the European borders is not leading to any solution," he said.

Borell also told reporters that Turkish officials' response was that Turkey was not encouraging people to move but that "they cannot prevent people from doing so."

Greek authorities said there were about 15,000 people along the Greek-Turkish land border on Wednesday. They said that between Saturday morning and Wednesday morning, they had blocked 27,832 attempts to cross the border, and had arrested a total of 220 people who managed to cross.

Ankara has come under harsh criticism from some European countries.

"The people are being used by President Erdogan as a political football, as weapons and as instruments of pressure on the European Union," Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said Tuesday.

Sen. Rubio Urges National Security Review of Deal Between AT&T and Czech Firm, Citing China Concerns



A U.S. senator has requested the government review AT&T's upcoming sale of its stake in a European media company to a Czech investment firm, over the Czech company's links to the Chinese communist regime.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), in a Feb. 26 letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Attorney General William Barr, urged a review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to consider the national security implications of AT&T's pending $1.1 billion sale to PPF Group of its stake in Central European Media Enterprises (CME Group). The sale was announced last November.

CFIUS, which sits under the Treasury Department, reviews mergers, acquisitions, and stock purchases to ensure they don't harm U.S. national security.

Rubio said in the letter that PPF Group and its CEO Petr Kellner "have a record of acting as China's proxies inside the Czech Republic."

The claim was based on revelations made by Czech daily Aktualne.cz that PPF funded a public relations firm to improve the Chinese regime's image among Czech media, politicians, and the public.

"This work included spying on Czech politicians, pressuring media to withdraw news articles critical of China, and creating a new think-tank, Sinoskop, to employ biased analysts to influence public debate," Rubio wrote.

He noted that about a third of PPF's profits come from its subsidiary Home Credit, an individual lending business in China. According to business publication Ekonom, PPF earned more than 2 billion euros (about $2.2 billion) in China in 2017.

As a result, "Mr. Kellner and his companies have supported China's malign activities abroad," Rubio wrote.

"It has come to my attention that PPF has already used its expected acquisition of CME's Czech media outlets to intimidate Czech media and politicians into silence," he said.

CME has 30 channels that reach about 45 million viewers across five countries: the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, slovak Republic, and Slovenia.

The senator said the United States has an "interest in preserving a free and open media environment overseas as well as preventing the Chinese Communist Party from subverting these platforms in its efforts to undermine democratic norms worldwide."

The Justice Department and Treasury Department did not immediately return The Epoch Times' request for comment.

The Chinese regime has ramped up efforts in recent years to influence public perceptions abroad through its state-run media and by directly or indirectly injecting its propaganda and narrative into foreign media outlets.

On September 4, 1918, United States troops land at Archangel, in northern Russia. The landing was part of an Allied intervention in the civil war raging in that country after revolution in 1917 led to the abdication of Czar Nicholas II in favor of a provisional government; the seizure of power by Vladimir Lenin and his radical socialist Bolshevik Party; and, finally, Russia's withdrawal from participation alongside the Allies in World War I.

A document issued by the U.S. State Department in July 1918 set the terms by which the U.S. would participate alongside the other Allied powers in the so-called "interventions" in Russia: three infantry battalions and three companies of army engineers would be sent to Archangel to join the British troops already there. A small force would also be sent to Vladivostok, where a force of Czecho-slovak troops bent on continuing the fight against the Central Powers had claimed the Russian city as an Allied protectorate early in July. According to the State Department, Allied responsibilities in Russia were clear: "...Each of the associated powers has the single object of affording such aid as shall be acceptable, and only such aid as shall be acceptable, to the Russian people in their endeavor to regain control of their own affairs, their own territory, and their own destiny."

'Cutting each other's throats': Allies fear Russia will annex Belarus to save Putin's life

Western allies fear that Russia will gain sovereignty over Belarus, a former Soviet satellite state that could help preserve Vladimir Putin's grip on power and sharpen Kremlin threats against NATO members. Russian expansion is on the table because Putin is trying to finalize the implementation of a union treaty that the two countries signed in 1998. Moscow and Minsk interpret the agreement differently, but Putin has begun to apply economic pressure to Belarus while scheduling a flurry of meetings with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko over the last year. "I think this mild annexation will just happen, probably next year," Alisa Muzergues, a foreign policy analyst at GLOBSEC in the slovak Republic, told the Washington Examiner. "To be honest, my personal feeling is that it's already a done deal."

