Perhaps recognizing how offensive such ties will be to voters concerned over future terrorist attacks on this country by radical Muslims professing allegiance to Sharia law, the Clinton campaign on Monday tried to downplay Ms. Abedin's involvement in the Journal and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Clinton surrogate group Media Matters claimed predictably there was "no evidence" that Ms. Abedin or her family had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and that Trump campaign staffers who spoke of these ties were conspiracy theorists.

To debunk the evidence, Media Matters pointed to a Snopes.com "fact-check" piece that cited as its sole source... Senator John McCain. This is the same John McCain who met Libyan militia leader Abdelkarim Belhaj, a known al Qaeda associate, and saluted him as "my hero" during a 2011 visit to Benghazi.

Boeing Says Engine Inlet Redesign Will Pace 737-7, 737-10 Certification(Aviationweek.com)

Boeing says it can develop new 737 MAX engine inlets in a year or less and sees the task as the new primary pacing item for 737-7 and 737-10 certification, CEO Dave Calhoun said.

"We'll step up resources, we'll step up whatever testing is required, and we will do everything we can to inform the FAA about that particular part of that program," Calhoun said on Boeing's Jan. 31 call on 2023 fourth quarter (Q4) earnings. "That is the pole in the tent all of us should be watching."

CFO Brian West said developing the new inlets "will take about a year." Calhoun, recapping a recent conversation with Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), said he told the senator the time frame could be closer to nine months.

The new inlets are needed to address a hazard that could see the composite parts overheat and fail if engine anti-ice is used in certain circumstances-notably dry air. Boeing petitioned the FAA to have the 737-7 certified while it developed a permanent fix and introduced it on the 737-10. But the company on Jan. 30 confirmed it would reverse course, pull its request, and incorporate the change-which will be retrofitted on all in-service 737 MAXs as well as on new aircraft-as part of 737-7 certification.

The ramifications mean launch customer Southwest Airlines likely will not put its first 737-7s into revenue service until mid-2025 at the earliest. The carrier has long said it would need about six months following initial deliveries to get FAA approvals for manuals, extended operations-ETOPS-and other airline-specific items.

West downplayed the ramifications of another year or so of certification work on the 737's projected delivery pace. The company's undelivered inventory of around 200 737 MAXs includes a total of 35 737-7s and 737-10s.

Meanwhile, the company is committed to satisfying FAA's stepped-up scrutiny on both ongoing certification programs and 737 production. Fallout from the Jan. 5 Alaska Airlines 737-9 exit plug failure prompted the agency to order additional surveillance on Boeing and hold off on approving planned 737 production rate increases beyond the approved figure of 38 per month.

"We'll maintain production at 38 per month and work transparently with the FAA to complete all requirements for future increases," West said, adding that the current rate does not include any "blanks," or empty final assembly line positions sometimes used to help manage production flow.

Boeing's 737 supply chain may be delivering at or above a level that supports producing 38 aircraft per month, but rollouts have been consistently lower. Data compiled by consultants Aero Analysis Partners/AIR show Boeing averaged about 24 737 roll-outs per month in the fourth quarter and just more than 28 per month for the full year. It reached 38 back in June, rolling out 40, but quickly dropped amid production quality issues that slowed the lines and required re-work.

While roll-outs may lag below Boeing's nominal rate, monthly deliveries could reach or even top 38 per month thanks to airplanes coming out of stored inventory. The 35 uncertified aircraft won't move for a while, but Calhoun confirmed that deliveries to China have resumed "one at a time." Most of the 200 737 MAXs awaiting delivery are destined for China or India.

"We still expect to deliver most of these airplanes by year-end as we work towards shutting down the shadow factory" conducting reactivation and rework activities, West said. About 25 of the 200 inventoried 737s are 2023 rollouts that still require some work before delivery, he added.

The 787 program is operating at a production rate of five per month and is on pace to get to 10 per month in the 2025-26 time frame. Boeing has about 60 787s in its undelivered inventory-50 of which need rework before delivery to correct production problems.

