Betsy DeVos considers allowing schools to use federal funds to buy guns

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is considering allowing states to use federal grant money to buy guns for schools, people familiar with the matter said.

Two people said the question has been raised inside the Education Department as to whether states are allowed to use money available through Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants to buy firearms. Unlike other federal grants, this one does not expressly prohibit such purchases.

Allowing schools to use federal money to buy firearms would fuel anger among those who say the response to school shootings should be fewer guns, not more. But it could find support among gun rights advocates who say that having firearms in schools would make them less likely to be targeted.

"The department is constantly considering and evaluating policy issues, particularly issues related to school safety," said Education Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill. "The secretary nor the department issues opinions on hypothetical scenarios."

The policy consideration was first reported by the New York Times.

Report: Trump intrigued by ex-Blackwater chief's Afghanistan strategy

President Trump is growing increasingly interested in a proposal from Erik Prince, the former head of Iraq War security firm Blackwater, to replace military personnel in Afghanistan with private contractors, NBC reported Friday. Prince, the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, said the Pentagon's 17 years of armed conflict in Afghanistan since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks haven't yielded a decisive victory partly because military personnel are rotated through the country without spending enough time there to effectively implement winning strategies.

Initial efforts in Afghanistan in 2001, with Central Intelligence Agency officers, warplanes and Special Forces personnel, devastated the ruling Taliban in a matter of weeks, he said, and using private contractors who would work side-by-side with Afghan forces on a long-term basis could duplicate that success. Prince's former company, Blackwater, shows the challenge involved, however: Some of its guards were convicted in 2014 of federal charges linked to a September 2007 shooting at Baghdad's Nisur Square that left 14 unarmed civilians dead and more wounded. Prince told NBC that he hasn't spoken with the president directly about his plan, but is planning a media campaign he hopes will convince Trump to embrace it. Blackwater, which the former Navy SEAL founded in 1997, was renamed Xe Services in 2009 and later taken over by private investors who dubbed it Academi. He now leads Frontier Services Group, a Hong Kong-listed security and logistics company. The choice in Afghanistan today is between a conventional plan that Prince says hasn't worked and "a small and unconventional plan that does work," he told NBC's Andrea Mitchell. "Every special forces officer I've talked to, if you ask them honestly, they'll say that is the approach that works. They might not like my plan specifically, but small and unconventional and living with and working with the Afghans is the only way to do it." Leaving the Pentagon in charge of decisions on the war, Prince said, would mean only continuing conflict. He believes the president's decision to campaign against "endless wars" was correct and says Trump should have stuck with that approach rather than spending $62 billion to increase the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

White House advisers are worried the the president's growing impatience with the lack of success in Afghanistan will prompt him to take the proposal seriously, NBC said. A National Security Council spokesperson said Friday that no such plan is under consideration. Trump remains committed to finding a political solution that would end the Afghanistan war, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said earlier this week. "We're exploring all avenues for dialogue in close coordination with the Afghan government, and we're going to continue to do that," she said.

Petition to make LeBron James secretary of education gains traction

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) - An online petition is gaining steam to make LeBron James secretary of education, replacing Betsy DeVos.

As of Thursday morning, over 8,500 people signed the petition, nearing its 9,000 person goal.

"LeBron James is an inspiration to kids all over the country," said the petitions creator Rebecca G. "He's shown he cares about America's youth and understands the power of public education in helping children meet their true potential."

The online petition comes after James opened his I PROMISE School in Akron last month. The school is part of the public school system and offers graduates free tuition to University of Akron.

Former Obama official says Trump wants an uneducated workforce due to his 'authoritarian tendencies'

Former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan suggested that President Donald Trump is intentionally harming the American education system in order to institute an authoritarian government on Thursday.

Duncan told CNN, "I'm not sure President Trump wants to have the best-educated workforce. I think it doesn't play to his authoritarian tendencies."

Duncan's comments are the latest in a string of criticisms he's lobbed toward the current administration.
How's that?

While out promoting his new book, Duncan has taken a number of opportunities to criticize the leadership of both the president and current Education Secretary head Betsy DeVos.

Speaking on CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday, Duncan talked about how the education system "runs on lies."

The toughest lie, he said, is that "we say we value kids and we've raised a generation of young people teens who have been raised on mass shootings and gun violence. And that simply doesn't happen in other nations."