Such a maneuver could end Lukashenko's tenure as "the last dictator in Europe," while providing Putin with a political life-preserver. Currently, presidential term limit laws require him to leave the Kremlin in 2024. A union with Belarus would allow him to circumvent those limits and continue to rule the revised Russian state, pending a new election he is expected to win. The prospective agreement is widely regarded as a way to provide a new legal basis for Putin to remain in power, sources told the Washington Examiner. The stakes for Putin are high. "The Kremlin is not monolithic, there are many factions,"a Baltic official told the Washington Examiner. "Right now, Putin is the force which keeps them from cutting each other's throats, but if he leaves power he understands that he himself becomes vulnerable."

The prospect of a Russian expansion has caused open anxiety among NATO allies, including in Lithuania, a Baltic Sea neighbor that joined the transatlantic alliance in 2004. "During the last year, Russia's pressure towards Belarus to implement the obligations under the Agreement on Establishment of the Union State of Belarus and Russia increased," Lithuania's Foreign Ministry told the Washington Examiner, referring to an ambiguous union agreement that the two sides signed in 1998. "It is a sovereign choice of Belarus with whom and how to integrate. However, independent, sovereign Belarus is our national interest." Lukashenko has balked at what he calls Putin's demand that he "bury the sovereignty and independence" of Belarus. He has avoided signing an agreement, but the two leaders have met twice in the first three weeks of December. "Overall, since the Soviet Union collapse we have not drifted apart too much from each other," Lukashenko said following a Friday meeting with Putin in St. Petersburg. "Even though we did not enact the points envisaged there, we did not stray away from each other either as it happened with Russia and other republics in the post-Soviet space and not only the Baltic states or Ukraine."

Hundreds of activists risked the wrath of Lukashenko's security services to protest against integration with Russia during both of his meetings with Putin, including a Friday gathering of 1,500 people who warned that "Union with Russia means War and Poverty." An unknown street artist lampooned the meeting with graffiti of Putin and Lukashenko kissing, to the delight of Belarusian nationalists. "Lukashenko signed most of the agreements with Putin," Franak Via?orka, a prominent local journalist, tweeted. "It seems 2020 will be the critical year for Belarus' future and independence. And these protests are not the last."

Lithuania's acknowledgement that Vilnius is "closely monitoring" the possibility that Russia will absorb Belarus reflects the concern that a merger would fortify Putin's political and military power within quick striking distance of a vulnerable part of the NATO alliance. "Baltic states are in between Kaliningrad and Belarus, and that also is probably the weakest link in NATO," the Baltic official said. "Belarus is very far to the west, so Russians can use it to project power." Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave that Moscow has controlled since the Cold War, even though the territory does not connect by land to Russia. The district, stocked with Russian military assets, is surrounded by Poland and Lithuania, but the Polish-Lithuanian border creates only a small buffer of NATO territory between Kaliningrad and Belarus. "In that 50 miles, they're cutting off the three Baltic states from the territory of NATO," the Baltic official said, while discussing the possibility that Putin might try to connect Belarus with Kalinigrad.

On 7 July 1991, during a third visit to Yugoslavia by European Community (EC) representatives, a Cease Fire Agreement was negotiated between Slovenia and the remaining Yugoslav Republic. The Agreement, known as the Brioni Accord, established a cooling-off period of three months, while Federal (JNA) troops were to return to their barracks, and local Slovenian militia were deactivated. It also called for observers to monitor the ceasefire agreement and the withdrawal of JNA forces from Slovenia. With this agreement, the European Community Monitoring Mission (ECMM) was established.

The staff of the ECMM was recruited from twelve EC countries as well as some member countries of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) (Canada, Sweden, Poland, slovak Republic and Czech Republic). On 15 July 1991, the first twenty EC Monitors arrived in Slovenia and by 1994 the mission had grown to approximately 160 monitors, or monitor equivalent positions. By then the mission was operating from seven Regional Centers (RC): Zagreb, Knin, Zenica, Belgrade, Szeged (Hungary), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Tirana (Albania).

