Trump Names Successor to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

President Donald Trump intends to nominate Jeffrey Rosen to succeed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, according to the White House.
Trump nominated Rosenstein to serve as the deputy attorney general on Feb. 1, 2017. Since then, Rosenstein has played a key role in pivotal events. He recommended the firing of FBI Director James Comey, appointed special counsel Robert Mueller, and has overseen a broad investigation into leaks of classified information.
Rosen currently serves as the deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT). Prior to that, he supervised more than 400 attorneys as the general counsel at the DOT and served as general counsel and senior policy adviser at the White House Office of Management and Budget.
Attorney General William Barr praised Rosen as "a distinguished lawyer who has served at the highest levels of government and the private sector."
"His years of outstanding legal and management experience make him an excellent choice to succeed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has served the Department of Justice over many years with dedication and distinction," Barr said in a statement.
Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, Rosen's current boss, said he played a critical role in managing a department with over 55,000 employees and an $85 billion budget.

A drone might be your next guard dog.

Sunflower Labs, a San Francisco-based startup, is combining motion detectors, a quadcopter and a phone app into a home security system. The Sunflower system could go on sale in 2020, according to CEO Alex Patchikov, who expects to charge wealthy customers several hundred dollars a month for the peace of mind – and replacement hardware if anything breaks. For comparison, premium security systems can cost more than $100 a month.

Drones for home protection might seem like overkill, especially if you first heard of unmanned aerial vehicles through the armed forces. But Patchikov said Sunflower's technology is actually meant to head off the bunker mentality. In some areas, 99 percent of all home security calls are false alarms, so you probably don't need to freak out when you hear the backyard bushes rustling.

"Our brand is built around dispelling the notion that you need a panic room," Patchikov said during a meeting at his Sunflower-protected home in a suburb south of San Francisco. Sunflower's drone system, he said, will set your mind to ease by confirming it's a possum, not a prowler, in your backyard.

Drones have captured popular attention as they've become commercialized. Farmers monitor crops with drones, real estate agents photograph homes with them and movie makers use them to shoot overhead scenes. Some pests using drones have shut down traffic at major airports, including London's busy Heathrow and Gatwick.

Sunflower, which has 20 employees located in both California and Switzerland and demonstrated its tech at CES this year, isn't the only company to use drones for security. Alarm.com demonstrated some in 2017, and Drone Guarder is taking pre-orders for its products.

"Two-thirds of families in America live in homes suitable for this," Patchikov said, so when costs come down, he expects drone security to be commonplace. "They'll be as common as Ubers in San Francisco. An average home will be able to afford this."

How it works
Sunflower drones are the most obvious part of the company's system, but it actually begins with what look like sidewalk lights – "sunflowers" – that will dot your property. The lights illuminate the ground and are equipped with motion and vibration detectors.

The sunflowers send alerts to a computer in the drone's base station, which Sunflower calls "the Hive." The computer processes the signals to distinguish footfalls from car traffic and other benign sources. The motion sensors can also tell if something is tall and narrow like a human, or short and wide like a dog.

If the base station computer is worried, it sends an alert to an app on your phone. That will let you deploy a drone, which Sunflower calls "the Bee." The base station cover opens and the drone heads out, piloting itself automatically around obstacles and staying about 20 feet in the air as it heads to the trouble spot. You can watch the video live on your phone.

There's no direct connection to the police, but Sunflower Labs' setup can pull together a data package if you need to file a report. Patchikov says the startup could use others' computing interfaces to automate reports in the future.

Plenty of challenges
Getting Sunflower's quadcopters in the air won't be without its challenges. Air space is heavily regulated, and a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration is necessary to fly a drone at night or beyond your own line of sight. If you're near an airport, you'll need to jump through more hoops.

But Sunflower Labs expects those regulations to ease. Indeed, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao unveiled plans last month to liberalize some federal drone rules, in part to boost the economy and create jobs.

Sunflower and its competitors will also face concerns from broader society. Is a mail carrier going to be happy when a quadcopter swoops by? And how about neighbors who don't want the noise or privacy intrusion?