The former secretary went on to tell host Margaret Brennan that he feels "a huge sense of urgency" to fix the U.S. education system.

"We have got to get better, faster as a nation," he said. "We're not top 10 in anything."

Duncan then criticized DeVos, saying she doesn't understand some basic concepts of education policy.

When pressed to explain further, Duncan said of DeVos, "You probably saw in the news - for me it was just a crazy metaphor - that about a week ago her yacht was found adrift. $40 million yacht just out there. For me that sort of represents where they are in terms of education policy. There isn't one."
Anything else?

The name of Duncan's book is "How Schools Work," and is being published by Simon & Schuster, which is a division of CBS Corporation. A review published in the Chicago Tribune last week proclaimed, "Arne Duncan's 'How Schools Work' is really about politics."

Duncan hasn't been afraid to wade into public discourse in the past, either. Last year, he joined former assistant education secretary for civil rights, Catherine Lhamon, in writing an op-ed slamming the Trump administration's decision to withdraw guidance on bathroom access for transgender students.

The title of the piece was "The White House's thoughtless, cruel and sad rollback of transgender rights."

Secretary Duncan served under President Barack Obama from 2009-15, following his tenure as the CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

Education Department reinstates college accrediting service that Obama terminatedDepartment of Education secretary Betsy DeVos earlier this year reinstated the for-profit college accreditor Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools even though the organization did not meet federal education standards.

The Education Department March 2018 report, released Friday in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, revealed that department analysts had concerns with restoring ACICS and expressed those concerns to DeVos, Politico reported.

The report concluded that the Trump administration should not reinstate ACICS, however, a month after the report was released, DeVos moved forward and restored the federal powers of the organization.

Former President Barack Obama terminated the organization in 2016 after the administration found it had not been following 21 federal standards.

DeVos was able to reinstate ACICS after a federal judge ruled the Obama administration unlawfully ignored relevant evidence in making the 2016 decision.

However, department spokeswoman Liz Hill suggested to Politico in an email that DeVos had no say in the decision for ACICS to be reinstated, but it was instead the judge's ruling that forced the decision.

"The Secretary did not make the determination to reinstate ACICS," Hill said. "A judge ruled that the previous administration failed to consider 36,000 pages of relevant evidence before making its decision to withdraw ACICS's recognition as an accreditor and remanded the case back to the Secretary."

DeVos is working on a more long-term decision regarding the status of ACICS.

Duncan then inquired about the so-called "gun show loophole" and other talking points to push on the public.

Emanuel served as the Obama White House Chief of Staff from 2008 to January of 2009. Fittingly, the ruthless politico famously said, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste, and what I mean by that is, it's an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before." The murder of 20 children included, apparently.

Manhattan Institute senior fellow Max Eden called the immediate politicization of the tragedy "shameful."
Duncan has been under fire following the Parkland, Florida school shooting that transpired earlier this year, as the shooter's repeated bad behavior was reportedly swept under the rug due to a school program intended to close the gap in the racial disparity in public school disciplinary records, including criminal actions. Such a program was a model for the Obama Administration's infamous "Dear Colleague" letter in 2014 directing schools to do the same. As reported by The Daily Wire in April, the seemingly well-intentioned program has resulted in alleged rape, violence, murder, extreme bullying, and cover-ups.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos heard from proponents and opponents of the directive in April and is currently considering whether to rescind the measure.

Founders of parent and student advocacy group Parent2Parent Network, Nicole and Josh Landers, told The Daily Wire in a statement that the "email exchange demonstrates a shocking political conspiracy to draw upon an agenda rather than focus on the murders of 20 school children and 6 educators from Sandy Hook."

"Two days after this horrific shooting, the focus of their response was to manipulate people's emotions rather than supporting the families of the victims," the statement continued. "It is clear that Emanuel and Duncan do not care about students' lives, they only care about their gun control agenda and their image."

"It appears that former Secretary Duncan was and is using the gun control platform to deflect from his failed educational policies which have negatively impacted nearly 51 million students and over 3 million teachers nationwide," they added.

Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest child, reportedly met with an emissary representing the princes from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates who wanted to help his father win the 2016 election during the campaign.

Trump Jr., who has already faced scrutiny for the June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer who claimed to have damaging political opposition research on Donald Trump's then-opponent Hillary Clinton, held the meeting at Trump Tower in August 2016 with the emissary, George Nader, and private security contractor Erik Prince, The New York Times reported Saturday. Israeli and apparent social media expert Joel Zamel was also present at the meeting.