Dressed completely in white and driving unmarked white vehicles, each monitor team consisted of two monitors, a driver, and a translator. Their role was to collect information about the military situation in their area of responsibility; facilitate contacts between the different factions and participate in negotiations; work with humanitarian organizations, to monitor the human rights situation; and report violations of the no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

European Deep Pockets Are Preparing For New Big War

Large financiers and central banks are preparing for a new global economic crisis and a possible global war.

On November 29th, Bloomberg reported that "Gold is the new obsession of East Europe's nationalist leaders."

"Just this week, Poland's government touted its economic might after completing the repatriation of 100 tons of the metal. Over in Hungary, anti-immigrant Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been ramping up holdings of the safe-haven asset to boost the security of his reserves.

The gold rush mirrors steps by Russia and China to diversify reserves exceeding $3 trillion away from the dollar amid flaring geopolitical tensions with the U.S. Motivations in Europe's ex-communist wing, however, can vary."

Former slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico urged parliament to vote for the central bank to return the country's gold reserves from the UK.

"You can hardly trust even the closest allies after the Munich Agreement," Fico told reporters. "I guarantee that if something happens, we won't see a single gram of this gold. Let's do it as quickly as possible."

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic ordered the central bank to boost reserves and prompted the purchase of nine tons of gold in October.

While Russia began to actively build up gold in its reserves, the Netherlands organized the export of 122 tons of gold from London, and the Netherlands isn't an Eastern European country.

Financial Times, published an article in which Rana Foroohar, a columnist who is known for her skepticism about gold, admits that even she is starting to get intimidated by the intensity with which interest in gold is rising:

"Gold bugs have always struck me as paranoid. You have to really believe the sky is falling in order to hoard physical bars in a digital age. So, it's rather worrying that some investors and central bankers are talking up gold."

Recently, billionaire financier Ray Dalio explained that the dollar and, accordingly, dollar debt obligations may depreciate due to the US budget policy and the actions of the US Federal Reserve and that in this context it is worth remembering the old financial saying.

"Gold is the only asset that you can have and which it will not be someone's debt obligation."

Bratislava, November 28 (TASR) - The investment gold that slovakia has stored at the Bank of England should return to slovakia, Smer-SD party head Robert Fico stated on Thursday.

The gold, weighing 31.7 tonnes, is worth approximately ?1.3 billion. The bill that will serve as a request to initiate this process should by presented by 30 MPs at an extraordinary session.

According to Fico, the reason behind the decision is an impending financial crisis as well as the instability stemming from Brexit. At the same time, Fico noted that the rate of return from the British bank is very low.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed on Friday the possibility of a new accord limiting nuclear arms that could eventually include China in what would be a major deal between the globe's top three atomic powers.

Trump, speaking to reporters as he met in the Oval Office with Peter Pellegrini, prime minister of the slovak Republic, also said he and Putin discussed efforts to persuade North Korea to give up nuclear weapons, the political discord in Venezuela, and Ukraine during a call that stretched over an hour.

The 2011 New START treaty, the only U.S.-Russia arms control pact limiting deployed strategic nuclear weapons, expires in February 2021 but can be extended for five years if both sides agree. Without the agreement, it could be harder to gauge each other's intentions, arms control advocates say.

Trump cited the expense of keeping up the U.S. nuclear arsenal as a motivating factor behind wanting to limit how many weapons are deployed.

"We're talking about a nuclear agreement where we make less and they make less and maybe where we get rid of some of the tremendous firepower that we have right now," he said.

Trump said China during trade talks had "felt very strongly" about joining the United States and Russia in limiting nuclear weapons.

"So I think we're going to probably start up something very shortly between Russia and ourselves maybe to start off, and I think China will be added down the road. We'll be talking about nonproliferation, we'll be talking about a nuclear deal of some kind, and I think it'll be a very comprehensive one," he said.

The New START treaty required the United States and Russia to cut their deployed strategic nuclear warheads to no more than 1,550, the lowest level in decades, and limit delivery systems - land- and submarine-based missiles and nuclear-capable bombers.