I found the drones weren't bothersome when I attended a company demonstration. I could hear the UAV through an open back door, but it was far quieter than gas-powered leaf blowers or lawnmowers.

As for privacy, the drone flies only on the perimeter of your property and the cameras point toward your house. That means they won't peer into other homes.

Of course, you'll have to explain that to an edgy neighbor.

Blankenship goes after McConnell's 'China family' in new ad

West Virginia GOP Senate hopeful Don Blankenship is amping up his racial attacks on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell with a new ad declaring, "Swamp captain Mitch McConnell has created millions of jobs for China people."

"While doing so, Mitch has gotten rich," Blankenship adds. "In fact, his China family has given him tens of millions of dollars."

McConnell's wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, was born in Taiwan and her parents are Chinese. Her father is chairman of a shipping company.

The new spot, which is expected to start airing on Friday, comes just ahead of the May 8 primary. As the dramatic contest comes to a close, Blankenship, a former coal baron who spent a year in prison following the 2010 explosion at his Upper Big Branch Mine that killed 29 workers, has focused his assault squarely on McConnell - sometimes in harshly racial terms.

During a recent interview with POLITICO, Blankenship said McConnell "has a lot of connections in China." He also said that Chao is "from China, so we have to be really concerned that we are in truth" putting America's interests first.



Earlier this week, Blankenship began running another TV spot labeling McConnell "cocaine Mitch." The spot is apparently in reference to a 2014 report that drugs were once found aboard a shipping vessel owned by Chao's family.

McConnell has singled out Blankenship for defeat, convinced that a Blankenship primary win would destroy the party's prospects for defeating Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in November. A McConnell-aligned super PAC has aired about $1.3 million in negative ads against Blankenship.

Blankenship is facing two more mainstream GOP opponents, Rep. Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. Recent polls have shown Blankenship fading.

With Blankenship going after Chao, McConnell's political team has swung back aggressively. Josh Holmes, a longtime McConnell political adviser, has described Blankenship as "mentally ill."

In his new spot, Blankenship responds to that accusation, saying: "Mitch's swamp people are now running false, negative ads against me. They're also childishly calling me despicable and mentally ill."

The ad closes with a shot of Blankenship holding two young children, one on each arm as he pronounces, "I will beat Joe Manchin and ditch cocaine Mitch for the sake of the kids."

Holmes fired back at Blankenship. "This clown is a walking talking case study for the limitation of a prison's ability to rehabilitate," he wrote in a text message.

While Blankenship has attempted to focus the campaign on China during the closing stretch of the race, McConnell's team has noted that in 1999 Blankenship spoke of moving to China and becoming a Chinese citizen. Blankenship's girlfriend was born in China, according to media reports.

A cargo ship which has been linked to anti-drug Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell was stopped and searched before departing from Colombia recently, with approximately 90 pounds of cocaine found on board by the Coast Guard. But now, Senator McConnell is doubling down on his reputation as an "Anti-Drug Senator" by railing against legalized marijuana.

The Senate Minority Leader said that he is firmly "against legalizing marijuana," even while this has put him at odds with his Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes.

McConnell acknowledge that marijuana is "not in the same category as heroin," even if it is treated as such by the DEA. Still, he said that legalizing the plant could "completely transform your society in a way that I think certainly most Kentuckians would not agree with."

 

"I don't think an answer to this, honestly, is to go in a direction of legalizing any of these currently illegal drugs," McConnell explained. "This whole movement in various parts of the country is a big mistake."

This is rather ironic, as The Free Thought Project reported back in November that drugs found on the ship, the Ping May, were carried by the vessel operated by the Foremost Maritime Corporation. That's a company owned by Mitch McConnell's in-laws, the Chao family.

Free Thought explained that "this connection is not only relevant because of the family connection, but also because the Chao family has often made large donations to McConnell's campaigns."

"In fact," they continue, "the Chao family has been funding McConnell since the late 1980s. Years later, in 1993, McConnell married Elaine Chao and secured the Chao family as one of his primary sources for investments."

A gift worth somewhere between 5 and 25 million dollars from the Chao Family made McConnel one of the richest senators in the country in 2008.

The Foremost Maritime Corporation is currently operating 16 dry bulk cargo ships, most of which are currently still in service.