The meeting could represent another example of the Trump campaign meeting with the representative of a foreign government intent on helping the billionaire claim victory in the 2016 election.

Such contact generated Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election in favor of the current president, and Mueller's team is reportedly looking into the Emirates potential role or influence in the election as well.

It is unclear if any action was taken following the meeting, and Trump Jr. stated through a lawyer that nothing occurred afterward.

Alan Futerfas, an attorney for Trump Jr., explained to The Times "prior to the 2016 election, Donald Trump Jr. recalls a meeting with Erik Prince, George Nader and another individual who may be Joel Zamel. They pitched Mr. Trump Jr. on a social media platform or marketing strategy. He was not interested and that was the end of it."

Nader, who Newsweek reported was convicted and jailed on child pornography charges in the early 1990s, is presently cooperating with Mueller's investigation and Prince has long been a controversial figure and whose sister is presently secretary of the Education Department, Betsy DeVos.

Both Nader and Prince have faced scrutiny over setting up a meeting in the Seychelles in January 2017, just days before Trump's inauguration, during which Prince met with a Russian tied to Russian President Vladimir Putin over a possible backchannel between the Trump administration and the Kremlin, according to The Washington Post.

The revelation follows the release earlier this week of Trump Jr.'s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last year, during which he discussed the June 2016 meeting with the Russian lawyer and denied any collusion taking place.

His sister, Betsy DeVos, married into one of the most influence political families in the Midwest, the DeVos's, and began helping to run the Republican party machine in Michigan.

That marriage, which tied the Prince and DeVos family together, has given Erik unprecedented political access into the federal government. His list of close allies including Steve Bannon, U.S. President Donald Trump's former chief strategist. His sister gives him a direct line of access to Trump himself.

Erik became a Navy SEAL and then established his own private military firm in 1997, Blackwater.

Qteam, please tell Betsy DeVos to break up the Texas Education Agency. Other than sexual abuse of child, it is absolutely impossible to fire a teacher in the state of Texas because TEA. Teachers can bully, mentally and emotionally manipulate children and if the school covers for them, (which they usually do because of the strong teacher union) the parent has no recourse. I've called TEA twice and they flat out told me I could file a grievance but they would do nothing with it.

Homeschool not a viable option. Child has a disability and the school provides services that insurance doesnt cover and we cant afford to pay out of pocket.

Crying, grades have dropped, stressed, has started having accidents at night. Complained and retaliatory actions taken toward parent and child. Total disgrace.

Abbott, if youre reading this, do something to reign in TEA. They are facilitating teachers bullying children. Elementary children dont understand this is what is happening to them. If you allow it, you are complicit, and I will never vote for you again. Rant over.

Businesses affected from parents not being able to go to work. Vacation plans disrupted (kids and teachers will have to make up missed days). Teachers beginning to freak out because students achievement tests are looming and their jobs are tied to the results. (In the current dumbed down atmosphere in the classroom – it's already nearly impossible to teach.) And it's all being blamed on R's!!

Betsy DeVos has called for teachers to go back to the. I have two adult children working in the school systems - one an administrator, one a teacher. It is known by those who are really "woke" understand there is a huge liberal push behind all of this. The unions are out in mass firing the teachers and communities up. This is worrisome. We cannot let our red states get turned blue by allowing (((them))) to use our children as mascots for (((their))) agenda. We need to shine the red light in the states that are being affected.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has evidence that may refute what Blackwater founder Erik Prince told Congress about his scrutinized meeting with a Russian financier, according to a report.
Prince, who is also the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, told a House of Representatives committee last year that he had a chance encounter and only one beer with Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia's sovereign investment fund, at the bar of a luxury hotel in the Seychelles.
Reports had said that the private military mogul was part of a backchannel connection between the Trump orbit and the Kremlin, though he says that "I didn't fly there to meet any Russian guy."
Mueller's probe is into alleged Moscow election meddling in 2016 and potential collusion with Trump's circle.

Prince said that he was in the remote Indian Ocean nation to meet with United Arab Emirates officials, though another businessman who worked with the Middle Eastern nation has told investigators that he set up a meeting been the American and the Russian, according to ABC News.
Documents reportedly show that George Nader, a Lebanese-American, met with Prince in New York and informed him about Dmitriev before his trip

In Prince's testimony to Congress, he had said that he was only informed about Dmitriev being in the same when a member of the UAE's royal family told him that the Russian banker was in the hotel bar and might be interested in chatting.