Russia to Conduct Observation Flight Over US This Week

Russia will conduct an observation flight over the United States under the Open Skies Treaty on March 25-30, a newspaper affiliated with the Russian Defence Ministry reported Monday.

"From March 25 to 30, a Russian group of inspectors plans to conduct an observation flight on a Russian Tu-154M LK-1 plane over the United States. The upcoming flight will start at the Open Skies Treaty airfield of Great Falls and have a maximum range of 5,130km (3,188 miles)," the Krasnaya Zvesda (Red Star) newspaper said.

During the same period, a slovak-Polish team of experts will conduct an observation flight on a Ukrainian plane over Russia and Belarus, while Russian and Belarusian observers fly over Poland. The maximum range of the flight will be 1,400 kilometres.

Earlier, the acting head of the Russian Defence Ministry's National Nuclear Risk Reduction Centre, Ruslan Shishin, said that another observation flight over the territory of Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg (Benelux) was scheduled under the Treaty on Open Skies on March 11-15.

Great Britain should present evidence proving Moscow's involvement in the poisoning of former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal before bringing charges, Chairman of the slovak Parliament's Defense and Security Committee Anton Hrnko said at a meeting with Head of the Russian Federation Council (upper house of parliament) Defense and Security Committee Viktor Bondarev on Friday.

European countries expel Russian diplomats over ex-spy's poisoning
earlier recalled its ambassador to Russia for consultations on the Skripal case but refrained from expelling Russian diplomats.

"The use of chemical weapons is a very serious matter," Hrnko said. "If there is no evidence, no one can act as a judge, we can only do that when we know for sure what happened there," he added. According to the senior slovak lawmaker, this is the reason why Bratislava decided not to expel Russian diplomats. "slovakia will stick to this position," he noted.

Bondarev, in turn, said that slovakia was one of the countries who had refused to expel Russian diplomats in solidarity with Great Britain in the Skripal case. He also noted that "despite the current tensions between Russia and the European Union, Moscow and Bratislava have managed to maintain partnership, high-level political dialogue and active cooperation in trade, economy and other areas."

"Although the slovak government followed Brussels' lead and supported sanctions on Russia, it has been making statements criticizing this kind of pressure on Moscow," the Russian senator added.

Skripal incident
On March 4, 66-year-old Sergei Skripal, who had been convicted in Russia of spying for Great Britain and later swapped for Russian intelligence officers, and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia suffered the effects of an alleged nerve agent in the British city of Salisbury. Claiming that the substance used in the attack had been a Novichok-class nerve agent developed in the Soviet Union, London rushed to accuse Russia of being involved in the incident. Moscow rejected all of the United Kingdom's accusations, saying that a program aimed at developing such a substance had existed neither in the Soviet Union nor in Russia.

- Sarah Auffret, a French-British national living in Tromsoe, northern Norway, was on the plane, the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators said. Auffret, a staffer, was on the way to Nairobi to talk about a Cleans Seas project in connection with the U.N. Environment Assembly this week, the company said in a statement.

Father Adrian described her as a "very soft and loving" woman whose "work was not a job - it was her vocation".

"Everybody was very proud of her and the work she did. We're still in a state of shock. Joanna was genuinely one of those people who you never heard a bad word about," he told the DevonLive website.

He also said she used to keep homing pigeons and pet rats and travelled to the remote Faroe Islands to prevent whaling.

Manuel Barange, the director of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations fisheries and aquaculture department, tweeted saying he was "profoundly sad and lost for words" over the death of the "wonderful human being".

- Joseph Waithaka, a 55-year-old who lived in Hull for a decade before moving back to his native Kenya, also died in the crash, his son told the Hull Daily Mail.

Ben Kuria, who lives in London, said his father had worked for the Probation Service, adding: "He helped so many people in Hull who had found themselves on the wrong side of the law."

Waithaka had dual Kenyan and British citizenship, the BBC reported.

A Nigerian-born Canadian college professor, author and satirist. They were all among the 157 people from 35 countries who died Sunday morning when an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 jetliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa en route to Nairobi, Kenya. Here are some of their stories.