Production on the 777-9 resumed last quarter and the program timeline "remains unchanged," West said. Boeing's latest timeline for the program, which has suffered several notable delays, sees first deliveries in 2025.

Deadly week: Crashes claim lives of 5 US service members

Senior U.S. general says mishaps do not represent a crisis; national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon.

Three U.S. military aircraft crashes this week that killed five service members within two days have some on Capitol Hill worried the military's worn-out air fleet may not be getting the funding it needs.

At a press conference Thursday, the director of the Pentagon's Joint Staff refused to say the crashes marked a negative trend when a reporter asked if military aviation was in crisis.

"I would reject 'wave' and 'crisis,'" said Marine Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, Jr. "We're are going to look at each one in turn. Each one is tragic. We regret each one. We will look at them carefully. I am certainly not prepared to say that it's a 'wave' of mishaps or some form of 'crisis.'"

But the crashes this week indicate a continuation of a disturbing pattern.

There have been five noncombat aviation crashes in 2018, killing nine service members - 37 were killed in aircraft crashes last year, nearly double the number killed in 2016.

Only 37 percent of Marine Corps CH-53E heavy-lift helicopters can fly right now, the head of Marine Corps aviation, Lt. Gen. Steven R. Rudder, told Congress in November.

"If you are flying a smaller number of airplanes, they break more frequently, and if you can't pay for the parts, you have a smaller number of airplanes, and so you're not getting the hours," Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert B. Neller told a Reagan National Defense Forum audience moderated by Fox News's Jennifer Griffin in December.

"Last year in aviation, we had a horrible safety year, probably the worst year in 10 years," Neller added.

"I think the high-op tempo and stress on the force over the past 17 years of continuous combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and elsewhere is catching up to the U.S. military," Todd Harrison, a defense expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Task & Purpose.

The Pentagon just received $700 billion in the massive spending bill signed by Trump last month - a sizable portion of that is supposed to help fix aircraft and improve pilot training.

A month after the Marine Corps transport plane crash killing 16, a Marine MV-22 Osprey crashed off the coast of Australia, while landing aboard a U.S. Navy warship. Three Marines drowned, 23 others were rescued.

Days later, Neller ordered all of his aircraft grounded for 24 hours.

Eight hours before the deadly Super Stallion crash in Southern California, a Marine Corps Harrier jet crashed shortly after takeoff in the East African nation of Djibouti.

The pilot ejected, and was released from the hospital later in the week, according to the Marines.

But just a day later, a Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion was forced to make an emergency landing on a beach in Djibouti causing minor damage. No marines were hurt.

But the two crashes in consecutive days were enough for the Djibouti government to ground all U.S. military flights Thursday, including Reaper drones from the largest American base in Africa - hindering counterterrorism operations in nearby Somalia and Yemen, where the U.S. military has launched dozens of airstrikes this year.

The U.S. military cut short a two-week training exercise, which had just started in Djibouti when the grounding was announced, potentially robbing American forces of vital training.

A year ago, the exercise was dubbed "preparation for real-world missions in the region - because we don't get 'do-overs' when it comes to crisis operations," said Navy Cmdr. Tom Sandoval, a deputy operations director at the time.

House Armed Services Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, warned the White House in an interview earlier this week not to "rob" the military's readiness money to fund the National Guard at the border.

When President George W. Bush sent 6,000 troops to the border, it cost $415 million - money that was stripped from the Air Force and Navy's Operations and Maintenance (O&M) budgets.

When President Barack Obama did the same thing in 2010, sending 1,200 Guard troops to the border, it cost roughly $160 million.

The Pentagon's top spokeswoman assured reporters that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has not ignored the readiness problems of his forces.

"Border security is national security. We are leaning forward to support the president, and his intent and his goal," said chief Pentagon spokeswoman Dana W. White about Trump's move. "But readiness remains our top priority."

But when asked by a reporter if the Pentagon could rule out stripping critical operations and maintenance dollars to fund the National Guard deployment to the border, the Pentagon was mum.

"We haven't made those determinations," White said.