When is a terrorist group not a terrorist group? Apparently the answer is that it ceases to be terrorist when it terrorizes someone who is an enemy of the United States. The most prominent recent example is the Mujaheddin e Khalq (MEK), a murderous Iranian Marxist cult which assassinated five Americans in the 1970s as part of its campaign against the Shah's government. It was removed from the State Department terrorist list in 2012 by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after it had promised not to kill any more Americans but really because it had bought the support of prominent politicians to include Elaine Chao, Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, and John Bolton. It also had the behind the scenes endorsement of both the Israeli Mossad and CIA, both of whom have been using it in their operations to kill Iranians and damage the country's infrastructure. Someone high up in the federal government, perhaps Hillary or even President Obama himself, must have decided that terrorists who kill only Iranians deserve a get out of jail free card from the State Department.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao jumped to the defense of her brother-in-law, Gordon Hartogensis, who was tapped by President Trump to lead a federal pension agency last month.

Apple Inc soon will be capturing images of North Carolina by drone; a 1,500-pound (680kg), unmanned aircraft will look for mosquitoes in Florida; and startup Flirtey will fly medical equipment on drones to heart-attack victims in Nevada.

The projects are among 10 announced by the US Transportation Department on Wednesday (May 9) that will help it assess how to regulate drones and integrate them safely into US airspace.

The United States has lagged other countries in experimentation with drones, something the programme hopes to correct.

Missing from the projects are Amazon.com Inc, the world's largest online retailer, and China's DJI, the world's largest maker of non-military drones. About a dozen applications that included DJI were rejected.

An application that would have seen Amazon deliver goods by drone to shoppers in New York City was also declined, a person familiar with the matter said.

Among the winners were microchip maker Intel Corp, plane maker Airbus SE, ride services company Uber Technologies Inc, delivery company FedEx Corp and software maker Microsoft Corp.

The contest drew 149 bids from locales looking to host flights at night, flights over people and other drone operations that US rules prohibit.

The applicants listed companies they would partner with in the experiments, and the winners may have a head start at the billions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs the young industry expects to create.

US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said dozens more projects could be approved in coming months, either with new waivers or under existing rules.

Asked about Amazon's absence, Deputy Transportation Secretary Jeff Rosen cited a rigorous process and said there were "no losers."

The wide interest in the US initiative, launched by US President Donald Trump last year, underscores the desire of a broad range of companies to have a say in how the fledgling industry is regulated and ultimately win authority to operate drones for purposes ranging from package delivery to crop inspection.

Elaine Chao's Interviews with Father Raise Ethical Flags

President Trump's Depart of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Elaine Chao has come under ethical scrutiny for appearing with her shipping mogul father in numerous Chinese media interviews, including at least one that appears to have been conducted at the DOT and prominently features the DOT flag in the background.

In at least a dozen interviews with Chinese and Chinese-American media outlets since her nomination, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has appeared beside her shipping magnate father, whose company carries goods between the United States and Asia, and who has given Chao and her husband [Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell] at least $5 million in the past 10 years.

In many of the videos, James Chao is introduced as founder and chairman of the Foremost Group shipping company, and, in discussing a 2016 biography about his life, speaks proudly of his daughter's role as secretary of transportation, as she sits beaming by his side.

One interview with New China Press published on April 12, 2017, features the pair sitting in what appears to be the Department of Transportation, with DOT flags in view behind the interviewer. Long portions of the interview are in Chinese, with James Chao talking about his life story, with a copy of his biography on the screen, and Elaine Chao extolling her father's success story as "lifting the status of Asian-Americans in America." She also touts his $40 million gift to Harvard University.

The appearances raise ethical concerns, experts say, because public officials are legally banned from using their office for any form of private gain for themselves or others.

Schweizer revealed how Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, Transportation Secretary Chao, received a "gift" from Chao's shipping mogul father-whose company Foremost Group does massive deals with the Chinese government-for between $5 to $25 million. Elaine Chao's sister, Angela Chao, also works for the Foremost Group and sits on the board of the Communist Chinese government's Bank of China.

