Then for Khan, in January of 2004, the good life came crashing down. He was sixty-eight at the time. U.S. agents had intercepted a German ship named the BBC China carrying parts for a Libyan nuclear-weapons-production program, and Libya, in subsequently renouncing its nuclear ambitions, had named Pakistan, and particularly the Khan Research Laboratories, as the supplier of what was to be a complete store-bought nuclear-weapons program. The price tag was said to be $100 million. At about the same time, it was revealed that the Pakistani-run network had provided information and nuclear-weapons components to Iran and North Korea, and had begun negotiations with a fourth country, perhaps Syria or Saudi Arabia. The current dictator of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, denied any personal knowledge or governmental involvement, and with his masters in Washington, D.C., looking sternly on, accused Khan of running a rogue operation, outside the law. It was theater of the diplomatic kind. But Musharraf was an unconvincing actor. In the context of Pakistan he might as well have expressed surprise that Khan had built a house on the shores of a drinking-water supply.

NEW YORK (AP) - The video of two Japanese hostages being held by the Islamic State group seems, like past IS videos, taken in an arid, desert setting. But suspicions are emerging that the message was not prepared outdoors at all.

An expert in these videos said it was more likely completed in an indoor studio with a false backdrop made to appear that it was done outdoors.

Kenji Goto, a journalist, and Haruna Yukawa, who runs a security company, are seen kneeling in orange jumpsuits with a masked man holding a knife between them. The hostage-holders are threatening to kill the men if the Japanese government does not pay a $200 million ransom.

The video, posted on militant websites Tuesday and identified as being made by the Islamic State group's al-Furqan media arm, appears to be filmed in the same location as those showing American hostages James Foley, Steven Sotloff and Peter Kassig, and British captives David Haines and Alan Henning.

Veryan Khan, editorial director for the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, said that the light source on the men in the latest videos appears to be coming from two different directions - as opposed to one bright sun. If the video was made outdoors in natural light, the shadows behind them should be going in one direction. Instead, they converge.

"The hostages are visibly bothered by" the bright light, she said.

One of the hostage's jumpsuits flutters in a breeze, yet Khan said she believes it's from a fan. Wind in the desert would be noisy and affect the sound quality of the statements being made by the knife-wielding man, she said. It would also kick up dust, and none seems apparent, she said.

If it was actually done inside, it could indicate the hostage-holders are less free to move about than the Islamic state group would have its enemies believe. It could also be a way for the hostage-takers to further cover their tracks and not give experts any reliable signals to indicate where they are.

The Pakistani scientist lionized as the father of Pakistan's atomic bomb, Abdul Qadeer Khan, in 2004 said he had sold nuclear secrets to North Korea.
A U.N. nuclear watchdog said in 2008 that Khan's network smuggled nuclear weaponisation blueprints to Iran, Libya and North Korea and was active in 12 countries.
SANCTIONED COMPANIES
Of the latest companies to be sanctioned, Singapore-based Mushko Logistics and Pakistan-based Mushko Electronics "procured items for several Pakistani entities on the Entity List", the U.S. bureau said in its report.
Another company, Solutions Engineering, "has been involved in the procurement of U.S.-origin items on behalf of nuclear-related entities in Pakistan that are already listed on the Entity List".
Three of the companies - Akhtar & Munir, Proficient Engineers and Pervaiz Commercial Trading Co. (PCTC) - were on the list due to "involvement in the proliferation of unsafeguarded nuclear activities that are contrary to the national security and/or foreign policy interests of the United States".
Marine Systems was placed on the Entity list for helping other already-sanctioned bodies obtain items without a licence, while Engineering and Commercial Services (ECS) was sanctioned for "involvement in supplying a Pakistani nuclear-related entity on the Entity List".
The sanctions could deal a blow to Pakistan's application to join the NSG, a 48-nation club dedicated to curbing nuclear arms proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of materials that could foster nuclear weapons development.
Nuclear-armed Pakistan applied to join the NSG in 2016 but little progress has been made.
The United States has been concerned about Pakistan's development of new nuclear weapons systems, including small tactical nuclear weapons, and has been trying to persuade Islamabad to make a unilateral declaration of "restraint".

The whole thing with India Pakistan and nuclear weapons was brought on by A.Q. Khan. Also thought to have supplied many other nations including NK Iran with nuclear weapons. From the article:

Judge Collyer Rules In DC Court, It Is No Violation Of 4th Amendment To Murder People Secretly With Assassin Drones

The case was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR). It questioned the legality of drone strikes, which killed US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, Samir Khan and Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, Anwar's 16-year-old son. It was brought on behalf of Nasser al-Awlaki, the father of Anwar and grandfather of Abdulrahman.