A new "support cell" to coordinate Defense Department and Department of Homeland Security efforts would examine the issue, White said.

Maj. Stephen Del Bagno of Valencia, Calif., the pilot of the F-16 fighter jet that crashed outside Las Vegas during a training flight Wednesday, flew for the elite Thunderbirds, the Air Force's premier flight demonstration team. He had accumulated more than 3,500 flying hours in 30 different air frames, and had been a civilian flight instructor before joining the Air Force.

The crash that killed Del Bagno this week marked the third time in less than two years a Thunderbirds jet had crashed.

Tuesday, a Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed in Southern California, killing four marines. The Super Stallion is the largest helicopter in the U.S. military, capable of carrying up to 55 marines with full combat load.

The Marine Corps identified the four killed late Thursday: Capt. Samuel A. Schultz, 28, of Huntington Valley, Pa., 1st Lt. Samuel D. Phillips, 27, of Pinehurst, N.C., Gunnery Sgt. Derik R. Holley, 33, of Dayton, Ohio, and Lance Cpl. Taylor J. Conrad, 24, of Baton Rouge, La.

The crash was the deadliest for the Marine Corps since a KC-130 crashed in the Mississippi Delta, killing 15 marines and a sailor in July.

The Conspiracy Theory That Says Trump Is a Genius(NYTimes.paywallcocksuckers.com)

Last week Roseanne Barr - who, with the hit reboot of her show, has become one of the most prominent Donald Trump supporters in the country - tweeted that the president has freed hundreds of children a month from sexual bondage. "He has broken up trafficking rings in high places everywhere," she wrote. (The tweet has since been deleted.)

Barr's tweet, puzzling to the casual observer, was a reference to QAnon, an expansive, complicated pro-Trump conspiracy theory. The theory is fascinating as an artifact of our current political derangement, but more than that, it's profoundly revealing about the lengths to which some Trump supporters will go to convince themselves that his presidency is going well.

As Paris Martineau explained in New York Magazine, QAnon was born last October, when someone claiming to have "Q" level security clearance started a cryptic thread on 4chan, the online message board and troll playground. It was titled, "The Calm Before the Storm," a phrase Trump had recently used. Q posted hints, some in the form of questions, ostensibly meant to help clued-in Trump supporters understand what was really going on in Washington beneath the facade of chaos and incompetence. ("What is military intelligence? Why go around the 3 letter agencies?")

From these clues, a sprawling community on message boards, YouTube videos and Twitter accounts has elaborated an enormous, ever-mutating fantasy narrative about the Trump presidency. In the QAnon reality, Trump only pretended to collude with Russia in order to create a pretext for the hiring of Robert Mueller, the special counsel, who is actually working with Trump to take down an inconceivably evil and powerful network of coup-plotters and child sex traffickers that includes Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and George Soros.
"QAnon points out that this is the beginning of the end for the Clintons," said Jerome Corsi - a prominent proponent of the lie that Obama was born in Kenya - on a YouTube broadcast in January. He warned that the world would be forced to contend with "films of innocent children pleading for their lives while people are butchering them." Once that happens, presumably, Trump will be revealed as a master of 12-dimensional chess who successfully distracted smirking elites with his buffoonery while he was quietly saving the world.

Posts on other websites, as well as YouTube videos, Twitter accounts and even a book, have taken the theory in countless directions, encompassing characters from the model Chrissy Teigen to disgraced politician Anthony Weiner. The creativity poured into QAnon is striking; it's like something between a sprawling work of crowdsourced postmodern fiction and an immersive role-playing game.

But for many people, QAnon is very real. Barr has tried to make contact with Q on Twitter. InfoWars, the website run by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones - who has a close relationship with Trump confidant Roger Stone - has consistently promoted it. Last month, Cheryl Sullenger, senior vice president of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, posted an article on the group's website about an "intel drop" from Q revealing a White House plan to end Planned Parenthood. Sean Hannity retweeted a post with the #QAnon hashtag.