Kenya: 32 victims

- Hussein Swaleh, the former secretary general of the Football Kenya Federation, was named as being among the dead by Sofapaka Football Club.

He was due to return home on the flight after working as the match commissioner in an African Champions League game in Egypt on Friday.

- Cedric Asiavugwa, a law student at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., was on his way to Nairobi after the death of his fiancee's mother, the university said in a statement.

Asiavugwa, who was in his third year at the law school, was born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya. Before he came to Georgetown, he worked with groups helping refugees in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, the university said.

At Georgetown, Asiavugwa studied international business and economic law.

The university said Asiavugwa's family and friends "remembered him as a kind, compassionate and gentle soul, known for his beautifully warm and infectious smile."

Canada: 18 victims

-Pius Adesanmi, a Nigerian professor with Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, was on his way to a meeting of the African Union's Economic, Social and Cultural Council in Nairobi, John O. Oba, Nigeria's representative to the panel, told The Associated Press.

The author of "Naija No Dey Carry Last," a collection of satirical essays, Adesanmi had degrees from Ilorin and Ibadan universities in Nigeria, and the University of British Columbia. He was director of Carleton's Institute of African Studies, according to the university's website. He was also a former assistant professor of comparative literature at Pennsylvania State University.

"Pius was a towering figure in African and post-colonial scholarship and his sudden loss is a tragedy," said Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Carleton's president and vice chancellor.

Adesanmi was the winner of the inaugural Penguin Prize for African non-fiction writing in 2010.

Mitchell Dick, a Carleton student who is finishing up a communications honors degree, said he took a first- and second-year African literature course with Adesanmi.

Adesanmi was "extremely nice and approachable," and stood out for his passion for the subject matter, Dick said.

-Mohamed Hassan Ali confirmed that he had lost his sister and niece.

Ali said his sister, Amina Ibrahim Odowaa, and her five-year-old daughter, Safiya, were on board the jet that went down six minutes after it took off from the Addis Ababa airport on the way to Nairobi, Kenya.

?(She was) a very nice person, very outgoing, very friendly. Had a lot of friends," he said of his sister, who lived in Edmonton and was travelling to Kenya to visit with relatives.

The 33-year-old Edmonton woman and her five year-old daughter were travelling to Kenya to visit with relatives.

A family friend said Odowaa has lived in Edmonton since 2006.

- Derick Lwugi, an accountant with the City of Calgary, was also among the victims, his wife, Gladys Kivia, said. He leaves behind three children, aged 17, 19 and 20, Kivia said.

The couple had been in Calgary for 12 years, and Lwugi had been headed to Kenya to visit both of their parents.

Ethiopia: 9 victims

- The aid group Save the Children said an Ethiopian colleague died in the crash.

Tamirat Mulu Demessie had been a child protection in emergencies technical adviser and "worked tirelessly to ensure that vulnerable children are safe during humanitarian crises," the group said in a statement.

China: 8 victims

-A statement from the Chinese Embassy in Addis Ababa said the Chinese victims included five men and three women, including one person from the semi-autonomous region of Hong Kong.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said two United Nations workers were among the eight Chinese killed. Four were working for a Chinese company and two had travelled to Ethiopia for "private matters."

"It is with immense shock and grief to inform you of the tragic news that Tamarind CEO, Jonathan Seex, was on the ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines flight," the company, which owns and operates several restaurants in Africa, said on Facebook. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, the Tamarind community and all the others who have suffered unfathomable losses."

According to his social media, Seex lived in Nairobi with his wife and children. Before moving to Kenya, he spent two years managing a resort in North Carolina and worked in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, FL.

He was one of three Swedish nationals to die in the crash.

Four slovakians were also on the plane, including the family of politician Anton Hrnko, the vice chairman of the slovak National Party. He wrote on Facebook that his wife, Blanka, son Martin and daughter Michal, had died.

The three Russian nationals on the flight were also identified by their embassy as Ekaterina Polyakova, Alexander Polyakov and Sergey Vyalikov.

The US embassy said they are "working to determine the identities" of the eight Americans killed.