Schweizer's book revealed that Angela Chao was appointed to the Chinese state bank 10 days after President Trump was elected. Since Elaine Chao's appointment as Trump's Transportation secretary, China's government-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) made a deal with the Chao family's Foremost Group to purchase 10 ships, which effectively increased the Chao family's fleet by nearly 50 percent.

In January 2017, Angela Chao joined the board of the state-owned Bank of China.

The finances of Sec. Elaine Chao and her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, are closely tied to the Foremost Group. In 2008, James Chao gave a $5 million-$25 million "gift" to Sen. McConnell, more than tripling his net worth. Contracts with other Chinese state-owned enterprises make up a significant portion of Foremost's business. James and Angela Chao previously served on the board of CSSC Holdings, a major contractor for the Chinese military and a key supporter of the PLA Navy.

Despite increasing threats of a trade war between the Trump Administration and the Chinese government, the Chao family's ties to the Chinese government do not seem to have cooled. To the contrary, as the 10-ship order suggests, they have accelerated. Moreover, James Chao was recently in China for an event promoting his new Chinese-language biography. The event was sponsored by Xinhua, the Chinese state-owned media outlet, and the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), a branch of the Communist Party known to be active in foreign influence operations. Sponsors praised James Chao as a great promoter of China abroad, referring to him as "vanguard of China-US exchanges."

The Chao's Chinese counterparties are often closely aligned with China's foreign policy elite. CPAFFC President Li Xiaolin, attended the book event with the Chao's. She is the daughter of a former Chinese president and wife of a former Major General in the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Another official in attendance now serves as Deputy Director of the United Front Work Department, a division of the Communist Party involved in managing foreign relationships.

Trade and infrastructure deals around the globe have become a centerpiece of China's foreign policy in recent years. These deals are part of the strategic "One Belt, One Road" initiative, a massive plan to expand China's sphere of influence across Asia and Africa. U.S. analysts view OBOR as both a military and economic challenge to the United States. One detailed study regards it as a "state-directed effort to bolster Chinese political influence and extend its military reach from Indonesia to East Africa."

But the Chao family describes it in much more benign terms. In a March 2017 statement, Angela Chao called OBOR "very important not only to China's development, but for the many surrounding and neighboring countries, and thus the world....I hope to also be able to contribute to this important initiative that has the potential to raise the standard of living for so many."

The United States has so far declined to participate directly in OBOR or join China's Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). However, the Trump Administration senta delegation to the 2017 Belt & Road Forum in a notable deviation from previous policy. Elaine Chao's position as Transportation Secretary gives her great influence over U.S. policy regarding central components of the plan. Secretary Chao is spearheadingthe Trump administration's $200 billion infrastructure proposal.

Foremost has yet to disclose the financial details of its latest deals with CSSC. Similar transactions with CSSC have recently cost over $47 million per vessel, a price that would place the total value of the Foremost deals at nearly half a billion dollars. Under current federal disclosure laws, which do not apply to adult relatives, Secretary Chao and Senator McConnell are not required to report their family's dealings with a major foreign military contractor. Secretary Chao is known to be extremely close with her father, who claims that she calls him nightly and involves him in official administration events "as often as she can."

(CNN)President Donald Trump's John Hancock is getting some attention, but it turns out the President, who made his mark bucking tradition during the election, is sticking with a long-standing White House pen supplier.

When he signs executive orders, Trump is using a Century II black lacquer and gold roller ball pen, made by manufacturer A. T. Cross. The Trump White House put in an initial order for 150 of the pens.

Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton also used the Cross Townsend pen, although Obama later switched to the Century II. Presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush were also known to use Cross pens, however, the official Cross-White House program began under Clinton.
Trump, Obama and Bush use the medium felt tip refills – Bush in blue, Obama and Trump in black. A spokesperson to Cross North America told CNN the felt tip refill is "extremely quick to dry and can write on most surfaces."
The Century II in black lacquer is available for purchase for the general public with an MSRP of $110 for the rollerball pen, plus the $6.50 felt tip refill.

Cross sells the pen to the White House through a distributor in the Washington area, the spokesperson said. The distributor gets a discount, paying less than $50 per pen, although it was not immediately clear how much they charge the White House.