Some elements of the QAnon conspiracy theory - secret elites, kidnapped children - are classic, even archetypical. "In all Western culture, you can argue that all conspiracy theories, no matter how diverse, come from the idea of the Jews abducting children," Chip Berlet, the co-author of "Right-Wing Populism in America: Too Close for Comfort," told me. Stories about globalists stealing children for sex aren't that far removed from stories about Jews stealing children to use their blood making matzo.

One twist, however, makes QAnon unusual. Conspiracy theories are usually about evil cabals manipulating world events. QAnon, by contrast, is a conspiracy theory in which the good guys - in this case, Trump and his allies - are in charge. It's a dream of power rather than a bitter alibi for victimhood. It seems designed to cope with the cognitive dissonance caused by the gap between Trump as his faithful followers like to imagine him, and Trump as he is.
On Thursday, the usually even-keeled Mike Allen published a piece in Axios titled, "The case for extreme worry," about how those close to Trump are panicked by his erraticism. The president's whims and resentments have led to stock market convulsions and may soon result in painful tariffs that affect American farmers, an important part of his base. Mueller's special counsel investigation continues to close in. Republicans have lost special election seats in red-leaning areas all over the country. But QAnon offers assurance that everything is under control.

Barr, for example, retweeted a QAnon post arguing that conservative criticism of the omnibus spending bill, legislation many on the right deplored, was shortsighted. In releasing funds to the military, it said, the bill would set off a climactic series of events: "Swamp drain begins, military seizes TRILLIONS in cabal assets, returning them to the people." An inspector general report would then reveal the establishment's unspeakable crimes, after which "the strings will be cut from the propaganda machine and people will stop falling for the garbage MSM," or mainstream media. Trump, and those who believe in him, would be vindicated.

You don't create a wild fantasy about your leader being a covert genius unless you understand that to most people, he looks like something quite different. You don't need an occult story about how your side is secretly winning if it's actually winning. Publicly, many right-wing politicians and pundits disdain the Mueller investigation and pretend to believe that Trump's ties to Russia are negligible. But among part of the Trump base, the effort to explain them away appears to be creating psychic strain.

"You cannot possibly imagine the size of this," said a Q dispatch last month. "Trust the plan. Trust there are more good than bad." Q almost certainly doesn't know any state secrets, but he, she, or they understand that some fervent Trump supporters require more reassurance than they're willing to admit. Their desperate conviction that they will be proven right about Trump betrays a secret fear that they will be proven wrong.

Disturbing security footage has captured the moment a helpless man was beaten and robbed by a large group of teens in downtown Cincinnati. But all suspects remain on the streets, thanks partly to the disgraceful "justice" system.

WLWT, which obtained the security footage, reported the awful assault happened on January 23 around 8 p.m. on E. 6th Street.

The footage captured by WLWT shows the victim walking up the sidewalk when he is suddenly ambushed from behind by the youths. He is smacked once in the back of the head, which causes him to fall.

The thugs proceed to rain punches and kick him several times while he's on the ground. The victim appears to be groaning during the assault.

Then, one of the teens snatches the man's phone and walks away with most of the crew. A few thugs remain behind to land a few more kicks as the victim screams, "Help me!"

The man somehow escaped with only minor injuries despite the vicious attack, according to WLWT.

Cincinnati police said two people were arrested the same night in connection to the incident: 18-year-old Jadin Shaw and a 14-year-old.

But Shaw was released after posting a $10,000 bond the following day. The younger teen was taken to a juvenile detention center before a so-called judge released him back on the streets the next day as well.

The Municipal Judge who allowed Shaw to bond out is Judge Donte Johnson, according to WKRC.

Fraternal Order of Police Queen City Lodge #69 president, Ken Kober released a Facebook post dripping in anger regarding the weak justice system that allowed these thugs to continue to terrorize the Cincy streets.

These judges let these two folks right out. Both of them are out walking around the street today. In fact, one of them was seen in the same area last night, just walking around, free to go. My guess is (they're) probably out looking for another victim.

When are judges going to protect the citizens of this county? It's shameful.