Opposition slovak presidential candidate soars in final poll

BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - Zuzana Caputova, a lawyer and activist who has suddenly emerged as the front-runner in a presidential election in slovakia, opened a seemingly insurmountable lead over the ruling party's candidate in the final opinion poll two weeks before the vote.

A survey by the AKO agency, the last before a two-week moratorium on polls starting on Saturday, showed Caputova with 52.9 percent support. Maros Sefcovic, backed by former Prime Minister Robert Fico's Smer party, placed a distant second at just 16.7 percent.

Sefcovic, a career diplomat, had led in polls until just this week, when another challenger, scientist and entrepreneur Robert Mistrik, pulled out of the race and endorsed Caputova.

Caputova would still face a high hurdle to win the election in a single round, which requires winning the votes of more than 50 percent of all eligible voters, not just of those who turn up. Otherwise, the two top candidates will face each other in a run-off two weeks later.

Support for the three-party governing coalition has collapsed since the murder of investigative reporter Jan Kuciak, who was investigating tax fraud by politically connected businessmen when he was shot dead along with his fiancee a year ago. The killings ignited the biggest protests in slovakia's post-communist history.

Gricar's own family came under suspicion: both his girlfriend and his stepdaughter were asked to take polygraphs by the police, which they both passed.[23] A senior former member of Hell's Angels claimed in 2012 that Gricar was killed by another member of the gang as payback for having previously given him a lengthy prison sentence for aggravated assault. He stated that the body was hidden in a mine shaft, but declined to give a specific location.[citation needed]

The third theory is that he wished to start a new life and therefore engineered his disappearance. Gricar allegedly expressed interest in the case of a Cleveland police chief who had disappeared in order to start a new life. Multiple sightings of Gricar were reported after his disappearance, most notably in a bar in Wilkes-Barre, where both the bartender and an off-duty police officer claimed to have seen Gricar watching a baseball game.[24] It has also been suggested that Gricar may have taken off to Eastern Europe. He was semi-fluent in Russian and fluent in slovak. He had relatives in Slovenia and had made trips to this region of the world in the past.[25]

The Pedophocracy was originally included in Mr. McGowan's book, Programmed to Kill: The Politics of Serial Murder.


The Pedophocracy opens with a review of the Dutroux affair, which I will cover in greater detail in a forthcoming installment. Then it transitions to a survey of pedophile cases that shook several countries, beginning with Latvia. 


Mr. McGowan writes, "As 1999 drew to a close, the nation of Latvia was rocked by a child prostitution / child pornography scandal that reached to the very top of the political power structure." 


"The case first broke in August (1999), when police uncovered a massive operation involving as many as 2,000 severely abused children. When media reports began linking top Latvian officials to the case, a special parliamentary commission was formed to investigate."


The Pedophocracy continues:


"In February 2000, the chairman of the commission delivered a report to Parliament linking the country's Prime Minister, Justice Minister, director of the State Revenue Service, and a number of army and law enforcement officers to the case."


In other words, complicity at the apex of political power in the country. As we will shortly see, this is not singular. It happens repeatedly, and it is often squelched by politically powerful elements. 


Then The Pedophocracy explains:


"The BBC reported in June of 1999 that two unnamed German men had "gone on trial, accused of running a child pornography ring in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic." 


The pair, along with at least eleven identified by unindicted accomplices, "made video recordings of the gang sexually abusing children between the ages of three and 14 since 1993."


"A large but unspecified quantity of "videos, photography, magazines and CD-ROMs containing child pornography were confiscated." 


A potential, but apparently unmistakable connection to the Belgian Dutroux case was noted: "There have been cases of slovak children being taken to Vienna to make pornographic films. The Belgian pedophile Marc Dutroux .... was a regular visitor to one slovak town."


Then The Pedophocracy shifts gears. 


"The BBC also filed a brief report on a 1996 case that went almost completely unreported in the English language press: 


"Mexican police broke up an international child pornography ring based in the resort of Acapulco which they said had at least four thousand clients in the United States....A UN envoy investigating the case said that the "child pornography sometimes involved babies of less than one month old."


The Pedophocracy continues, "In September....of 2000, The Irish Times reported that: "Eight people were arrested in Italy and three in Russia, and police said 1,700 people were being investigated in Italy....The images traded by this ring were "divided into several categories ... The most gruesome, police said, was coded "Necros Pedo," in which children were raped and tortured to death."