A spokeswoman for the White House declined a request for comment.
Traditionally, these pens are handed out as souvenirs to guests attending the bill signings, and Trump has used the pen for each order he's signed thus far, often holding up the paper to show off his signature.
Trump's pen first made its mark moments after the inauguration ceremony when he headed inside the Capitol to sign some bills for his Cabinet nominees alongside family members and Hill leadership.
"Yeah, I'd like to give some pens out. The government is getting stingy, right?" the newly sworn-in President said, a stack of Cross pens before him.
The congressional leaders were picky about their pens, and Trump worked to accommodate everyone.
When he tried to pass off a pen to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that was used for a bill regarding Housing and Urban Development Secretary nominee Ben Carson, Schumer groaned, prompting a laugh from House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Schumer also emphatically stated he didn't want the Education Department nominee Betsy DeVos pen, "No, thank you."

Pelosi later got her own pen from the Health and Human Services nominee Tom Price bill.
"Come here, I'll give you Elaine. Do you want Elaine?" Trump asked Pelosi.
But she passed the Elaine Chao pen over to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Chao's husband, saying: "The leader wants Elaine."
"You know what, the leader should have Elaine," the President said.
Schumer later made a pen trade, swapping Carson at HUD, for the Department of Veterans Affairs nominee David Shulkin.
"I can't get too many pens," he said.
"No no, you're only getting the one," Trump said, later adding, "I think we're going to need some more pens, by the way."

"This will be the first test of the Trump Administration in its commitment to New York City and its commitment to infrastructure," said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) at a Dec. 13 public forum. "I've talked to the President-Elect about both. He's called me and he says he wants to do a major infrastructure bill of [about] a trillion dollars. That's great. It needs to be done in the right way.

Anybody who runs for office who's talking about a massive infrastructure project, this has sort of been laid up for him, better than any other major project, said Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.). "If you just look at the cost-benefit analysis alone, just the economic case, there's no better dollar you can invest in America right now in terms of the return on that investment that you're going to get. If you want to grow this nation's GDP like the President-Elect says he wants to do, get up to 3%, 4%, this is the region that's going to help contribute to that. And in order to make that happen you've got to prime the pump and put the infrastructure in place so that we can explode in our growth."

"We saw in the ARC (Access to the Region's Core) Tunnel that when you don't have all of the stakeholders in agreement, then you have failure," said Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.). "Here we have all the stakeholders in agreement. It took time to align them. But those are all aligned, so now the push is actually to fund it."

Gateway (download a map from the link below) is the second attempt at such a massive project. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie cancelled the first attempt, ARC Tunnel-also called the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE Tunnel) or the Mass Transit Tunnel-in October 2010, citing possible cost overruns and New Jersey's shortage of funds. $600 million had already been spent on the project. Critics of the ARC Tunnel dubbed the project "the tunnel to Macy's basement," in reference to its terminus under 34th Street in Manhattan, but also to the fact that, contrary to how it was originally scoped out, it would not connect with the existing Penn Station New York, thus offering no through-train service and providing no benefit for Amtrak or the New York MTA, which has been considering Metro-North service to PSNY with a New Jersey train storage facility.

"At its busiest point between New York and New Jersey, the Northeast Corridor consists of only two main tracks," said Amtrak Board Chairman Anthony Coscia. "Those tracks pass over 106-year-old, often malfunctioning, Portal Bridge, through a century old and significantly [Superstorm] Sandy damaged Hudson River tunnel and into an overcrowded and constrained Penn Station."

"I think they've recognized that to make America great again, they've got to make our infrastructure great again," said former PANY&NJ Vice Chair Scott Rechler. "I think there's a recognition to Sen. Schumer's point that it's not all the sexy stuff. When you look at our infrastructure, take the Port Authority's budget, take the MTA budget, more than 50% of those $30 billion budgets is repairing what is broken, not doing what is new. If they think about that trillion dollars, it's probably half and half. There's got to be a real focus on politics not trumping professionalism, and [on] waste. We as a country and we in this region have seen too many projects started by government agencies [where] the funding goes into black holes and the delays occur and they don't get done."