A spokesman for Prince told the Daily News Friday that "Erik has said all there is to say to the committee and has nothing further to add."

Nader, who has long claimed influence in both Washington and the Middle East and also was convicted in a 1991 child porn case, has recently emerged as a focus in the Russia investigation after reports that he is cooperating with Mueller
Beyond setting up the Dmitriev meeting, he was also reportedly attended the December 2016 meeting between the UAE's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Trump associates Jared Kushner and Steve Bannon.
An in-depth piece on Nader from the New York Times this week also noted that he has previously done business with Russia including frequent visits and a 2012 deal for Iraq to buy weapons from the Kremlin.

Many of Trump's "1st Phase" choices have been this type I believe. It was so important for Trump to be able to negotiate with the bad guys. This is why McMaster was called out for meeting with Petraeus and Soros, well uh, yeah, someone has to meet with these guys. I would also say Rex Tillerson was another one of these guys. He has had some important ties to Russians, and clearly now he's not needed. Even Bannon seemed to have a close relationship with Kissinger.

Here's why progressives hate Betsy DeVos

So why, as "60 Minutes"' Lesley Stahl put it, has Secretary DeVos become the "most hated Cabinet secretary?"

One reason-as opinion pieces in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have argued-is that some of the Democratic party's most deep-pocketed and powerful interest groups are teachers' unions who realize that they will no longer have a near-monopoly on education.

Another reason, as the New York Times' Ross Douthat argued, is that the Democratic party's upper-middle-class suburbanite constituency - who are big supporters, in theory, of public education - bristle at the idea of DeVos' charters and vouchers being attractive to poor and minority families (who in their view belong in public schools) or families with ideological or religious convictions that differ from their own.

On second thought, I guess it's not so hard to understand why the left's hard-core education bureaucracy is so opposed to her. She is a serious threat to the status quo that has served them - if not students - so well.

To clear up any misunderstanding caused by the left's holy war against her, here are four things Americans should understand about Secretary DeVos' educational vision:

First, as she noted in the "60 Minutes" interview, Secretary DeVos wants to liberate American education from encroachment by federal bureaucracy. Under the Obama administration, the federal government functioned as a giant octopus, bypassing families, communities, and states in order to reach its tentacles into school curriculum, teacher evaluation, values conformity, and even restroom policies. Betsy DeVos signals a departure from that era. Her stated educational philosophy suggests that she will not turn Democratic encroachment into Republican encroachment; instead, she will reduce federal encroachment in order to empower families, local communities, and states.

Second, Secretary DeVos emphasizes freedom of thought. During her confirmation hearings, the media made much ado about her "Dutch Calvinist" religious views. But Dutch Calvinism is a rich religious tradition that emphasizes the rights and freedoms of families, communities, and religions. For that reason, it finds adherents on the right and on the left. Additionally, it places an especially high value on education, but emphasizes that a plural society should be tolerant enough to allow diverse families and communities to build their own educational institutions and choose which institution(s) their children can attend. Unfortunately, many liberal educators are quite illiberal, unwilling to tolerate any type of educational diversity that undermines the federal government's impulse toward command-and-control.

Third, she wants to empower financially-disadvantaged families to send their children to whichever school they deem best. Under the current system, the government taxes citizens in order to provide education, but then dictates and determines how the tax money can be used. The message is clear: the federal government-rather than the family or local community-is responsible for shaping the way a child understands and interprets the world.

Under Secretary DeVos' system of vouchers and charters, however, citizens will be able to exercise more influence over their own child's education. They will also be able to send their children to a wider variety of schools, including those that would have been financially prohibitive without the vouchers. This sort of system is supported by prominent intellectuals and educators such as Anthony Bradley and has been supported in the past by Democratic politicians such as Cory Booker.

Fourth, Secretary DeVos does not come to her job as a career politician or an educational ideologue. She comes as a lifelong education advocate and philanthropist who has given tens of millions of dollars to public and private educational institutions.

CommonCore is gone now, (so I've heard), and ideally the fiasco that students loans has become, will be taken care of so that Americans can get in school, get educated for the jobs of the future (technology, manufacturing, and clean energy), all while pushing STEM programs heavily across the country in primary schools.