Claims that their Fourth Amendment rights had been violated were alleged, however, Judge Rosemary Collyer dismissed these claims because "unmanned drones are functionally incapable of 'seizing' a person; they are designed to kill, not capture.

Judge Collyer presided over a number of habeas corpus petitions submitted on behalf of Guantanamo captives.[4]
In September 2011, Collyer authored an opinion accepting the Central Intelligence Agency's view that for the CIA to acknowledge the fact that it had an interest in the use of drones for targeted killing would pose unacceptable damage to national security.[5] On March 15, 2013, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unanimously reversed Judge Collyer's decision.[6]

<In the wake of President Trump's twitter outburst last week, alleging that Pakistan has given the U.S. "nothing but lies and deceit" accompanied by the suspension of US financial aid, Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan declared that military and intelligence cooperation with the United States are suspended, during an address at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Khan, who was speaking at a seminar titled: "Contours of Security Environment of Pakistan,' said the U.S. is now facing defeat in Afghanistan after a 16-year war, despite spending billions of dollars. With defeat imminent, he claims the U.S. is using Pakistan as a 'scapegoat,' rather than defending and securing the Pak-Afghan border.

"Pakistan does not want to put a price on its sacrifices but wants them to be recognized," Khan added that Pakistan would not allow Afghanistan's war to be fought on Pakistani soil.

Military relations between Pakistan and the United States have stretched as far back as 1947. The Afghan-Pakistan Center of Excellence is a division of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), with military operations sometimes jointly focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan. It's widely known that CIA drone bases and U.S. military logistical operations for Afghanistan are located in the country.

Kahn emphasized, "a wide field of intelligence cooperation and defense cooperation have been suspended," but added the supply lines for NATO troops in Afghanistan would remain open. There was little mention of the fate of CIA drone bases operating in the country.

Ruling family's pillars to fall soon: Awan

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Babar Awan has said that for the first time in the history of Pakistan, the ruling family is undergoing accountability.

"Consider Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif disqualified in the light of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report ... only the Supreme Court's verdict is awaited," said Awan at a press conference on Tuesday.

"The countdown has begun in Panama case," he said. "The King of Patwaris" and "culprits of Model Town carnage" were about to be caught, he said, adding that the PM had failed to respond to the 15 questions asked by the Panamagate JIT.
By the Model Tow carnage, Awan meant the June 17, 2013 killing of 14 Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers in a police crackdown outside Minhajul Quran's Secretariat in Lahore's Model Town area. The PAT and the PTI believe justice was not delivered.

Babar Awan set to join PTI today

Awan demanded that "Godfather one" and "Godfather two" should immediately tender their resignations as not much time was left for them after the JIT report. He was possibly referring to PM Nawaz and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

He claimed that the court would soon announce its verdict in the Panama case and the "ruling family's big pillars will fall in front of justice".

The noted lawyer said that the ruling family was not facing accountability due to the PTI's petition, emphasizing that the family was already involved in an international corruption scandal and it was just a matter of time before their illegal activities surfaced.

Court dismisses PTI plea to disqualify Shehbaz Sharif

He taunted Nawaz, saying that he would be the only prime minister in the world who had been employed in a foreign company on a paltry salary of a few thousand bucks, and asking a foreign company to provide him residence.

The new PTI entrant said that 'cronies' of the Sharif family had said that PM Nawaz's life was like an open book, adding that the JIT had opened only a few pages of this book and found mega corruption scandals.

On the occasion, senior PTI leader Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar also took the ruling family to task.

"Politics of confrontation of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is a threat to democracy," he said, adding that the PML-N must give all evidence in court and get a clean chit if they were innocent.

He said the JIT report and the apex court's comments depicted corruption of rulers. He opined that the rulers should step down because they had lost the legitimacy to remain in power.

"Rulers will not be allowed to hide corruption in the guise of democracy," he added.

Sarwar spoke high of PTI chief Imran Khan, saying he would solve the longstanding problems of inflation, unemployment and corruption after coming into power.

"Strength of democracy lies in vibrant and inclusive accountability," he said, adding that the people of Pakistan were losing their interest in the system due to the misdeeds of rulers.

Sarwar vowed to stand by the state institutions, especially the Supreme Court.