The Pedophocracy then explains a possible genesis of "snuff films," before recording: "An account of the Italian case by The Guardian affirmed the existence of snuff films:"


"...police have discovered a massive international pedophile network selling violent child-pornography videos to clients in Italy, the US and Germany ... (authorities are) trying to identify 5,000 people who are suspected of attempting to purchase the videos, some of which appear to contain images of children being tortured and murdered."


The Independent, whose reporting will be frequently cited below, published a follow up in November, 2000, which "confirmed that the seized materials did in fact include child snuff films: "Horrified investigators gathered images of more than 2,000 children who were filmed while being abused, raped, and ... killed." 


"By that time, close to 1,500 people had been charged in the case, but not-as The Guardian noted-"those in high places who are believed to form a "pedophile lobby." 


This "pedophile lobby" was supported by leading politicians and "institutional figures."


The Independent explains:


A "special police squad near Naples set up a fake paedophile website which attracted more than 1,000 subscribers, despite clear warnings about the content." Some 1,500 subscribers, including 831 Italians, were charged with selling or downloading internet child pornography.

The cardinal recalled that after China severed relations with the Vatican in the 1950s, Catholics and other believers were arrested and sent to labor camps. "Today, we have Pope Francis," Zen said. "Naturally optimistic about communism, he is being encouraged to be optimistic about the Communists in China by cynics around him who know better."

In the face of recent experience, the cardinal said he has revised his earlier opinions regarding the pope's choices of aides. "I was among those who applauded Francis's decision to appoint Pietro Parolin as secretary of state in 2013," he said. "But I now think that Cardinal Parolin cares less about the Church than about diplomatic success. His ultimate goal is the restoration of formal relations between the Vatican and Beijing." Zen also likened China to the situation in Cuba, where a Francis visit in 2015 accomplished little besides media hype. "But what did Francis's visit to Cuba in 2015 bring the Church? The Cuban people? Almost nothing. And did he convert the Castro brothers?" Zen asks rhetorically.

What the new accord will actually achieve, Zen warns, is the suppression of the good bishops of the underground Church who are faithful to Rome. "The Vatican's deal, struck in the name of unifying the Church in China, means the annihilation of the real Church in China," he said. Zen said that if he were a cartoonist he would "draw the Holy Father on his knees offering the keys of the kingdom of heaven to President Xi Jinping and saying, 'Please recognize me as the pope.'" The cardinal ends his essay with an appeal to the underground bishops and priests of China, asking them not to start a revolution, which would only mean their ruin. "Go home, and pray with your family," he said. "Till the soil. Wait for better times. Go back to the catacombs. Communism isn't eternal."

The Bulgarian journalist was a presenter and administrative director at TVN, a popular local station, in the northern city of Ruse. According to Mladen Marinov, Bulgarian interior minister, Marinova had been raped and died from asphyxiation and head injuries.

Colleagues at TVN, a private channel, said Marinova, 30, went jogging on Saturday to prepare for a road race.

Hosting the first episode of a show, Lie-Detector, on September 30, the presenter introduced an interview with two reporters from Rise Project, a Romanian group of investigative reporters and activists, and Bivol, a similar Bulgarian organisation, who were probing suspected embezzlement of EU structural funds by local contractors.

The reporters were arrested by Bulgarian police last month while trying to film people connected with the investigation but were freed several hours later following the intervention of Romanian authorities.

The 27-year-old slovakian investigative journalist and his fiancée were found dead at their house in Velka Maca, about 50km east of slovakia's capital, Bratislava, in February. They had both been shot.

Kuciak had worked for the Aktuality.sk news website for three years and had written a number of articles on tax evasion.

Tibor Gaspar, slovakia's police chief, said the "most likely motive" for the killings was related to Kuciak's investigative activities, but he did not provide further details.

Commenting at the time, Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said: "The EU cannot accept that a journalist is killed for doing his job?.?.?.?the European Parliament will not rest until justice is done."

Macron Vows Punishment for States Refusing Third World Migration

Emmanuel Macron has said funding should be withdrawn from pro-sovereignty nations reluctant to hand more power over to Brussels, and that countries which refuse to welcome third world migrants must be thrown out of the Schengen area.

"Europe is not a menu à la carte, it's a political project," the French president declared, speaking at the end of an EU mini-summit on migration in Salzburg Thursday evening.

At a press conference following the meeting of European leaders, Macron acknowledged there was "a crisis and tensions" over the topic but, crying out, "Who generates them?" the former investment banker launched a broadside at nations which reject asylum seekers and those which "refuse to let boats dock on its ports".

Taking aim at the ex-communist Visegrad states, which are reluctant to follow the West down the road of globalist multiculturalism, he lashed out at "the leaders who tell me... '[I] love Europe when it gives me money, when it makes my people prosperous, when it allows my workers to make better a living in neighbouring countries,' but at home, will not take a single migrant, not a single refugee."

"Countries that do not want more Frontex or solidarity [in housing and feeding third world migrants] will leave Schengen. Countries that don't want more Europe will no longer [get access to] structural funds," he told journalists.

Turning the topic to EU Parliament elections, the banking protegé said next year's vote would be "an historic fight [and] an election like no other", as it would determine whether "the political project led by the founding fathers [of the union] ... will prevail".

Macron has previously summarised next year's vote as a battle between pro-sovereignty conservatives and a "progressive" bloc which would impose his vision of a globalist, socially liberal EU superstate, which revolves around "values" and secular "human rights", on the entire continent.

While most of the French leader's ire at Salzburg was aimed at populists, his attack on countries "that do not want more Frontex" encompassed a much larger group at the summit, where Sebastian Kurz told reporters that southern states at the frontline of mass migration to Europe were "reluctant" over plans to massively increase the size and scope of the EU border agency.

The Austrian leader explained that in countries including Greece, Spain and Italy, there is "concern" that handing more power over to Brussels would make it "harder to wave migrants through" to other, richer EU countries.

In an interview on national radio last week, he said: "Because they were unable to persuade Hungary to let migrants in, the plan now is that they will take border protection rights away from us.

"They want no less than to send their mercenaries from Brussels to replace our Hungarians who are defending the border, and working as police and soldiers, whose homeland is important."

Speaking at Salzburg, the populist leader told journalists that the expansion of Frontex was a "nice idea", but said the agency had "never successfully protected a single metre of a border, while we have protected hundreds of kilometres".

"There's no need for them to protect the Hungarian border in our place, not to mention the questions of principle concerning the issue of sovereignty," he said, adding that he had presented at the summit his own proposal which would "resolve this problem" to Austria, which is currently chairing the EU presidency.

Noting that the Hungarian proposal, which would see money marked for Frontex instead sent to help individual nations invest in protecting and strengthening their own external borders, had already been presented to Bulgaria, Orbán said "there are more of us who oppose" the EU plans than for, adding: "The status quo is on our side for now".

This view was also expressed by slovak prime minister Peter Pellegrini and his Czech counterpart Andrej Babi?, the latter of whom said on the subject: "Malta, Italy, Greece, Spain need to be told that they will get more money. They each have their own coast guard, they don't need any Frontex."

"Honestly speaking, it is embarrassing how easily this groundless issue turned into the focus of America's discourse on domestic current affairs."

Lavrov reiterated that Russia has been saying for several years that the US should furnish proof of Russian hackers meddling in the US presidential election. "However, there is nothing," he stressed. "We've been suggesting for more than a year that the Americans should create a bilateral working group on cyber security to discuss and remove mutual concerns linked, in particular, to the influence on electoral processes in both countries. However, Washington is skirting this professional exchange of communication, so maybe they're not ready for a substantial conversation.".

This has occurred to me as well. Have tried various phrasings for vintage pool restorations + Rome. One pool that gives the creeps is the Hearst Castle Roman pool, although the style is way too elaborate, at least in what pics I can find. Anons have found a number of other Strzoks doing searches. They are exceedingly RARE to find and often tied to Russia and to nuclear materials.

We are all searching in the Latin alphabet. As I'm learning Russian, I put the name into Cyrillic and got this "??????".

It translates literally to "Bug."
